Btw, did you know that Phil Gould and Mark King apparently played on at least one of the ''M'' albums ( M - as in Pop Muzik ). I am going to see whether I can track the album down. I was reading up about it the other day on the notes for the bands compilation CD which someone I knew had. cheers Ant ------------------------------ Subject: Hi from the funky train! The weekend was a blast. Apologies to Helen, Andrew and all who attempted to meet at the Firkin Pub at 5:00 Saturday. When I arrived at 4:00, I was informed they were closing and would re-open at 7:00 pm. Do I lack knowledge of English culture or are these strange pub hours? Anyway, a group of digesters gathered just outside the theatre from then on. Getting together was just a matter of making yourself known. The dude Andrew complains about, with the LEVEL 42 tattoo on his back stood directly in front of me for most of the show. He turns out also to have been a whistle blower (one of those ear splitting metal ones). I discouraged him prior to showtime from blowing the damn thing. He kept it to a minimum. For those who could not make a show, there is still hope. Mark asked the audience if they would return to a show in April. The response was loud. So there is hope. Also, don't forget many upcoming shows in Germany, Austria and South America. It was fantastic to meet so many digesters. Probably all too worried that I would launch into a 10 minute tirade about referees who give unjust penalties in the 92nd minute of Cup ties. (That reference for my football watching countrymen only, whose hearts have no doubt been bleeding with empathy for me these last 8 days.) Thinking about it, I should have given that tirade to Mr Home Cinema behind me. And while I was at it, I could have shouted "You're a dickhead!" repeatedly at Mr Legend on my left. Might have been a more pleasurable evening all round. People seem to have got the impression that I didn't enjoy the concert, but not so. There are things that could have improved it - like uprooting it from the urban cesspit that is Shepherd's Bush to an entirely more pleasant location. And restricting the choice of material to tracks from the first three albums. Then of course, having the original band members on stage would have been a bonus. In fact, if I could just have gone again to the gig I attended at Oxford Poly in 1983 I would have had a terrific night. AG ------------------------------ Subject: Guitars From: John Osborne-Archives Date: Tue, 2 Feb 1999 15:56:26 -0000 Hello there! What a fantastic gig on Saturday night. I think it's already been said so I won't go on about the great set and individual performances, but I was just wondering... What happened to the blue LED's on Mark's guitar? Did he forget to flick the switch to switch them on? Or was the battery flat? I know this sounds really sad but I always look forward to seeing Mark's bass "glowing" as he comes on stage. Also, was the red bass a Fender Jazz deluxe too? It was hard to tell from the Level 1 area with my eyesight! Anyway, the show was great (the particular highlights for me being Kansas City Milkman, World Machine and Mr Pink). Already looking forward to the shows in April...(Does anyone have any details yet?) MK's new album should have been called 'THE MAN'. I am new to the digest and only signed up last week after trying to find a Mike Lindup CD Changes - still searching but now with some hope. I know what you are saying (where are the Pictures) well they can be found at www.jonrob.freeserve.co.uk There is not that many but it is a start. I felt really gutted when half of them did not come out yup all those with the flashing lights and smoke. Still next time (April) if we are lucky I will be prepared. How was it on the ground floor, it looked really packed out (Full House) from where I was sitting. You should have seen me First Balcony middle left section, right at the front flashing away (taking photos) not the other. It made it all worth while waiting outside for hours. Having been to two Level 42 Concerts (Running in the Family) at Wembley and (Staring at the Sun) Brighton I thought this gig was spot on, the really old songs with his Mark's new stuff it set the hall alive. All it needs now is for a GET TOGETHER CONCERT from the famous FOUR you never know there is always a chance (in my dreams). If not, Mark you must come back in april we have been starved of you music for too long. From: "sarah wignall" Date: Tue, 2 Feb 1999 20:05:09 -0000 Here's a review from Leicesters Local Paper - The Leicester Mercury. "King Is Moving Up A Level Mark King is stepping out of the 80's as lead singer with Level 42 into the new millennium with a new band. His style of playing bass guitar by slapping and plucking with accentuated sound is infectious as he fronts a talented trio of drums, guitar and keyboards. Smoke and effective lighting added to the atmosphere, as King began with recent numbers from his One Man album and ended with well-loved Level 42 songs. If ever there was perfection on stage, then Mark practically attained it with a partically polished performance. There seemed to be a convention of his fans as around 50 of them crowded in front of the stage - something not allowed in earlier years. Eventually, he had everyone on their feet, which was just as well, because he had come to the end of the set. There the audience remained, continually applauding, until he re-appeared for an encore. One special mention of support act Stargirl - watch out for the name, the group is going places. Unfortunately, the auditorium was like Paddington Station during their turn, but that did not deter them from a good performance." wiggy ------------------------------ Subject: keep 'em coming... Did a similar thing a few months ago when all and sundry were kissing MK's arse about One Man due to frustration about the lack of output and provoked a hell of a debate!!! Personally I think Changes was a much better and more coherent effort and Peter Cox (Go West) did a much better solo project in '97. Love MK's stuff as I do, I think people on the Digest really DO take it all too seriously and that they put him on too large a pedestal. He is a guy like you and I, with the same anxieties about his own performance at work, which is at the end of the day what what he does is (?). It's time for a reality check for everyone on the digest and for everyone to realise that he is a human being and therefore fallible, and to appreciate him for what he has done and for what he does now, and in his own words "I'm glad you like the stuff I did before, I hope you like what I'm doing now - this is what this particular moment in my career is about, but if you don't like it, well come along next time and see what you think". Well, Mark, "One Man" was not particularly to my taste, but I will come and see at least one gig on every future tour just to watch, hear and admire your bass work - remember, they may be "knackered old hits", but they're not MOT failures just yet..... From: BHConrad @ aol.com Date: Tue, 2 Feb 1999 19:06:33 EST the project that I've been working on the last year or so (hey, it took Mark King 15 years between solo albums, didn't it? :)) is finally done. I'm ready to start pumping out free cassettes of Level 42 influenced music. For those Not in the know, this isn't a fancy-schmancy production. It's all out of my pocket (and the musician's pockets). - A bunch of digest subscribers that happen to be musicians (or so they claim :)) submitted some _original_ songs to me, and I've put them together on a cassette (which was much more work than I imagined). A big thank-you to Jeff Grous, who did an awesome job creating the cassette cover. I will take requests and addresses at BHConrad @ AOL.Com for cassettes. But, don't expect it to be in the mail tomorrow. (I have a job y'know) It takes some time to put each package together (and $). My first priority will be to send copies to the guys that played on it, and I haven't done that yet... Bruce Conrad also, I'll be putting the cover on my web site (pdf format), to check out, and for those people that I already gave copies to (you can download the cover and print it yourself). http://members.aol.com/bhconrad/index.html p.s. to the new subscriber in Hungary - Jo naput kivanok.
