GREEN) Date: Sun, 28 Feb 1999 11:28:58 +0000 I have heard a rumour that 'Changing The Guard' CD single could well be available in Holland. Can anyone confirm this or otherwise. I have it on good authority from someone who claims to have ordered it. She does not know whether the dealer has gottem hold of some 'pulled' copies (like TSGD remix98) or whether it is an actual release. I will keep you posted. LOZ ------------------------------ Subject: So, I made it second time round...Observations From: ERICWHE01 @ aol.com Date: Sun, 28 Feb 1999 06:32:07 EST For all those who don't know me of old, or are of a slightly nervous disposition ...scroll down. For others, please remember to take this in jest. Anyway, This is a summary of what's been happening on the digest over the past few months. A) Lets make a list .......everyone is making lists, so to jump on an already heaving and stuttering band wagon I'll produce a list of my favourite lists (personal and otherwise) Here are the top ten lists pop pickers..not 'arf : 1) My Level 42 favourite songs...Ever list 2) What's on the One Man tour set list list 3) My Level 42 favourite Album without a scratch on it list 4) My Least favourite Level 42 song... Ever list (otherwise known as the 'next track' list) 5) Most asked questions by new digesters list 6) Reasons why others should really be writing to Steely Dan digest list 7) Lets guess the quirky Bass lines list 8) Best Quote at the end of an e-mail list 9) Brahms and liszt 10) Toyah Wilcox (Sorry, that one should be filed under 'lisp') B) The Andrew Goodwin sound-a-like society. There has been a proliferation of Andrew Goodwin sounding posts lately. Yes, there are people out there printing extracts from previous contributions and putting witty comments about them ! Whilst in their own right, they are amusing, nothing will compare to the ungenetically modified musings of Mr Goodwin. After all, no-one, I repeat,no-one has got a thesaurus to match Mr Goodwins verbosity. Also, no-one has got a collection of recordings as diverse as those promoted by the great man (not even the BBC). Even his liking in football teams is diverse. I bet no-one is brave enough to challenge him to a verbal duel. Syntax at dawn. I bow to your wisdom and your bobble hat. C) The One Man Tour debate This is a very confusing topic. The One Man Tour has now played England and parts of Europe. However, much of the fanbase has been left without a Tour date. First we have the lack of Dutch tour dates, then no U.S. tour...but then I hear that Mr King will be in Brazil for a gig !!! I'm sure Eagle records have promoted the single there as well as they have done it in other countries. So, with that logic in mind, are we to see an Amazonian tour, perhaps a benefit gig to the Yanamamo people (with Sting !) .....or maybe a one nighter at the Baghdad Empire, or the Beiruit Palladium...or lets really push the boat out.........how about another Leicester gig !! And if Mark does manage to do other gigs, I hope he changes those leather trousers. He wore them four nights on the trot on the English leg of the tour...No wonder people stayed in their seats until the end of the show ! D) The 1980's band phenomenon. Again, a very popular pastime lately has to be the unadulterated promotion of other 80's bands on the digest. I think nearly every 80's band has got in there in one way or another (How about Level 42...you don't seem to hear so much about them these days do you ). I'm sure that Midge Ure, Simon Le Bon, Sade, Howard Jones and Nik Kershaw have infiltrated the digest to promote their comebacks/greatest hits albums. Or it could be K-tel advertising one of their groovy 80's album releases, you know the one, with a young Peter Powell on the front. E) The 'Tin Man' Affair I have to take my hat off to David 'Tin Man' Loundy for his relentless quest for justice. Now this is for those Brits who've seen the advert for the mis- selling of pensions on T.V. Everytime this advert comes on (especially the guy being given the wrong change after buying a pint) I think of David Loundy. I bet he was never mis-sold a pension ! F) Ian Buck Just to say that I don't know the guy, but he is one of the chaps most responsible for fighting the fight. I'd like to say that he deserves all the support we can give. G) My Own Questions Can anyone answer the following : 1) Have Phil or Boon Gould actually sung on any L42 tracks (properly on their own)? 2) Is 'To be with you again' about Boon ? Enough writing, I'm going to learn the ancient craft of using cut and paste correctly. Wolverhampton was interesting for me as I had Mike Payne behind me with his stealthily concealed video camera. Now Mikey has a large "Physical Presence" shall we say - and by about half way through the gig I was suffering from heat exhaustion!! Luckily he was able to move back a couple of inches and I slowly recovered. DonZipf kept his watchful eye on security... Anyway I am looking forward to tomorrow (1st March) when the new Nik Kershaw album "15 minutes" is released this is a great album - I saw Nik Kershaw three times last year and the new stuff is excellent - there are at least six songs which are the quality of The Riddle album. The new single "Somebody Loves You" was released about two weeks ago but did not chart despite quite a lot of radio play. Then again he released it thru Eagle Rock - and lo and behold you couldn't get the single until the Wednesday after the release date! Sound Familiar!!! I think however that the album will do better than Marks because he has had much greater Media coverage - including a FULL PAGE in the Express - mind you there is a bit of an eighties revival going on (mainly thanks to Blondie) so it is a pity Mark didn't release One Man six months later as maybe he could have latched on to this - still hindsight is a great thing. Anyway ranted for too long - Later Marcus Bone More bounce per ounce! ------------------------------ Subject: CD-Rs again From: "Stuart Johnson" Date: Sun, 28 Feb 1999 12:34:16 -0000 The only quality issue when recording to CD-R is it's source. If you are recording from a digital source such as another CD, then there's no problem. Assuming you have a computer, you are much better off getting a computer CD-R drive as they are cheaper, faster and far more flexible. For example you can capture an entire track off of a music CD onto your hard disk, edit it using a sound editor (perhaps to increase the bass!) then burn it onto a CD-R with zero loss of quality. However, if your recording source is analogue such as a vinyl record or music cassette, then the majority of PC sound cards are not up to the job. They are subject to all sorts of interference, and few soundcards have been built with true audio quality in mind. That's not to say there aren't audio quality soundcards around - there are a few. The average domestic CR-R recorder will be much better equipped and thus do a better job at recording. But that really is it's only advantage. You are better off spending your money on a soundcard with an outboard ADC IMO. On the recent tour, the lack of any kind of merchandising has proved to be the only disappointment. To this end there has been a STRICTLY LIMITED EDITION tour T-Shirt designed which has been FULLY ENDORSED BY MARK KING. It will be on sale ONLY on the day of the Isle of Wight gig, 15th March 1999. The numbers are totally limited, never to be repeated, and although this is a fan project, it has Mark's full blessing, and indeed, the selling of the shirts will be on Mark's behalf. These are his official tour shirts. They will be on sale at Joe Daflo's bar from approx. 2pm, from a number of approved sellers. Should there be any remaining, they will be sold outside the venue, again from the same people. They will be sold by people attending the gig, we want to enjoy the gig as well, which is why they will not be sold in the venue. They are priced at just £10. There has been NO provision for any sales before or after the day of the gig..sorry! If you are not going, you will need to make arrangements with someone else to get you one...please do not email me and ask, it will prove to be a logistical nightmare. To recap. Because the Billy's Gone track >sounded so good? Um, no, I bought the Bonneville, because it's, in my opinion, the best performing, most comfortable sports sedan from a US carmaker. With the 240-horsepower engine upgrade package, you actually come close to pulling a G when you floor it (no big deal for a sports car, but this is a 4-door sedan). The styling is very contemporary, not "old" looking, like other sedans. I didn't test the stereo before I bought it, because I knew I didn't have to. My stereo test occurred after I got it home. It's Midnight >Personally, I bought my Honda because The Sunbed Song sounded great :-))) >ps: to Pat: any luck on the screensaver? I emailed you about that, it's gone. Sorry. I thought that this statement just meant that it wasn't restricted to just level 42, and that it had to be your favorite song.As this is a Level 42 digest, well, you know, good chance that for some of us our fave band might be Level 42, therefore fave song might be by them aswell, so for some of us, it would indeed be impossible to say our favorite song if it wasn't allowed to be Level 42. What should have been said was Name your favorite Non Level 42 song. If this is what you wanted to know, it is still easy, Whale by Catatonia. Sorry to muckstir, Ben. P.S. I went to see John Shuttleworth at the Royal Theatre in Northampton, AWESOME performance, anyway someone in the last digest said that they thought that Thomas Dolby was the only person who could replace Mike on keys, well I think that really Mike could never be replaced, but if he had to be replaced John Shuttleworth would be ideal, his prowess with the keyboard and magnificent songwriting skills would be invaluble. Anyone else agree ?
