Come on - be reasonable! Hehe, I was only trying to be funny, just to see if I got any reaction at all. Of course, I like Mark & L42 better than Rick otherwise I wouldn't be here, I'd be having my own Rick Astley Digest. And now to something completely different... I'm thinking of putting some info on Lyndon on my soon-to-be-site, so if you have photos of him and some facts, please mail them to me. Your name will be mentioned! (oh, what a great honour to be on Jenny's homepage...;) ) Any help appreciated! Love/ Jen ------------------------------ Subject: Fan Club & websites From: "Lisa Devlin" Date: Sat, 4 Dec 1999 12:30:29 -0000 Hi everyone. I'm not normally one to post on issues like this, but I'm afraid I couldnt let Richard's comments in yesterday's digest pass without getting my 2 cents in, so to speak. >Speaking of official, Mark is increasingly worried about the vast amount of web >sites in his name that he has no control over.... No artistic control, and no >input. Hence the reason he is setting up his own site to have total control, >which will be the only OFFICIAL site. Okay. First of all, I can appreciate that it must be frustrating to have no say in what is published about you, be it content or design, as Mark has alledgedly said here. However - and this is a big however - Mark obviously has internet access, and has probably been to our sites, and also reads the digest. (as he knew all about Britfest when I spoke to him at the Jazz Cafe last week). If Mark is concerned about any of the content on any of the sites, all he has to do is contact us (christ, we all have our contact details plastered all over the sites after all) and the offending articles would be removed straight away. I'm sure I speak for the majority of us when I say that the last thing any of us wants to do is to offend the very people we are supposed to be supporting. As he has not done this, and on the whole, is very appreciative of our efforts and support (his words, not mine), I can't see what the issue is. At the end of the day, lets not forget that the majority of the sales of "Trash", and ticket sales for the recent shows, were probably due to all of us publicising these things on our sites, (and I'm including the "official" sites here and the digest too.), as I don't recall seeing too much publicity from other sources (ie, the music press, Mark's record company etc etc). I'm sure that Mark would have no problem with us helping his sales along for him.....Of course, the other thing to note is that the sites are not solely about Mark, and I have it on good authority that one ex band member has visited several of our sites in the past and liked them, describing them as a "nice trip along memory lane" or words to that effect. >The only thing that has spurred me on is I am a fan and have been for 17 years, >and enthusiastic as ever I decided to create a fan club because there wasn't >one, and I wanted to offer something more substantial than surfing the net. I >thought it was a good idea? Richard, surely this is only what those of us who have sites are doing? We are simply fans trying to spread the word about the music that we love. I can't see the difference here - It's okay to have a fan club, but not a fansite???? The only difference I can see is that we are not asking people to pay for the information we provide. >All I have done is show loads of enthusiasm for an artist and his music, by >setting something like this up, and yet it has been generally surrounded by >negativity and bad feeling by,Why ? The reason that this whole fan-club thing has been surrounded by negativity and bad feeling, is that basically, people are being asked to part with their hard earned cash for information that can be obtained over the net for free, and often a damn site quicker, given the rate of response that I recieved after enquiring about the fan club. I myself decided against joining the club for this very reason. I'm sure you had the best of intentions when setting up the fan club, but in my opinion it doesnt really offer us anything new that we don't already know/have. Now, if Mark and the boys were gaining some benefit from the club, then maybe my feelings would be different, I don't know. How much "input" does he actually have into the fan club? Please understand that I'm not trying to get at anyone, but at the end of the day, we are all here to support Mark (and the other ex-members), and indulge our love of the music, and by spreading the word on our sites, to do our bit to ensure that the boys all carry on being as successful as they can for as long as they can. We are doing it in the best way that we know how, and to have a dig about this is not really on! Okay, I'm done. Sorry for the long rant. I'd be interested to know how all the other people who have sites feel about this. Oh, and while we're on the subject of sites, some of my jazz cafe pics are now on line for anyone who's interested...all in the gallery at the usual address: http://www.starchild42.freeserve.co.uk Cheers Lisa D (shrinking into a corner, waiting for the backlash....;-) ------------------------------ Subject: Fuel to the fire (was Mark cooling his heels) From: Matthew Blackmon Organization: http://www.firesermon.com Date: Sat, 04 Dec 1999 09:16:13 -0600 Morning, all- I was speaking to Lyndon after Friday's show about the tour, how much I enjoyed the gigs, and how "crazy" I am (Lyndon's words; I prefer "daft") for traveling five thousand miles to see them play live. Lyndon said that Mark had expressed some real interest in taking the band to the States for about six weeks. He next mentioned that he thought we'd probably know about it before he did. (:|) So, Statesiders without the means to travel to London, there may still be hope for you! And whilst I'm writing- regarding the shows: I went to all five nights at the Jazz Café. While the week did have it's ups and downs (Tuesday was tops in my book, with Wednesday and Thursday being nights I wish I'd not queued for five hours) every night was just brilliant. Furthermore, there was not a slacker on stage: every member of the band was playing his heart out for the crowd. Those of you taking the piss out of Lyndon, let's see you do half as well as he did with two week's notice (and especially playing the solid twelve-day schedule that they did at the end). No, Lyndon is not Mike Lindup, but neither is Mike Lyndon. By the same token, Level 42 wasn't the band I went to see. Zap -KOFC- ------------------------------ Subject: retirement/fan club From: DonZipf @ aol.com Date: Sat, 4 Dec 1999 11:12:52 EST > Apparently, Mark has gone from saying he didn't want to play live > much anymore to now booking up quite a lot of work for next year On this subject, Nathan said to me that - at the beginning of the One Man tour - Mark swore that he was going to retire completely after it was done. Of course, he may have said it, but who among us believes it will happen? :o) _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ > I find it strange that it is reported that Mark is increasingly worried > about the vast amount of web space in his name. > I'm afraid I find it a little bit annoying that Lisa and others can put so > much time and effort to keep the flame burning and the only feedback > we get is this... I think that's a misinterpretation. What Jakko said to me, is that Mark is upset about the so-called "official fan club" being represented as having Mark's endorsement, which - apparently - it hasn't. He was also upset that this "official fan club" was charging money and selling illegal bootleg videos. That's what the man said. I don't think that Mark has any problem whatsoever with our non-profit fansites and web activities. He's not stupid, y'know, and surely comprehends the enormous benefit to him which such endeavors bring. And I don't really see the point in having a fan club, unless the artist is directly involved. Hell, any one of us could start a "fan club" and charge people money to join. Apparently, that is just what has happened.
