Although I haven't used them (yet), my friends all rave about Amazon for acquiring all their CDs, books, DVDs and videos. From the UK there's http://www.amazon.co.uk and Stateside (you've guessed it) http://www.amazon.com It seems that the UK site only handles books via the web but I think they do flog the other stuff too. They are on 0181 636 9451. States site does the lot via the web. Couldn't see True Colours listed. That "ketzacoato" sounded familiar, though, so I did a bit of digging. Although the lyrics are reminiscent of Running In The Family ("my friends seem so lost, but I know they don't believe what I'm saying" etc.) the pre-chorus of Mark King's (that is, Roland Gould's) One Man actually refers to an Aztec god/king named Quetzalcoatl. Quetzalcoatl is an important figure in the pantheon of Mesoamerican gods. First appearing around 1200 BC in the Olmec culture (or 800 BC if you favour the Maya), he "is the god of human sustenance, penitent, self-sacrifice, re-birth and butterflies", and has a connection to the planet Venus. In the Maya culture he is known as Kukulcan, and in the Quiche Maya he is Gukumatz--the other two names used in the pre-chorus. To the Maya he appears in multiple ways, which could lead to the "one man with many faces" lyrics by Boon. Though there is no indication that he created "the world we live in" as Boon wrote, he did have a hand in the creation of humanity, and was somehow instrumental "in creating the Earth and the Heavens". Although he is a god, there is some evidence of a human side. He may have been a real person whose life story turned into myth over time. One version of the tale of his leaving tells of Quetzalcoatl building "a raft of serpents and birds" and sailing off towards the rising sun. Before leaving he promised that one day he, or one of his sons, would return to claim the kingdom once more. This explains how the Spanish (from the east) conquered the locals so easily--they thought the invading party was the returning god. Just to make matters a tad more confusing, the title Quetzalcoatl was also used to denote rulers and priests. So maybe Boon knew all this, and intentionally used it as a basis of Mark's song. Or maybe, as demonstrated in Fait Acompli, Boon just came up with "Gukumatz, Kukulcan, Quetzalcoatl" because he thought he heard that in Mark's demo. I have no claims of expertise in these matters; I just did a bit of digging. I could be totally out to lunch, but if you think the whole thing is too far-fetched, go listen to A Pharaoh's Dream. The above highly distilled from: Guardado, Katherine and Shindle, David. 1998. (great picture of our One Man Quetzalbaby at ) -------------------------- One Man lyrics (R. Gould): My friends seem so lost But I know they don't believe what I'm saying They can't see the games that they're all playing And I see the worried hearts and I see the faces so unsure But the feelings that they never felt before But they don't get it Gukumatz, Kukulcan, Quetzalcoatl Gukumatz, Kukulcan, Quetzalcoatl I'm saying One man with many faces One man with many names One man made the world we live in One man can share the blame One man with many faces One man with many names One man made the world we live in One man can share the blame I hear you crying And you've been deceived so many times And you don't know how to deal with all that pain But no one knows it more than me Cause I've been a million dizzy ways And I know it seems important But they don't get it Gukumatz, Kukulcan, Quetzalcoatl Gukumatz, Kukulcan, Quetzalcoatl I'm saying One man with many faces One man with many names One man made the world we live in One man can share the blame One man with many faces One man with many names One man made the world we live in One man can take/share the blame [repeat] ...Alex... ------------------------------ Subject: cd availability/Past & Presence From: "bert w" Date: Wed, 06 Jan 1999 07:06:57 PST Hey, not that I'm an authority on anything, but to those of you asking about how to get a hold of certain Level 42 cds that don't seem to be available, here are my ideas, most of which have worked personally for me... www.cdteleshop.com www.cduniverse.com www.audiophileimports.com (773) 271-3569 theres another number thats an 800 usa number i cant remeber but someone else gave it on here to get One Man by Mark King Also, there's a guy named LOZ Green who reads stuff on here a lot. He has TONS (He says) of copies of "Level 42: The Definitive Biography". (That's the book you want.) I can't remember his e-mail address though. Just keep posting your request for how to get the book on the digest pages and he will eventually respond to you. Also, if you just happen to see a comment on the digest from him or ABOUT him, just e-mail the address he wrote from. I got MY book from him. He's really great about getting it to you quickly. The book is incredibly informative about the whole scene. Maybe more than anything, it gives me an idea of the history Mark and Boon have that must make it so natural for them to work together still. I noticed some guys made already 2 Digest cds (or three?), and that's very cool, but there so much more out there... did Polydor intervene and so no longer Digest CDs?? I don't know if it is illegal here to offer CDs with recordings made of bootlegs, limited CDs and vinyl, but I don't see why deleted records may not be offered to others for a small price. And moreover we all might benefit by exchanging (like I did). Of course I hope to meet other people too, just for chatting and having fun :-) If all this recording thing is not allowed... ok then, bad luck :( so if anyone knows more about other homemade collectors CDs speak up, it would be fun! c u all and happy 99! I don't know what it was but it was frightful! On a happier note I saw the Human League recently. (Why is Loz not running a Human League Digest? He lives in Sheffield doesn't he? ) ABC were openers and I was upset I got there too late too see all of their set. They were terrific. Anyway, I digress. Playing with the League on guitar and strolling keyboard was Lyndon Conner (correct spelling?)who played at the Hammersmith gigs. Now there's a talented geyser! I look forward to seeing whoever is going to Hemel on 26th as its my home town. I will have just come back from New York( going on 21st) and may get meet with others. I know Lollita won't be there but maybe Winston and anyone else can get in touch. Best wishes to all, and I leave you with a hopeful lyric from Mark... Say toodle oo to the passing of a KING..... I am still looking for any new additions to my collection, and if anyone has anything to trade with, please mail me as I have plenty of items to trade with. Cheers. I used to bug her to check out Level 42 when we were young; once when she borrowed a Joan Armatrading LP from me, I quickly swapped the actual record in the sleeve with a Level 42 record, Joan never sounded so good! Anyway, she is playing in our home town later this month and I want to give her an L42 compilation. Which tracks would you suggest? The Return of the Handsome Rugged Man, At This Great Distance, 43 and TPOA will definitely be on it, Mr Pink too!
