From: Winman42 @ aol.com Date: Sun, 14 Nov 1999 08:22:36 EST Hey everyone. Chad in Minnesota makes some good points about folks purchasing and and copying Level 42 material. HOWEVER, he makes a common mistake that a lot of folks make regarding the L42 catalog. Folks, NONE of the Level 42 albums are 'Out Of Print'. You can get them all via the web or mail order, and at most LARGE record store, like Tower, Virgin, HMV, etc. Granted these will be imprts, but the average prices i see in NYC is $15.99 per CD, which is a bargain for these great CD's. It might be a bit harder to get your hands on them, but it can be done. Keep in mind that most digest members dont mind picking up copies for other members, and mailing them out. Who knows what Polydor is thinking regarding the reissues. I just hope and pray that the reason is that they doint want these reissues to get swallowed up, and are trying to give them the best chance of success. Also in ref to Loz's comment. The CD's have been mastered, and the artwork finalized, but that doesnt mean they have 10,000 copies printed up and ready for the stores. I would hazard to guess that, besides my copy there are maybe 25 other sets floating around. Well, about 5 days till the trip to the UK. Looking forward to it. Gonna' be cool to hang out with all you guys and gals again. If we haven't met, pls introduce yourself at the gigs. (hello AG ) :-) Well, better grab some breakfast before watching the sports shows. Glad to see Lennox Lewis triumphed over Evander Holyfield. Just hope Evander has enough sense to retire. Tcoy, Winston p.s. I just JOKING about having the remasters already. :-) ------------------------------ Subject: Bilal naked.. This means that I have two spare tickets for this date. Please e-mail me at debbie @ davies157.freeserve.co.uk if you are interested. This also means that I will be going to the show on my own - country girl all alone in the big city (gulp!). I hope that I will be able to meet up with some of you. Will you be meeting before the show and if so, where and what time? And how will I recognise you - do digesters have any special features to set them apart from ordinary people, such 'Level 42' tattooed on their head? I would be particularly interested in hearing from anyone who will be travelling from the Cambridge or Royston area, and/or who would be willing to accompany me to Kings Cross station after the show. I haven't checked the times of the trains yet, but I guess that the last train will be around 12.30 - 12.45. TCOYs Debbie ------------------------------ Subject: Naked Launch. Is MK still playing at the NEC music show ? What time is he playing and on what days and how much ? 2. Is anyone going to 'unofficially' record any of MK's gigs at Ronnie Scott's, as with the recent One Man tour, as I don't expect an official version to be released ? Also is there going to be any merchandise, mostly T-Shirts ???? Till the sun goes down ..... I am not sure why the song did not appear on most Stateside copies of 'True Colours' except for CD, but it may be a case of execs feeling the cut wouldn't translate (i.e., sell) outside the UK. When I bought my first copy of 'True Colours' on cassette in 1990, 'My Hero' wasn't included. It's one of those idiosyncratic tracks that some people may get, some may not. I happen to enjoy it. Bid and sell for free at http://auctions.yahoo.com ------------------------------ Subject: Chad and Dirk regarding pirated material From: JohnRGab @ aol.com Date: Mon, 15 Nov 1999 01:04:45 EST First off, as far as I know, the bulk of Level 42's catalog is still available for import. Shops like Audiophile Imports have a very nice list and I have dealt with them many times and never had any problems. Though I know some people have. Anyway, except for remixes (about five to six 74min CDR's worth from singles) and live bootlegs, there is no reason to burn copies of your CDs to give to friends. So don't cry "unavailable" to me. That is a cop-out. If you are searching for rarities and remixes I suggest you check out GEMM.com, a great used record search engine. I have got a couple of things from shops there. For those who are willing to spend the time (ie real fans) there are a lot of sources for the music. Maybe used, but it is better than pirated. Also try Vinyl Venders out of Los Angeles. I am sure my opinion of the slew of black-market bootleg live tapes isn't popular. My question to all those who have them is: Have you sent on any money to any of the performers for their work? The tapes are illegal. There is a very good reason for that. The performance is intellectual work owned by the performer. Only if they or their agents (ie Level 42 or the mud-suckers at Polydor) put the recordings up for sale are they legally available to anyone. I know lots of secret handshakes and ass-nosing gets these recordings out in the first place, but it doesn't change the fundamental premise. And Dirk, I quite agree with you as to the character of whoever is "selectively" selling the particular bootleg you are talking of. Making a profit off the band is really crass. But it seems to me the point of being a fan is too not only spread the word about how great their music is, but to try to protect our heroes as well. Anyway, if I have a chance to talk to Mark the Jazz Cafe gig, I am giving him a 20pound to make up for the few boots I have. (The hypocritical truth arises, I do have some, and feel a bit of guilt for it.) I used to think that I had spent so much money and time on Level 42 that I had earned to right to steal a little from them. Funny how things change. I may not have hurt them directly, but ........ Anyway, I know if Tower Records had all these recordings on the shelf to buy, 99% of the copying would stop. And I am just as interested in listening to everything available as anyone. But I don't think it is right. And never will. John
