I probably am not looking in the right places. Perhaps there is a web site somewhere that may be able to help ? The majority of my Level 42 collection is on vinyl and it probably is about time for me to come up to date a little bit ! Any info would be very welcome. Just thought that this Joe P related stuff is getting boring - so I've wiped my hands of it. However, in response to Byrdman - I have the following comments: >Someone wondered exactly what does this Level 42 digest >have to do with the racist remarks and response that has >been published lately. Let me try to explain... Why bother - rascism has nothing to do with anything except ignorance and fear. >But the subtle point that seems to escape quite a few >subscribers is that this digest represents >a virtual community. I know how cheesy that may sound but >this IS a virtual community of benefactors........ Correct, and one has virtually read none of the last 10 digests because they have been so full of crap! I have discovered the Delete function - I suggest we use that as a safeguard against the likes of Joe P. >Shall we allow insensitive remarks to offend our citizens >or shall choas rule? Of course not! It should be a combined effort to make this digest what should be! >I have said this once before: I don't believe this digest >is the pinnacle of Love and Harmony represented on the >'Net. Chris ------------------------------ Subject: miscellaneous nonsense From: "Gaetan Duperron" Date: Tue, 05 Jan 1999 06:56:57 PST First of all, thank you Bilal for mentionning "At This Great Distance" on one of last week's digests. I hadn't listened to that song in over 3 years and I had forgotten how great a track it is. My get-a-life comment for the week: I've only recently really begun to appreciate the "Staring At The Sun" album. Not bad, no? I'm only about ten years late! All kidding aside, I've recently begun playing guitar, and I have become much appreciative of Alan's work on the album, especially on the otherwise vapid-seeming "Tracie" (a song that I admit to having always liked a lot anyway). The rhythm guitar work behind (make that WAY behind; it's just buried in the mix) the verses on the single version is pretty mind blowing. It makes one sigh and wonder what may have been had he lived. Perhaps we wouldn't be sitting around waiting for a reunion; that is if you believe that Alan's death rather than the brothers' departure is responsible for the band's ultimate demise. The recent talk about Wally brings me to mention a pretty great new album that he has produced, by Senegalese singer Wasis Diop. Those of you in the US and Canada who watch "Sessions at West 54th" (and if you don't, what's wrong with you?!) saw him on the January 2nd show after Bela Fleck (Victor Wooten!!!). David Byrne even asked him about working with Wally. Anyway, it's a nice record, much less dancy than a lot of the African stuff we've gotten used to. Ciao! (Goodwin mode on) Well, blimey, mate. It does get a wee bit cold in England in late January. I should bloody well hope you'll be wearing shirts, especially Laurel (she could be arrested and all). Blah, blah, blah (Goodwin mode off) I must say that I did like Carl and Laurel's subject heading from Austin Powers. My sister works with Mike Myers' brother, who has agreed to set me up with Mike the next time he's in Toronto. I'll be playing an evil character in the third Austin Powers movie. I haven't decided if the character will be called Joe P. or Andrew G. Is there any updated information on any of the re-releases? Any chance of a US/Canada domestic release, or should I start saving now? Byrdman, you can rant anytime. But I believe you are a Broncos fan, and they're gonna get eaten by the J-E-T-S (Jets, Jets, Jets). I wouldn't mind checking that out, if you don't mind parting with a prerelease copy. Is it pretty much a straight-ahead transcription thing, or what? Your name sounds vaguely familiar. At one point (many many years ago) I was acquainted with most drummers in Toronto, as I had the dubious pleasure of working at Steve's drum shop for a couple of years in the mid-to-late 1980s. There are a couple of people on the digest who seem to be in occasional contact with Phil; perhaps they'll chime in. >Paul Bannerman (Toronto, Canada) Toronto, eh? Needless to say( but will) I am a big fan of L42 and bigger still of ' Marking time' Mark King. Well, where to start with all this. I'm having to adjust my engrained belief that I mustn't allow myself to rabbit on to people ( chiefly muso friends ) about the wonders of L42 without facing the seemingly all too common blank reponses in reply ! THIS IS GREAT !!!! OK then! I'm a bass player. I'm writing from Nelson , New Zealand. I tutor both bass and guitar at the local school of music here in Nelson and I can tell ya, us L42 fans are an endangered species! It gets awful lonely down here !!( music aside however, its a beautiful place ) Just in case you don't know where NZ is, let me tell ya its by Australia not part of. Just wanted to make that clear !! ) Anyway, I've just recently appeared on NZ tele playing a shortened version of Dune Tune/Mr.Pink on my very own JayDee Supernatural. It was on NZ programme called ' Showcase ' . I lapped up the chance to 'spread the word ' as it were and I remember being considered somewhat of an oddity at the time . " You must be the only solo bass player in the world" a quote from the presenter. Hardly ! So I soon pointed him in the right direction ( i.e. MK and the rest of the world outside of NZ. Tsk! ) I' m really intrested in chatting with anyone who wants to talk with me about L42, particularly Mark or Phil ( what about them lyrics on Forever Now eh ! Don't Bother Me indeed ( ref. to Mark )) Ta Ta for now ! Looking forward to here from someone.
