As a keyboard player myself, I watched Lyndon quite a bit, and I was suprised that there was so much stuff going on that he wasn't playing. Its just silly things like Brass lines or stabs which surely he could have played live? The click tracks must have carried right on to the encore in Mr Pink. Because as soon as the keyboard solo in this finished Gary Husband reached up and pushed his headphones off his head. I thought that Gary Husband was abosolutely fantastic by the way! Where did Jacko get that shirt????? (Pascal, William & friends, Carl & Laurel, Winman) sorry if i have missed anyone out. What a fantastic gig it was too ! - Mark was really happy and up for it and nathan was better than ever. Gary Husband was absolutely phenomenal too !....those drums sure took a pounding. Mark could't stop giggling a few times at the crowd's singing of certain backing vocal parts on a certain song.... the crowd in general were very rowdy and in great voice throughout. Mark - if you are reading this THANK YOU VERY MUCH !!! and, can you confirm/deny these y2k reunion gig rumours ?? A point to note - the gig was just about the right length of time for a CD release so.....should hopefully be either vol 2 or vol 3.... shame i missed the tuesday gig, would've been great to meet up with Mike again. great to hear he, and wally, annie etc.. were there. so many level 42 people in the same room !! Mike - if you read this, can't wait for your new album. must go now. Aaaghh! Not that Birmingham was rubbish or anything, its just most of the people there were not there for the music (or so I reckoned). And mr.level 42 fan ambassodor himself was there - the drunk weirdo in the Level 42 t shirt. And Mike, Wally, Annie and co weren't there! Did any one go on the 18th? I was sure there were a few digest members. Its glad to see Wally Badarou still around. Does anyone know what he's doing now? I remember someone saying Mark did some rubbish songs from Trash. I agree that he did about two or three bad songs - he shouldn't have started with a song from Trash. But I liked Outstanding and Just like That. And I've ordered it, so I can't really talk can I?! Okay, better go now Thanks for your time Dale K ------------------------------ Subject: Monday's gig! From: Clare Reeves Date: Wed, 24 Nov 1999 16:47:59 -0000 I know Monday was ages ago but I haven't been able to get onto my email since then. Just wanted to say that I had a fab time, such an incredible party atmosphere!! The best thing was meeting all the Digesters who used to be just names on the screen but they are REAL people - honest! So, a few quick "hi" s to my pal Lisa Hack, Andy Smith, Lolita, Mrs Pink, Marcus, Lisa Devlin, Julie and Monique, Winston and Liz, Matt and how could I forget Mikey. Brilliant to see you all, so looking forward to Friday night. If any of you are meeting up early in the day on Friday let Lisa and I know on my mobile 07808 586269. As Mrs P. says that moment in that particular track when Mark had to stop for laughing at us was really special. Let's do it all again on Friday and perhaps we'll get the encore. Oh, I had a kiss from Nathan - I'm collecting the set! xxxxx Clare Reeves Studio Manager, Africa and Middle East Region World Service, BBC Resources ------------------------------ Subject: Disillusioned by JC From: "paul waller" Date: Wed, 24 Nov 1999 19:00:07 GMT After almost a 7 hour journey down to London to see Mark King at the Jazz Cafe on Tuesday night I have to say I was pretty disappointed by the set list as I was in January. I'm a big fan of Level 42, have been since 13 years of age, and even at 27 i'm still very passionate. I feel we've got to a point where Mark's fanbase comprises a group of die-hard fans who have followed the band through thick and thin. I looked at the venues he'd chosen, Ronnies and the JC - venues who bring you acts like Incognito, Gil Scott Heron, Roy Ayers, JTQ and countless other jazz funk / acid jazz bands. With this in mind I anticipated hearing tracks that would suit the venue like 88, forty two, sandstorm, the jazzier, funkier stuff with a laid back feel and sometimes improvised. There are some absolute classics in the back catalogue that just seem to get neglected everytime. Mark's playing last night, was ever was flawless and inspiring but i personally didn't need to hear: Take my hand (just plods along and gets nowhere - why this and no bitter moon?) Love wars (my favourite track from one man but i could have lived without it) To be with you again Lessons in love sooner or later (the real trash from trash, played awkwardly and painful to listen to) Leaving me now was in the set and it just isn't the same without mike lindup. Mike was in the crowd and i wished he could have just got up and played. Again though, why leaving me now? There are plenty other ballads, why not let lying still out of the vault? This is my very point. Kansas city milkman is a classic song and when that old chestnut popped up at Hammersmith in 1990 I couldn't have been happier, especially considering they played Love meeting love too. But when it was played last night i couldn't help thinking why not something else off true colours? You get used to the way songs are played live and any chance of spontanaeity goes out the window so you just stand there waiting for each stage of the song. Example: Running in the family typically runs into lessons in love into something about you and this was happening right up until the end of the january tour. It got to the point where at the end of something about you, you knew the band were going offstage - everything was timed to the second and you'd heard the songs so many times - Mark even referred to this part of the set as a "string of knackered old hits". Thankfully last night we were spared this hits medley and i think it's the first time i've heard lessons in love actally end without launching into SAY. There were no tracks from influences which was also a real shame. Someboby please agree with me on this one: In 1987 the fanbase was divided between hardcore fans and transient fans who would eventually lose interest after staring at the sun (failing that guaranteed). Today's fans are the real fans and the real crowd pleasers are tracks like Mr Pink (which thank god is still in the set) and not to be with you again. I really appreciate Mark King and I just feel he's wasting his time playing the songs i mentioned, especially in such venues. I would rather have travelled 7 hours to see the essential played on its own rather than most of the set actually played. GREEN) Date: Thu, 25 Nov 1999 09:03:45 +0000 Hello all, Superb gig at the Jazz Cafe Tuesday night, great to see all the die hards there. Mark seemed happy, great playing all round. Gary Husbands drumming was 'epileptic' that is the only word which I think describes it. I don't think I have ever seen anyone put so much effort into anything in my life. That man would break drum sticks playing 'Lying Still'. I took down a few things for Mark to sign after the gig but he nicked off, so it was a neat surprise to be able to get Mike to sign them instead. My only problem is with the set list - I think in future Mark should have a, 'wheel of hits' and only play one from Something About You, Lessons In Love etc. Then he can put a few more unusual bits and pieces in which I'm sure the fans would prefer. Anyway, got to dash LOZ ------------------------------ Subject: wembly video From: "Marcel McAnally" Date: Thu, 25 Nov 1999 22:34:43 +1300 hi , isnt Phil Gould saying " theres a fill coming up " , or something to that effect ? ------------------------------ Subject: Happy b-day From: "Charl Mocke" Date: Thu, 25 Nov 1999 11:51:13 +0200 Happy birthday Eric Hansen, Level 42 Digest List Administrator!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :-) (25 November) Cheers, Charl "I love to ride the ocean waves... ... but life will never be the same" Mr. Charl Mocke ISIS Information Systems (Pty.
