As NO-ONE offered to get tickets for me I now have to rush straight from Gatwick to get them on Sat afternoon. I hate rushing, I hate not getting tickets early and I hate the fact that he's not playing in Dublin.!! Vicki ------------------------------ Subject: Hemel gig and Shepherd's Bush From: "Balfour, Chris" Date: Wed, 27 Jan 1999 04:41:53 -0800 I was amazed last night to find my boss was going to the Hemel gig. I know him as a frustrated wanna-be drummer who quotes a lot of Beatles lyrics, so I didn't put him down as a Levelhead. Apparently he saw them in the early 80's in small university gigs!! Anyway he reported good things about the concert and spoke with much amusement about the fact there were a lot of over 40's jumping up and down at the front! About the dodgy keyboard player, he said that when I go on Saturday I should not go expecting to see Mike Lindup or someone as good. If you go expecting to see another Mike you will be disappointed! I am interested in meeting listees at Shepherd's Bush but I'm not sure of the best way. After hearing reports about some of the people that belong to mailing lists I think it might be easy to work out who some listees are! A friend who went to a Nik Kershaw concert reported the listees were all geek types who were spotty and had glasses. I wonder if our list has similar people? I also know of an Arsenal Football Club mailing list meet where all the guys met in a pub under a big "@" sign , and they all wore "@" T-shirts!! If I knew Shepherd's Bush well enough I would recommend a pub or something but I only know a posh bar called Edwards, and a mad Aussie/ Kiwi/ South African pub called Walkabout right next to the Empire which should be steered well clear of by all accounts! What do other listees suggest for meeting? Chris. ------------------------------ Subject: Re: Level42 Digest V99 #26 From: L.F.Green @ shu.ac.uk (Laurence F. Lisa my dear. I didn't want to be the first to say it. But I have to heartily agree with you. I don;t want to come down too hard on the guy though, I mean, it's not an easy task by any means replacing Mike on vocals AND keyboards. We have to get behind him really, it can't be easy for them. They're not going to be as good as Level 42 to the fans and they know that, so we should support them all we can as Marks new group. (until Level 42 reform). I'd like to offer my services. Now.... here's the plan....... get me to Britain as well as tickets to the shows, and I'll supply my time and vocal chords, and also put my hands together vigorously. I'd love to help out and welcome Mark back and keep the momentum going. I just had to write this because I am completely shocked and amazed at what i have found. First of all, I live in upstate NY where Level 42 is not the most popular act, and finding a copy of thier Level Best album has now become difficult. Well, to my complete shock, I went to Albany for the weekend and happened into this small music shop, and lo and behold in the video section, there it was......Level 42, Live At Wembly. Needless to say, it's mine now, and I'm very happy that it has Phil and Boon unlike the CD. I love the solo that Mark plays before Love Games. I'm tellin' ya, finding this tape has given me new enthusiasm about the music. If you ask me, I think this is the stuff that this generation needs, and I'm sure if we were exposed to it more that it would pick up more and more fans. We've got to get Mark King to tour the states!! Well, this is how things look across the atlantic, SEND HELP!!!! But spare a thought for the fans in Scotland. >I have moaned constantly for the last few months that there are no >Scottish dates on the tour and now that the tour has started I am >feeling somewhat left out. ...and I felt bad enough that he wasn't playing anywhere in Yorkshire! I know exactly how you feel - I had to make some special arrangements to make the Manchester gig (and if everything works out, Shepherd's Bush). I asked Mark after the Manc show, why he wasn't playing Yorkshire - he said that they'd play anywhere they were wanted, "the band will go anywhere" as he put it (so long as someone "could put them up for the night" ;-) ) Basically, the choice of venues was not up to him, but the promotions and publicity people. If we wanted a gig somewhere, he said to get it arranged. What exactly that would mean, I'm not sure... I mean, who do you speak to - you don't want to end up with him playing in a little village hall... even though Manchester was approaching that in some ways! He hinted that he might have some more dates in March - and there's plenty of time free in March before S.America - so what can we get sorted??? BTW, for those of you who were waiting after Manchester, it was my mobile that Mark was using! A mate in London rang just before I spoke to Mark, so I asked him to say Hi to him and his mate Dan! (Dan will be as Shepherd's Bush - are you on this list, Dan?) Didn't expect him to go and have a conversation with them!! (Apologies to anyone who got a photo when he was on the phone!) Of course, they thought that I was just playing a joke on them... And no-one believed them at work the next day... (who would? ;-) ) Paul (wishing he had the time and the money to make *all* the gigs...) ------------------------------ Subject: King Gigs! From: Daniel James Date: Wed, 27 Jan 1999 08:37:14 -0800 (PST) Just a HUGE thank you to all of you who have shared some of your experiences with the last few gigs. It's making this trek even more exciting! By the time you all read this, I'll be making my last preparations for the trip abroad. There is a very good chance that I'll be bringing my laptop with me, and if that's the case then I'll be able to post some of the pictures I'll be taking while I'm there. That includes the pictures Shannon and I will be taking in Ireland. Are these venues really that small??? Wow, part of me is very dissapointed by that (especially when I hear that these shows are only 2/3rds full!), but another part of me is so psyched to be seeing these shows with only a handfull of people around. I hope that Wolverhampton doesn't sell out as I've been unable to get a ticket for that show. My ticket for London should be waiting for me at the will-call, and a *huge* thanks to Bilal for the Leicester ticket! Glad to hear that Mark's still providing the aural pleasures that we've all come to love so much. Thanx Richard! Now if only Mark would come back to the States....... From the "Meeting The King" department: Speaking of meeting Mark, I also have fond memories of meeting Mark (July & August 1987), and experiencing what a fine gentleman, and all around great guy he was. My autographed "Lessons In Love" 12" single is one of my most prized Level 42 possesions. From the "In praise of Incognito" department: To anyone out there who hasn't as of yet checked out this group of highly talented UK musicians, please do so asap! Incognito will definitely satisfy your musical cravings for tasty, well seasoned jazz funk! In addition to their wonderful compositions (courtesy mostly of Bluey) and excellent musicianship (kudos to the entire band), Randy Hope-Taylor's bass lines help to add to Incognito's unique sound. My personal recommendation would be the "Positivity" cd, but you wouldn't lose by picking up any of their great releases (I should be getting "Live In Tokyo 1996" any day now.....). Well, hope everyone's doin' ok. Best wishes for a great 1999. Funky T P.S. Winston, the video's in the mail (no, I REALLY mean it this time....)
