From: brianm @ actuaries.org.uk Date: Thu, 4 Feb 1999 11:38:25 +0000 After being away from the office for a few days, I can now make a few comments on the tour. I only managed to get to the gigs at Hemel & Shepards Bush, and now DEEPLY regret not being able to "do the lot". Seeing Mark perform the new stuff in a live situation has increased my good opinion of his new work. The set list was a good mix of old and new and I feel that he got the balance just about right. Am I the only one that thinks that "Hot Water" is just too good a live song to be put at the beginning of the show ? I though the sound of the Fender bass was slightly dissapointing, but the red Fender [was it a Fender ?] that he used at the Shepards Bush gig had much more punch and depth. Mark is truly a top bloke and it was really greet to see him enjoying himself. I certainly can not wait until March/April when he says he will be back. If he is going to tour again so soon, where is the best place to hear about the dates and venues. Is the Mark King web site the most reliable and the quickest ? Now funny was that her bookstore in the movie closed after 42 years... Also saw this week in some movie-magazine on TV an excerpt of movie with a old '30-'40 filmposter behind the actors which had in its title something about "42nd street"... (so there must be an old movie with this name) Other things: SA42 - name of techno producers back from '91. Why is it always 42???? Why not 32, 41, 43 or 52? What a couple of geeks we are - in Ennis and we go find an Internet cafe! : ) I know I speak for us both when I say that this was the time of our lives. You are all very missed. Turning the keyboard over to Dan..... Dan here... I also have to thank you all for one of the most amazing weeks of my life. So many of you put in so much effort to make sure that everything went very smoothly and that all us yanks would feel at home and I just want to thank you all for your efforts. It was so difficult for us to see you all leave on Monday and Tuesday. Even though our vacation was going on for another week, it suddenly became so lonely without the rest of you. That last night at the Fox was a blast. Y'all really know how to throw a party!!! Thanks so much for The Funky Bus, The Funky Trains, all the accommodations and of course for ensuring that we all had tickets for the shows. I hope all the Americans remembered to ask the pilots to honk the horns on the planes so you could all yell out, "Funky Plane." Shannon and I are now of course driving "The Funky Car." I thought last year's ILF in May couldn't be matched, but it was incredible meeting you all again and of course meeting those of you that weren't there last year. That in itself made this trip special, but the chance to see the man for the first time--I'll never forget it. I'm going to try my best to make it out this April if he comes back, but most likely, I'll just wait to see you all in New York when Mark shows his head back in America. I LOVE YOU MAN... Dan (back to Shannon) Shannon here again... Every thing he said - and more. Except Dan forgot to tell you about the "Funky Sheep" - : ) I will save that for another post! My heart is so very full right now. This adventure is one that will linger a lifetime. You are all amazing people - each and every one of you. Dan and I will drink each toast to you.....to the adventure we all had together, to great friends and to looking forward to NY. I will write personal thank yous at the weekend. Mark was in best ever form, nobody can deny that, he is the world's best, as were the shows. Our group: As Lolita said, people have to wait forever to meet such fantastic people, we are very lucky indeed. We made a difference to the band, we gave the best support in the world, you could see our effect. I'm sure we made Mark and the band feel great. I think at Leichester he felt it had all been worth it and thoroughly enjoyed himself from there on. Even the newspapers noticed us, the Leichester Mercury even referred to our 'convention'! I will write further another time, until then, let me thank you for one of the best memories of my life, you were all brilliant, thanks for the great things you did for me and the warm friendship you all showed towards me. I'll never forget! Keep in touch Bilal PS. I am coming to the USA on business in mid to late April. Should we try and fit in a levelfest around then? do we know when Mark might play in the usa or exactly when in april he might tour the uk again? ------------------------------ Subject: MK Setlists From: "Marcel Hoogervorst" Date: Thu, 4 Feb 1999 22:59:59 +0100 >Subject: MK, Re-releases, Good-whinging >From: Cliff.Barua @ ec.gc.ca >Date: Wed, 3 Feb 1999 08:51:51 -0500 > >Awright, now that the MK concerts are about over, can we get some >setlists. Greetings, Marcel ------------------------------ Subject: Mark's bassess From: DonZipf @ aol.com Date: Thu, 4 Feb 1999 17:13:05 EST Regarding the two new basses folks have been asking about: the Dreadful Abominations (aka Fenders) have been ditched in favor of two Goodfellows Basses (thus the "GB" on the paddle) which, I was told by Alex at the Bass Centre are made in East Croydon. No, they do not yet have the Sims LED's installed. Alex also told me, however, that Fender will do a limited run of 50 MK signature basses (like the blue one) which will be availabe thru the Bass Centre. Apparently, Mark's ditching them will not affect this plan, as he did use the Dreadful Abomination on the One Man album. Curiously, Mark had removed the pickguard from the blue GB for the Leicester and Shep Bush gigs, but had replaced it for Wolverhampton. Guess he was just trying out a different look. Wow, I still am speechless! What a lovely time we had!!!!!!!! Here is a (brief) rundown on the happenings of this GREAT time!!!!! WED-THUR USA/LEICESTER- I left for Birmingham, UK on Wednesday of last week, I arrived into Birmingham and took the train and a taxi to Leicester. Upon getting out of my taxi at the Spindle Hotel, I was approached by someone screaming 'MIKEY' and this person ran up to me and gave me a great big hug and handshake, meanwhile I was trying to figure out who in the hell this man was, albeit it was Chris Dickman, so after I asked him who the hell he was, everything was cool, well until later in the story. I checked in my hotel in Leicester and took a nice nap to for a couple of hours to adjust to the time diff. Later that night (Thurs) I went out for some burgers and stuff with Adam (I'll be nice), Chris, and forgive me the other's name escapes me. After dinner, I convinced Adz and Chris to party all night long (not alot of arm twisting I might add) so we went over to Chris's new house (KEWL PAD MAN) and jammed a bit with Chris on drums, Adz on bass, and myself humbly on the synth....it was cool man.....albeit I was extremely out of practice. We then drank, and drank, and drank, then we assembled packages for the people arriving for the concerts (GREAT STUFF), then Chris went to bed (soursport) and Adam and I stayed up to speak about the world of L42 and other important life-substaining issues, we also spent 1 hour trying to figure out how in the hell to eject a videotape out of Chris's VCR, as there was no eject button on the remote. So needless to say, we gave up, only to find that the eject button was on top of the telly.......talk about Mission Impossible. Anyway to make a long story short, Adz (Adam) kept me up ALL BLOODY NIGHT LONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Next Day/LEICESTER (FRIDAY)......Myself, Chris, and Adz get up really early (needless to say we got 0 sleep) we get the FUNKY BUS ready to 'roll'..........we drive from Leicester down to London Gatwick (2 Hours) we get to Lon GW Airport and we go from the South Term to the North Term, back to the South Term, we finally pick up Bill and lil bro Wilson and Jen Reddin (who look absolutely WRECKED, no offense, by the long long flight) then the FUNKY BUS proceeds to Lon Heathrow (dada-ta dada-ta, badabada da da, da da) to pick up (let's see if I can get everybody: Winston, Lolita, Eric, Carl, Laurel, Shannon Gwhatever, Eric THE DIGEST KING, DonZ, did I leave anybody out? I fear I did......we then headed back North for Liecester on, you got it, HONK HONK---THE FUNKY BUS!!!!!!!!! We arrive in Leicester about 4:00 PM on Friday afternoon (after a few stops at the loo and lunch), and the whole lot of them loaded into the Spindle Lodge Hotel (which BTW the proprietors were THE BEST IN ENGLAND, nice nice people) We drank a bit at the bar waiting for everybody to arrive at the hotel for the short walk to the venue and we also ate KFC (HAHA) and drank.....Andy Smith (the COP-PER MAN who can place you under arrest), Bilal and friends and others met up had a couple of drinkies and made the walk to DeMontfort Hall. We all arrived and had a drink or two at the venue, the invaded the hall, the opening act STARGIRL was already on-stage and made reference to all of us in our NEAT shirts (thanks Shannon) we all looked like a cricket team arriving to create all kinds of trouble. Anyway, the opening act finished and we all awaited very very excited for the main man to appear. AND OF COURSE HE DID!!!!!!!! And after the gig Mark went to the front of the stage and shook all of our hands, he even remembered my name, which shocked the hell out of me!!! Thanks Shannon for your shoulder during It's Over, and LISA HARDING (aka Mrs. Pink) that PHOTO STALKER got me just a bit, GGGGGGRRRRRR . Another highpoint of it all was meeting Lisa Harding's new fiance Marcus Bone (nice guy) and LOZ (the WORD MACHINE GOD). After the gig, we ALL waited for MK to come out and grace us, well alas he didn't due to a row between the promoter and himself (MK), that was the 'story'. We then ALL went back, some went to bed, others like me drank more at the hotel. Then a few of us decided to go get a curry....................lets just say that the waiter at the curry 'hut' almost DIED!!!!!!!!!!!! At the end of the evening I was so severely hoarsed, mainly due to trying to harmonize with Andy Smith during the gig, ANDY, I really never thanked you properly, THANKS!!!!!!! Saturday/LONDON- We all got up early (some of us a little late, hhhhmmmm) and boarded a train for London. In London, I took a taxi with Eric (DIGEST GOD) and Bilal (TICKET KING & L42 MAN-IN-WAITING) to check into a hotel. Eric, Bilal, and Myself grabbed some lunch and Eric and I drank a 'few' pints (HHHHMMMM). We then took the Underground to the Shep Bush stop and waitied in line for the hall to let us in, mind you I went to the bottle shop for some more (you guessed it) more cider!!!!!!!!! The show was again, GREAT, except the crowd made it even better. Afterwards, I met Gary Husband, I told him how I like the track If You Were Mine, after trying to remember the English language as he was very very PISSED, he said thanks and we spoke briefly about his upcoming album and work with Allan Holdsworth. Then I met Jakko, I told him how I like the inceidental music to Chef, he laughed alot, and I moved on to Boon (WOW)!!!! I missed Paul 'Crock-Loudshirt' Crockford, but I here that he was on his way to the party upstairs, to which Paul Hammond, Ian Buck, and a few others got to go (YOU LUCKY BASTARDS). By this time, I was pissed, so I took a taxi to my hotel, went to get another curry and a few more lagers, then tried to walk top my hotel, crawled up the many many stairs and went to BED!!!! That was LONDON. Sunday/London-Wiltshire - I got a call very very early from my mate IAN BUCK (THANKS IAN FOR THE ALARM CALL) I hooked up with Ian and Paul Hammond (Paul Thanks for the ride) and we walked to the record fair. After asking several people where the hell this fair was and walking all around what seemed all of London on a hangover, we arrived to find most of the digesters there spending the GBP to which they all got BAD rates as they didn't take my exchange rates seriuously. After that Ian and Paul and I got some lunch, went to Paul's house briefly and Ian and I were of west to his house in Devizes, Wilts. That evening was topped by Ian's wife TARA (THANKS for the XOX Box) making us a GREAT SHEPARDS PIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We watched a bit of the L42 night of the Proms and LaLaLaLive, IT WAS GREAT, went to bed early as to get ready for Wolvs the next night. Monday/ Wilts-Wolvs- We awoke later in th morn (THANK GOD) and strolled around Devizes (Ian and I) until his wife joined us and we drove up to Wolverhampton for the gig. After hitting every RED LIGHT in the West Midlands, we arrived to find only a handful of us digesters in line. I had an interview (which will be posted at a later date next week) with Trevor, the drummer.....Lyndon Conner, the synth guy (BTW IS BRILLIANT, don't compare him to Lindup, it is like the Gary vs Phil thing all over again) and Nathan King, the guitatist and Mark's little bro....I would have had the interview with Mark but Nathan went to find him asleep and since he had the flu didn't want to wake him, but never fear Nathan gave Mark the questions and Nathan will be mailing them to me so STAND BY ON THAT ONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I then videotaped the ENTIRE GIG at Wolvs, and the quality and sound (some of you got to see) was BRILLIANT TOO!!!! Now before people start asking for copies of this, PLEASE WAIT UNTIL IT IS DISTRIBUTED TO A FEW MORE PEOPLE AS TOO TAKE THE HUGE BURDEN OFF MY BACK JUST A BIT, THANKS to those who guarded me from the 'evil' security team that like to eat cameras for dinner!!! Again, the gig was GREAT!! After the gig we all went back to the FOX HOTEL and drank and chatted to the wee hours just before we all had to board trains, taxis, and planes to come back home. Besides the concerts and Mark, this was my most special moment with everybody. TO THE PEOPLE WHO STARRED IN THIS WEEK ADVENTURE - I LOVE YOU ALL VERY MUCH, YOU GUYS MADE THE DIFFERENCE- AND ADDED TO AN EVENT THAT I SHALL NEVER FORGET AS LONG AS I SHALL LIVE - MARK MUST BE PROUD TO HAVE SUCH A SINCERE AND HONORABLE BUNCH OF DEDICATED FANS (not to forget the fans that stayed home or couldn't go as well). Carl Mueller, THANKS FOR EVERYTHING THAT NIGHT AT THE FOX HOTEL, that will be a conversation that I will never forget!!!!!!!!!!!!! :) By this point it was Tuesday morning and I boarded a taxi for Birmingham and got on my flight to Chicago (to which I slept the entire flight) and then changed to go to Dallas, got home and went staight to BED!!! ** THE END ** Credits: (In NO particular order of importance) Ian Buck- THANKS A MILLION MATEY Carl & Laurel Mueller - My Smoking buddies Shannon G- Hang Ten girl and eat a shamrock for luck Eric Hansen- YOU ARE THE MAN, sorry I missed you on Sun morn Bilal- YOU ARE GREAT MAN, enjoyed every fuckin' minute Chris Dickman - Can we stop for a second?
