Hansen" Organization: Worldmachine Technologies Corporation Date: Tue, 14 Dec 1999 23:02:20 -0500 (EST) Hi folks, my company, Worldmachine Technologies, will be relocating our offices this coming weekend of Dec 18th. We are also moving/upgrading our Internet service, but due to a series of unexpected problems with both the ISP and telco, there is a good chance that we will NOT have fulltime Internet connectivity again until early January. While we will have limited email capability (and thus _hopefully_ all Worldmachine mailing lists will still be operable), the web-based archives will most likely NOT be available until we are fully back in order with high-speed access. Thanks for your understanding during our "growing pains!" And for the curious... Worldmachine is moving from a 1000sf space to a 3000sf space in Boston's trendy "Cyber District" (amid the Fort Point Channel area.) If you look closely at the inside cover of the 'One Man' CD sleeve, in some of teh shots, Mark is leaning against a Aston Martin DB5 car ( Nice set of wheels ). Seeing as 'D' is the 4th letter of the alphabet ( Depending on what planet your from ) and 'B' is number 2 - Switch them around and you have 42........... Scary. Enough already. ------------------------------ Subject: Macca's bass playing. From: "Hayes, Ken [qual] IEX" Date: Tue, 14 Dec 1999 17:25:47 -0000 > ...I just read about the votings >for best bass player. Now I know that as Level 42 fans we may be slightly >biased but for gods sake Paul McCartney at number 2?!? Okay, so he may >have been a Beatle but his bass playing is worse than my grandmothers. I think one thing to remember before criticising Paul McCartney is that he (IHMO) put the bass guitar 'on the map' in popular music . Before him the Bass had a very low profile in terms of public perception because it was not usually played by a lead singer and instead was found lurking in the back somewhere. He was the one who showed that the bass could be the lead instrument in a song rather than just following and enhancing the guitars. He was very creative player, for example the bassline on 'Strawberry fields forever' which is a very melodic and I'm sure it changed peoples percetion on how a bass could be used, and he also experemented with his sound, for example the deep driving bass in 'Rain'. There may thousands out there who may have a better technique and could imitate him perfectly but few could come near him creatively. O.K. then....not convinced? Take two guitarists. One a fret melting heavy metal guitarist who's fingers are a blur when he plays and can imitate anyone or any style, and then another guitarist who plays unusual and interesting chord sequences on an acoustic. Is the 1st player really better than the second? I know who I'd rather see playing. I mean, my bid for a cd has been accepted about 2 days ago but I've not got any 'you have won it' messages or 'you have been outbid' messages. Hmm... Also it is dead annoying when someone waits to outbid me 5 minutes before the auction end, which with my luck is usually about 4 in the morning?! Anyway, back to Level 42 stuff. Craig you night sounded excellent, I wish I had got to meet Mark...sniff...sniff (cue violins). Just been listening to the Guaranteed CD, I've had it for about 6 months and only listened to a couple of tracks. I think it's OK, not really my taste. Is this commonly viewed as a bit of a dud album by the rest of the digest, or am I on the wrong planet yet again! I think Staring a the Sun is much better. That would be really cool is Mark got to do one of those 'audience with' things. I'd be happy just seeing him on TV - that Celebrity Holiday Memories vid doesn't really count. About the quantifying musical skills - I agree that it is impossible to do this, which sadly means that polls will always be a popularity thing. Okay, some little things which have been nagging away at me. Firstly approximately when will the Live Trash be released as I'm dieing ot buy it, and secondly will Mark be touring next year or is it too early to say. I was too mesmerised during the RS's gig to really appreciate some of the songs you see, as I'm sure others would have been! In a way it didn't seem real..but thats enough of the 'when i went to the jazz cafe' mails, I'm sure everybodies pretty bored of them by now! Guess the Brits don't have to worry about that as much though 'cept for Adz. ;) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ E-Etiquette By LETITIA BALDRIDGE WASHINGTON -- When it comes to communication, the difference between today and 10 years ago is like the difference between the first century and the 18th century. A laptop or a gadget that sits in the palm of the hand makes our investments, orders our groceries, pays our bills and hooks us up with a merchant in Hong Kong or an Alpine guide on Mont Blanc. Forget the gentle manners that were taught before the advent of the cyberage. Gone. Finito. But even if the traditional forms of civility have evaporated, we still need to greet one another, comfort one another and entertain and learn from one another. In the next century, innovations could allow us to embrace via computer (I wonder what a computerized hug feels like? A robot's kiss?). But in the meantime, let's draw up a set of rules that make the electronic age function more efficiently, predictably, considerately and kindly. 1. Please don't send e-mails that make angry demands on me. How off-putting when you scream: "I must have an answer by 2 p.m. tomorrow. Repeat, by 2 p.m. tomorrow." You don't know what's happening in my life, and if you did, you might just change your threatening language. 2. Please don't waste my time with the latest "jokes du jour," sent to hundreds of e-mail addresses, including mine. I don't have time for the jokes, and I am not going to be impressed that you know 200 people to send them to. I start to regard the other names with suspicion. Do they have so little work to do that they can read jokes all day, or am I the only one working under inhuman pressure? 3. Please don't order me to visit your Web page. Ask me nicely, and maybe I will. Most important, don't ask me what I think of your Web page. I don't have time to write a thoughtful response, and besides, you might not want to hear what I think. 4. When I e-mail you a thoughtful note, please don't treat it as if it never existed. At some point, you should send me a short acknowledgment: "Thanks for the important info about the oil company merger. Needed to know that. Best wishes, John." It's frustrating not to know whether or not you received my communication. 4. In my e-mails, I will be careful with my grammar, spelling, sentence structure and punctuation. I realize that if I send a carelessly written missive, I am only diminishing myself in the eyes of everyone who reads it. 5. I will keep my e-mails, those of my staff and those of my children free of foul language. 6. I will not send messages with insulting comments about others. Nor will I spread rumors on line. I realize that what I write in cyberspace, intended for only one other pair of eyes, can be spread to millions of pairs of eyes in a split second. 7. I will send messages of congratulation to those who achieve, messages of consolation to those who are having bad luck and messages of encouragement to those who need jump starts in their lives. In addition, I may write a long, beautiful letter on good stationery. 8. In my e-letters, I will use a salutation and a closing, and state the purpose of the communication up front. I will also add a personal touch: "It was great seeing you at the Convention Hall yesterday" or, "I hope your husband has recovered from his flu by now." To me, the great promise of cyberspace is speed. Along with the grinding efficiency of it all, just a few thoughtful words can change the entire nature of the communication. Good manners mean a quiet touch of warmth in the cold new techno world.
