PGD/Universal have just released "The Very Best Of" in Canada through their PolyGram Special Imports (PSI) division. It is avilable for order, and perhaps in a few enlightened record shops. For those of you in Montreal, we have it at Archambault, in Place-des-Arts. We only have one copy, so first-come, first-served. I believe that it's going for about 25$. That's a lot better than I did for myself by ordering on-line. Canada! Still home of the world's cheapest CD!!! We also have the "Early Tapes" should anybody still need it. This i my first contribution. Just my opinion here, but I think the One Man album was a refreshing change of direction for MK. Yes, L42 fans did expect a much funkier and traditional L42 sound, as I did, but I think the album demonstrates quite perfectly that MK has the ability to record something a little different. I think this record is a progression, go off and listen to Influences, whilst the funky stuff is there, take a listen to Clocks Go Forward, it is this type of track that shows the depth of talent that MK has. Be in no doubt, the funky stuff is fantastic, but it's nice to have something different. Afterall, I am sure MK finds the funky stuff quite easy to play, and enjoys playing something different. Good luck to 'im is what I say! Having taken inventory since my return, I find that fewer pins are left than I had thought. If you've been putting off getting yours, NOW is the time! As I have more or less broken even on the costs, I am further reducing the price to move 'em out: $5 USD gets you 2 pins, postage included! I will, of course, reserve a few for future special occasions, but once I'm down to the private reserve, that's it - no more will ever be available. IE and other browsers ship with the graphics compression turned on, I guess because some folks still have ancient, slow computers, and they leave it up to us to turn the damn thing off. For those who don't know what I'm talking about, if internet pictures look grainy to you, your browser's graphics compression is on. The internet is capable of delivering crystal clear pictures. You will be very impressed with the difference, if you follow these steps: 1. Go to your "preferences" control panel. 2. Turn off graphics compression. 3. Clear your "history". 4. Delete all files in your "Temporary Internet Files" cache. After that, a page will load more slowly the first time, but once it's in your cache, it will be fairly quick-loading. Believe me, the difference is stunning! Anyone needing help with this function can e-mail me - Don Z. ------------------------------ Subject: digest 47 From: "lorna @ lorns" Date: Thu, 18 Feb 1999 17:13:19 +0000 Hello all, for some reason I did not receive my digest issue number 47! I haven't actually been able to read all of the digests (shame on me), so I don't know wheter this has been discussed before, but I thought I'd raise a few questions about the 'Something about you' video': - what kind of convertible is Boon driving ?? (I know it's an English one) - MK says something with a really weird look on his face while riding in the train. Anyone understood what it was ? - at the end of the video Mark gets off the train, sees the girl who has been (supposedly) betraying him and decides to ignore her. I was wondering if anyone has comments on this (this might get very philosophical) - had anyone noticed that there's always a cat around (and never the same one !) in MK's jealous visions ??? - does the clown have any special meaning in British culture ? I finally have a question about 'Leaving me now'. I have two versions of this gem, the long, original version from World Machine (with that beautiful piano in the end) and the short, remixed one which came out as a single & is featured in the video. My question was: IS A LONG REMIXED VERSION AVAILABLE ???? I've been looking for it for ages. Thank you for your attention. There were about 20 of us lot roaming into any bars that looked good. I spotted this quiet looking place. I said just had this urge to go into that place. I mean it was like I had to go in there. After convincing all the other people we went in. And guess what was being blasted out from every speaker, yup you guessed it. The place was rammed with people many of whome had Level 42 T-shirts on. Now I wanna know who else knew about this....eh? I was so amazed to walk into a Bar in the heart of Leicester and here them playing the "You can't blame Louis" The saddest thing was that I did not have time to find out what was going on. The reason being that all the other people have this lack of music appreciation hence just wanted to get out! Someone help me out on this and let me know what was going on? Take care you guys.! Re: other things It's taken bloody ages to read the back log of mail from the digest, but I've made it.....just. I want to pass comment on a few things I've noticed. Bass Strings and set-ups - I now use 40-100s Elites (I'm lucky to get a endorsement with them, but even so they are THE best bass strings IMHO after trying EVERY other make I could get my hands on) I did start with 30s, but I find that they don't have as much punch and don't help improve technique as much as 40s. OK, 30s are great for widdly piddly bass, but that's not me, I play for songs and not for myself....I do have a low action, but for those who go for that set-up I'd advise to drop the pick-up otherwise it's too close to the strings and you loose some of the tone. HOT WATER - Sorry, but IT IS BETTER AS AN ENCORE THAN AN OPENER ! Man, save the best for last, especially the version that used the Yamaha DX7 bass sound sequence (anyone lucky to have heard the Glastonbury bootleg and seen the 1st Princes Trust gig will know what I mean !!) I always like the Chinese Way as an opener> I know for some of you guys, it's not your fave song, but this is only my opinion eh ? Sending messages to the digest - Some of you lot have gotta learn how to submit a message to this digest. Why use HTML, or your mail reply function (so that the whole of a days digest gets posted with your own message) ? It seems to me some are lazy or haven't read the info at the bottom of each digest about sending messages. Maybe I'm annoyed because of the amount of messages I've had to trudge thru, but am I the only one who feels this way ???? As I always say, if you want to learn how it works best, R.T.F.M. ! Well, I walked into the office this morning and said to the receptionist, "you know, today seems like a good day to start an international incident." At lunch today I called the British Consulate General in Chicago. I explained my story to a very pleasant sounding young woman who seemed to get the gist of my complaint but seemed to miss the "strikes a blow to a principle foundational element of Internet governance necessary for the proper advancement of global electronic commerce" aspect of my argument. She said she would look into who to refer me to and would call me back this aftrenoon. When I left the office at 7:15 I was still waiting for her call, unfortunately. *sigh* If you do get the same treatment as a result of your order, perhaps you should drop by the next County Council meeting and ask where you address your complaints about the mail order music business being run, in part, through the County's computer system. After all, if your tax dollars (tax pounds?) are, in fact, subsidizing this business, your elected representatives/sales clerks should at least be able willing to tell you what to do with your complaint... In the mean time, I had an English barrister recommend that I take my complaint to the local Trading Standards office. Anyone want to call and get me an e-mail address? Who does the `talking/bridge' on the song Kouyate? Also here's an Isle of Wight question - Is there any connection with Barton Manor (vineyard) on the Isle of Wight & Mark King. My parents say when they visited Barton Manor (near East Cowes) they saw some gold record discs in frames on a wall - just wondering if Barton Manor was MKs previous home????? Now this isn't a question - a few days ago a UK fella posted about if anyone would like to meet up prior to watching a football match. I think this is an excellent idea - sorry I don't live near to you mate - but I hope that you manage to meet up with fellow Levelheads - have a great time. Hope someone out there can answer my questions. Fiona `K'
