LOZ ------------------------------ Subject: nothing on the digest From: "David Jacobs (Server 1)" Date: Thu, 4 Nov 1999 12:15:38 -0000 It would appear that the Digest has been a bit thin on content recently! - Is there really so little going on?! Well to make small talk, my band has just got a web site together - http://www.theafflicted.com - it is slightly related to my JayDee bass page http://come.to/jaydee-guitars ! Incidentally, did anyone go to see 3 Blind Mice at the Kashmir? I've not seen anything about the gig on the Digest, and their own web site doesn't seem to have a review - so if anyone attended or has info, I'm sure many of us would like to know?! Excuse my bluntness, but I think the problem with the digest is that it has been fragmented into splinter groups (ILF list etc.). It seems that a lot of the old timers (like myself) just read it, and don't contribute because of the snide comments, and the endless amount of non-level 42 related debates. Therefore, the actual content has gone elsewhere - which I find very sad! I remember (in the good ole days) when the Digest was THE place for all the info - can we keep it that way please?! This brings us into the old debate of who should and who shouldn't be on here again, which is a dead end. However, a discussion group like this is by definition - what it is by who contributes - i.e. if no-one discusses real issues, then obviously everyone else is left to stand around flapping! The pointless (IMHO) debate about who should be the 'Official sites' and who shouldn't - was a fine example of why this divide has occurred - but I think it also highlights where the fragmentation has taken place - and why (I'll leave you to draw your own conclusions to that one). I'm a strong believer in the international community that this Digest and indeed our common interest promotes - but it seems that this is becoming secluded and concealed - which is a shame for new people (of which there are many)! Let us stop pointless bickering, keep our battles private(!) ensure that we maintain this Digest for what it was made to be! - This isn't some club for 'the elite' - as Loz is testament to, he shares all his knowledge freely, and look how he has been treated over the advertisement of Loz World...sorry, erm Word Machine hehehehehe!! - That kind of dedication is rare, and there are many others like him here. People should be treated with the respect they deserve. I wonder how much flak I'll get for this lot - we'll see! Is it not enough that you are the self proclaimed L42 expert of the Digest, now you claim that you are the only one that cares about it? I think not. LOZ , can you say life outside of the Digest? People have demanding jobs to go to, personal lives to fulfill, children to take care of spouses and lovers to spend time with, and family problems to attend to. How dare you imply that simply by the size of (one) digest, that no one cares about it. Let's face reality, there has not been a whole lot of "NEW" L42 news to talk about since somebody got number whatever of whatever the last 'Trash' posting was. By the size of your last posting (1 and 1/3 lines), it seems that even you are at a loss for words, a feet in and of itself. I guess that it would be a different matter if those of us west of the Atlantic could ever get a chance to see Mark in person, but for the multitude of people who subscribe to L42 Digest who are not in that Euro loop, we don't necessarily logon to express ourselves, but rather to seek information and entertainment purposes. In fact, much L42 conversation sparked by the digest doesn't necessarily happen in the digest. Don't tell me that you have never responded to a Digest posting offline or directly to the source. I have done it often. Stop inciting a hierarchy on the Digest, there's no room for that here. There is not one subscriber or one posting more important here than another. You want more postings? How about answering the ones that I wrote to (You) specifically in the past that you never responded to. Stewart A. When I saw it (and I hate to admit this) I did think it was real. It was so hyped up that they even had a "documentary" of the whole thing on network television. It was when i saw this that I realised it was fake. I have never felt so duped in my whole life!! The people in the documentary were talking about the 3 missing kids as if they were their relatives, brothers, daughters, and boyfriend. Meanwhile, they were showing the people who acted in the movie. Then I turned on CNN and there were the actors, alive and well. (Don't I sound disappointed? or bloodthirsty?) Ignore this if you are going to see it. Tell yourself it is real, and you will enjoy it (even though a third of the time you will be staring at a blank screen). Er, yes. And you, like everyone else here, can't stand the fact that the only way you can find out Oxford United results is via the internet, while I can go out in the freezing cold, pay ten quid to get in and endure 90 minutes of unmitigated tedium sat on a hard wooden bench. Well, the fime has finally come - my latest release of kick-ass Level 42 MIDI files!!!! - Release November 1999 - The files are: 1. Guaranteed 2. To Be With You Again 3. Love In A Peaveful World 4. Guaranteed (African Remix) 5. Bitter Moon 6. Children Say 7. The Chinese Way 8. Something About You The first 6 ones are part of my Jan. '99 release, while the last two are new ones. They all have been prepped up, however, for the 5 categories of MIDI devices I have identified using the responses I got from YOU people about the various MIDI devices you use! (Thanks to all that responded!) I have identified the following MIDI devices to be most commonly used: Roland GS modules (will use Category "A" of my MIDI files): E-500 JV-1080/2080 JV-1010 SC-88/88-Pro/880/8850/MGS-64 XP-80 Yamaha XG modules (will use Category "B" of my MIDI files): SW60XG sound card Creative Labs SoundBlasters (will use Category "C" of my MIDI files): AWE64 Live PCI64/128 Note: Those that load additional 2/4/8MB E-MU SoundFonts, will use Category "D". Plain OPL3 FM Synthesis sound cards (will use Category "E"). That's about most of them! If yours isn't on the list, and you're not sure which version to download, either experiment with all of them, or e-mail me for help! AND WHY DOES ONLY 14 PEOPLE HAVE ROLAND SC-88's???????? Come on!!!! This is such a cool module! Those that have it, check out the LCD display when my MIDI files are being loaded... you're in for a surprise!! Please take note: A 64-voice (at least) polyphonic module / sound card is highly recommended for my MIDI files, because they use a full orchestration of instruments at one time. They will work on 32-voice modules, but you'll hear sound dropouts when the module's polyphonic limit are exceeded. But this is NOT harmful to your module AT ALL please!!! :-) I'd like to thank everyone who helped me directly and indirectly with these files over the years... it made it all worthwhile! AND, most of all, to LEVEL 42 for providing me with such great music material to cover!!! How do you get these files? 1.) If you don't have internet access, e-mail me with details (as specific as possible please) about your sound card / MIDI module, and I'll mail you the MIDI files with a nice Word document! 2.) However, due to the expected high number of requests, I'd prefer it if you can download the MIDI files yourself from the website, it is contained in a nice page document with full info and help, as well as kick-ass pictures! And the web site's name for crying out load I can hear you say??? You guessed it! The one and only Carl Mueller's FOREVERNOW.COM!!!!! http://forevernow.com/ Follow the links on "MIDI" or from the "Latest News"! You can download either the CakeWalk .wrk file, or the standard .mid file. Unless you have CakeWalk MIDI sequencer for Windows (I used v7.0), you'll need to use the .mid file. Well, that's about it from me for now, just relieved that I've finally released the stuff. Now I can start working on The Level 42 Millennium Mix MIDI file!
