What has Mike Lindup been doing for the past few years? It seems I have got a good source of information on Mike and there will be up to date information on his progress in issue 3 or Word Machine which I will of course pass on albeit in a slightly diluted form to the digest (all the details will be there) Did Boon ever put together a follow up album to Tinman? Boon is currently working on an exciting solo project, we should have exclusive info on this in ISSUE 4 (yes, IV) of Word Machine). I would expect perhaps something from Boon within the year. When is it safe to buy a bootleg? If the music is good. Like 'The White Funky'. It is much appreciated by those (like me) that can't go because of exams. It's good news to hear about the possibility of some gigs in March. The last time I saw Level 42 was at the Royal Albert Hall. I could not believe it when Mark said that's it! Nevertheless, it's good to know that he is back in action. Keep up the encouragement for the band. -- Mr Roger JG Stevens Second year medical student, University of Aberdeen Web: http://www.abdn.ac.uk/~u20rjs/ ------------------------------ Subject: A GREAT GIG IN CROYDON... From: Kay Anthony Date: Fri, 29 Jan 1999 11:57:51 -0000 Hi to all Digesters !! I agree with Bill Miller - WOW !! - what a brilliant gig at Croydon - sorry I didn't meet you Bill, but who knows, one day maybe.... ? I can't wait for Saturday. I agree that there were a few technical problems - ( at one stage I noticed with the sampler ) - but considering the guys have to live up to the standards and expectations of Phil, Boon, Mike etc. I think they did a great job. As for Mark - what can I say - a true professional. If the rumour is true that they are coming back again to tour in UK later in the year, the guys should be even more confident and polished - let's give them the credit they deserve. I was standing there hoping that Lyndon wouldn't mess the words up and I reckon he did a good job on the whole. It was great to see people enthusiastically rush to the front at the start and being so close was great. I noticed one French guy in particular ( wearing a cool Digest T-shirt ) was jumping around like mad throughout the gig - a big HELLO to you !! I took a few pictures ( despite them saying you shouldn't ! ) and I'm keeping my fingers crossed that they have come out ok !! - Maybe I will post some onto the digest. It was great to hear some old tunes I haven't heard live before too. A big RESPECT to Mark for coming out and spending so much time with the fans talking and signing autographs - and a special hello to Raymond. A big HELLO also to Matt - The Tattoo Man - are you sure you won't be changing your mind about the tattoo !!!! Two things that bothered me though - I was very alarmed to hear that Eagle Records might drop him - what planet are they on ???!!!! ......and......wot no merchandise ? Anyway, see ya at Shepherd's Bush - let's make this one a gig to remember for Mark and the Band with all our support and cheering. And let's make sure that Mark King stays in the limelight where he belongs. Best wishes to all the fans. Hope you have a good one. Mark and the boys were brilliant as usual... I have not seen Mark play for some time now and its good to see he is still so sharp and slap happy!!!! We had a brilliant time and we met Lisa, who was fab and who already has e- mailed me some photographs....Thanks Lisa!!! I have been following Marks career since my first gig at Crawley-west sussex in september 83.....he is my Hero!!!!! He is a true professional and one of lifes gentlemen!!! I met him once in Las Vegas....The band were backing Tina Turner...tickets were like gold dust and Mark gave me two tickets......He is the "ONE MAN" All the Best Lee ------------------------------ Subject: I'm sorry... From: "steve whyte" Date: Fri, 29 Jan 1999 04:18:35 PST I seem to be getting a hard time because I moaned about no Scottish dates on Mark's tour. I sypathise with Richard Whild in Australia, as he has slightly further to travel than me, but there a few points I would like to make. First, I am film student, therefore I have no spare cash to allow me to travel to Manchester from Edinburgh. I would be scraping the barrel to buy a concert ticket, never mind a return train fare (which is bloody expensive by the way - well it is to me anyway). Secondly, it annoys me that there are tour dates all over Europe and in South America (no disrespect to anyone)but there are no dates north of the boarder. I realise that is not Mark's decision where he plays, it is the record company, but surely just one tiny gig in Edinburgh or Glasgow would not be too much to ask. In previous years I have travelled to Hammersmith Odeon and the Crystal Palace Bowl gig (what a day!), so it is not that I am unwilling to travel to a concert. I just can't afford the cost or time at the moment (exams and a dissertation deadline!) I didn't want to sound like a moaning git, I merely wanted my opinion to be noted so that maybe, just maybe, Mark will play up here next time. I'm getting over it now, honest. Steve. ps. Is Changing the Guard still being released? Does anyone have the catalogue number for the NOTP CD? My local HMV knows nothing about it. pps. Get your free @yahoo.com address at http://mail.yahoo.com ------------------------------ Subject: Cambridge & Hemel gigs From: GJWillett @ aol.com Date: Fri, 29 Jan 1999 16:36:42 EST Hi folks, Haven't had much time up till now to write up my experiences at the Cambridge and Hemel gigs at the beginning of the week so here goes: Cambridge - Big thanks to Phil, Tom, Lisa (Mrs Pink) and Bilal who I met before/during/after the gig. Support act were only OK as support bands go - stepping in at the last minute due to the original support band pulling out. Nuff about them and back to the matter at hand. I have to admit that when I saw the four guys come on stage I didn't realise one of them was Mark and neither did the crowd until he came up to the mic and then the place errupted!! The gig itself was a little disappointing crowd wise as some people have already said but what they played certainly wasn't although I too have to admit that I really missed Mike being there when they played Love Games. But I was really surprised by how good Nathan was on guitar. He was superb, given some encouragement along the way by his older brother! Somebody mentioned that Mark didn't come out of the gig until 12.30am DAMN!! I stayed around till about midnight. If only............. Hemel: Big thanks to Andy, Ad (tart!!!), Chris, Lisa (Mrs Pink again) and everybody else... What a gig, complete contrast to Cambridge, completely mad!!! All seater venue with everybody sitting there like cardboard cutouts until things got going near the end. I was in the middle of a mad posse standing right at the front of the stage right underneath Mark. Absolutely bloody awesome or what!!!!!!! The gig itself was a riot what with Nathans guitart amp going down and having to borrow the crap support bands amp and then Mark starting from the top again when everything was sorted out - 2 Hotwater's at 1 gig - how much more can you take???!!!!! Mark was certainly happier (no thanks to us lot in front of him!!) than at Cambridge. One thing I have noticed about some of the older L42 songs is that they've added some new twists in here and there especially in Hotwater and during the 'big 3'. Sounds GREAT!!!!!! Also I was really surprised about how many cameras I've seen at these gigs. I didn't take mine to Cambridge 'cos I knew that from past experiences they search you on the way in. But not this time. I just walked straight in. So I took mine along to Hemel. Got some great pics before/during and after the gig especially one of everybody outside the stage door at the end of the gig and one of Nathan (who's come outside and chatted on both occasions) getting into the tour bus. Bring them along to Shepherds Bush - see everyone there!!!!! With some of the adverse publicity regarding attendances and a certain keyboard player, I played down the event so as not to disappoint myself. I was further worried whilst I was in the Bar waiting for the show to start, as hardly anyone was under forty and there was a mass of balding heads, glasses and I have to say, rather worrying attire. It looked like a Viagra Clinic. But, I shouldn't have worried as part way through the support Act strolled Mr Hankinson striding back and forth at the front of the stage taking the spotlight off the rather average band. Then strolled in the American contingent all dressed in Blue shirts (Like an American Independence re-enactment society), and the whole of the front 2 rows started to hug each other. Rows C to ZZ then stood back in wonder as the likes of Mr Mueller,Mr Walker and Bilal took over the Front Row and became the entertainment. The Support Act was on a hiding to nothing. After the interval, and a very curious start to the Show , Mark, Lyndon, Trevor and Nathan came on to great applause. Mark then proceeded to Say 'Good Evening Lye chester', a joke aimed at the Americans, but had obviously gone over the heads of some of the English contingent, as they shouted 'Don't you mean Leicester !'. The set was a good mix of the new album (6 songs) and fans favourites and big hits. The performance had absolutely everything : - great music, dropped notes, wrong notes, audience participation, a technical breakdown and a very curious scat bit by Lyndon which can only be described as Cleo Laine on Ecstacy. All the musicians played well, there was plenty of banter with the audience (someone shouted 'nice haircut' to Mark), and although Mark played some wrong notes, and kept his eye firmly fixed on Lyndon, he was really enjoying himself. At the end people came from their seats down the aisles and danced and sang at the front. All in all, an excellent concert, and the icing on the cake was when Mark took time to shake hands with people at the front, even kissing one rather bemused lady. (I'm not jealous, honest) One further comment - Today I have seen many of the regular digest contributors (I didn't meet them unfortunately) and I recognised them straight away. But, they were not what I expected them to be like. For instance, Loz Green was alot taller than he looks in his pics on his website, Bilal was smaller and the world renowned Mrs Pink was nothing like I envisaged. So, for the sake of decency and to satisfy my imagination, any pics that contributors put on their websites, could you put a scale with it ! So, when I actually meet you, I can cut out the 'I thought you were taller/smaller...blah, blah' conversation :) Eric W. ------------------------------ Subject: dissapointed!! From: Walter.Franken @ frco.com Date: Fri, 29 Jan 1999 17:19:41 -0600 I have to say, I'm very disappointed with Mark. He always claimes the Netherlands to be his second fatherland. If so, why doesn't he do some shows in the Netherlands? It's just around the corner (read: channel), you can drive it in 4 hours. We have lot's of good places suitable for small gigs.
