I guess we had better not mention the "dodgy amp" then.......? Well done to all the "scallys" [as Mark called them] at the front.I have no idea who you are, but perhaps the "be-headed photos" that someone has refered to may be down to me as one of you asked me to take a photo, and I must admit that me and cameras are not the best of friends ! So, sorry about that ! I shall say no more apart from to echo what has been said about giving Mark and the band as much vocal support as you can. I think it does make a difference to their confidence. The Hemel experience was "by myself", but I have talked some friends into coming to Shepards Bush. Have a great time ! Brian Sorry, one more thing, is there anything that we can do about getting these March shows that have been whispered, a reality ? If Mark has really indicated that he will play anywhere, can we digesters play a part al all ? Did Boon ever put together a follow up album to Tinman? I know that Walley Badarou played a large part in early Level 42, but who the heck IS he? I'd love to know more about the man. From: Silvia Cara Date: Thu, 28 Jan 1999 19:39:37 +0100 Well.. I've been lurking around for some time reading the digest for a month and a half now and what I might say at this point is that I envy all of you who could go and see mr King giggin'... Unfortunately for me I live in Italy and only hade the chance to see L42 twice in my life! :(( I'm so sad that because of my job I cannot go and enjoy a gig or two!! So please post the more you can about it!!!! I want to remember how it was when I saw them playing and flying on the stage!! See ya all!! Silvia ------------------------------ Subject: thanks and welcome From: TSNPUB @ aol.com Date: Thu, 28 Jan 1999 13:42:10 EST Hello Gang, A quick shout out to the new members: Glad to have you aboard. You thoughts are encouraged! And thanks to all who've seen and heard the Mark King shows for their enthusiatic comments. Keep it up! I figure if I can't make it to the show, I might as well hear good things about it. Also I got my copy of One Man from Amazon.com and I like it. And sorry people but you're not gonna get me to apologize for it either. So there. Admittedly it's not World Machine or as funky as some of the songs from the first six or seven albums, but the harmonies are sweet (BM, LW) and I enjoy some of the progressions (TMH, HWS, CTG). Is it just me or is that FM-radio call-sign sounding bit followed by Rhodes piano interlude in Changing the Guard the best part of the song? Peace, Jim ------------------------------ Subject: lyndon connah, prince's trust, etc From: J Shuford Date: Thu, 28 Jan 1999 11:28:34 -0800 (PST) Levelheads: While I will not be attending any of Mark's shows, I am saddened to hear that there have been some things which detracted from the performance. I'm surprised to hear that Lyndon Connah has botched things so badly, especially because he is familiar with Level 42's work. After all, he did play with them during the Hammersmith Odeon run in 1990. In fact, I've known people (the redoubtable Joe P, to name one) who suggested that it was other band members or stand-ins who haven't "known" the parts -- namely, Jakko and Allan Holdsworth. I think what these people were suggesting is that they didn't play the parts as Boon played them and didn't appreciate how Boon's performance locked in with the rest of what was going on, and so sometimes overshadowed the song by playing a blinder. However, I realize that is not what Connah is being accused of. This reminds me of the 1987 Prince's Trust. The backing vocalists kept screwing up the words to "Running in the Family," and Mike kept shooting them dirty looks. It must be very frustrating. I figure that Connah will get things going in the right direction. Everybody can have mental lapses or an off night. How many times have we heard Mark sing the wrong words to one of his own songs or heard him admit that he played the wrong part? It happens. Just enjoy the show for all it is worth. Shuf ------------------------------ Subject: Hemel Gig From: Steve Randall Date: Thu, 28 Jan 1999 19:53:18 -0800 I must spring to Lindon Conners defence. At Hemel as with the Human League last month he was brilliant. He got the keyboard solos really accurately and reached Mikes Falsetto lines and harmonies. This was 42 as they were. The only thing that might give it away was the keybord brass instead of the Henpecked Horns. Marks brother was great on guitar. Drummer was excelent but admittedly I hardly watched him at all. Did most of you , like me, fail to notice the set list on the posters ?! I may get to Mondays concert but at the end of Hemel I was gibbering wreck, so I couldn't stand another one straight away. For those who didn't go to this one, Maybe we were really luckly, because of a technical problem, we heard the first song again. What a song. Watch out that anyone slagging off the concerts could be our windup merchant! I'm sure some of us would bite. THANK YOU MARK, FROM THE BOTTOM OF MY HEART. Absolutely Brilliant Brilliant sound, songs old and new and performance. A few of us were still around and he spoke to us for over 20 mins. My wife and I were the last to talk with Mark and Tom the guy in the wheelchair also chatted. Mark said he was really disappointed with the performance and that the band was crap on the night. We told him that he was being too hard on himself, and he said the reason noone came out except for nathan was that he'd given them all a mouthful after the show. He is looking forward to Saturday, reckons the crowd will do him justice. Anyway, must go I can't stay on the digest in the near future, just been made redundant!!!! The get together starts at 17:00 Saturday afternoon. 'If you can find the Empire, you can find the pub. Imagine you are coming out of the front door of the Empire (facing the green), simply turn right and there it is!. From: "Joy Gerardi" Date: Thu, 28 Jan 1999 14:15:14 PST First off, thanx sooo much for the descriptions of the gigs, in my 18yrs of existence I have never been to one, and I do not see being able to in the near future (tragic isnt it?) Being a USer and a full time student, drats! A special thanx to Adam Hankinson, those pictures were fabulous! As for all the buzz about the new keyboardist, sure he should be supported, But he should at least learn the lines. To me, Mike was a one of a kind and cannot be replaced. I am wondering how Mark feels about the low attendance at the gigs. Everyone says that he is in top form. That is terrific, going from record breaking days at Wembley to as low as 200-300 would get to me but kudos to him!! Play on!! Well all I can say now is to enjoy the gigs as much as you can and scream yourselves some soar throats! Mark, Nathan, Trevor and Lynden were utterly, utterly fantastic, it was wonderful to see Mark back, he seemed to be enjoying himself, a true master........and even walked along the stage at the end of the concert and shook everybody's hand.......Can't wait until Saturday......... Great to see Tony B, Tony S, Tony, Morgan, Lisa, Marcus, Adrian B, And the best way to get the room at the front of the stage is to dance like Morgan and Tony B, hell everybody was afraid of getting their toes stood on, but proud to say they carried the flag for the fans....... In awe Bill Miller www.mark-king.com ------------------------------ Subject: Croydon From: "Tony Sharpe" Date: Fri, 29 Jan 1999 01:06:01 -0000 Hi all, Just got back from the Croydon gig. First off a big respectos to all digest members that were there - Bill, Paul, Will, Lisa, Marcus, Morgan, Tony Bassette (still bopping), Ade and others. It's great that we can all recognise each other and chat, and nice to see the Digest in vocal prominence at the very front. Cool stuff. The gig - great. Enjoyed it immensely. But for the risk of opposing current digest opinion, I had a couple of minor observations:- Mark had a undeniable passion for his solo material - he was upset when things didn't go as planned during Take My Hand and said "You should hear what it should sound like". I also got the impression (maybe wrongly) that he was "going through the motions" during some of the L42 stuff. Also there were quite a few off-key moments during a couple of numbers, with Mark giving one or two of his famous "what the **** was that then?" type scowls, mainly at Lyndon. Also, having read comments about Lyndon, I was prepared to give him the benefit of the doubt. But IMHO he does drag it down a bit, no a lot actually. Nathan visually put more effort into what was required, and the drummer sounded really tight. Maybe a few more days rehearsal and a bit more verve from Lyndon would have been the tonic. To his credit I thought his attempt at the scat in Love Games was refreshingly different. I suggest he can only get better as the tour progresses. Now having seen L42 a fair few times I may be just a little over-critical in using them as a yardstick, but all said and done I got a buzz like everyone else and I think Mark felt good about the crowd's reaction at the end. Best of luck to him and the band for the rest of the tour. He came out an hour after the show to speak to a group of about twenty of us or so. As many others on the digest have reported, he is truly one of life's nice guys. His friendly approach and patience with everyone simply blew me away. He chatted to everyone as if they were old friends, and showed an interest in everything that was said. (he's probably still there now!) The only disappointment was that he only signed my arm on condition that I wouldn't get it tattooed on. I had been planning to do this but I promised him I wouldn't, and I'm not going to break a promise to him. Damn! Lots of people are apprehensive about meeting their heroes in case they turn out to be a real disappointment but Mark exceeded every expectation I had. I know this mail is only confirming what many of you know, having already spoken to Mark, but this was my first meeting and I am still floating around in awe. He is truly a star, thankyou so much Mark. Oh yeah, the gig was great too. I get the impression they had a bit of a bad night, but like true professionals, they were still rock solid. The 'One Man' tracks were terrific, and the Level stuff always brings the house down. All those going to Leicester Sheherds Bush and Wolves will not be disappointed. I hope to see you all at Shepherds Bush, if I can get a ticket. All the best, Matt / Tattoo Man PS. To the guy who thought I was Smashie (sorry Smashie!!) if you're reading, could you please email me?
