From: Rikmg88 @ aol.com Date: Tue, 26 Jan 1999 06:36:03 EST Hello People....... Manchester what a great gig, best one I've been to !!!!.....Mark seemed Hungry again, and he seemed to really enjoy it! The songs from "One Man" sounded great especially "Take My Hand" and others but I won't spoil it for anyone..........Small crowd but it was just like the early days.......great atmosphere. The old favourites sounded wonderful too.great to hear them all again brought back loads of memories........ Me and Loz,Paul, etc, went outside the stage door, and waited, and waited.....and then the main man came out.......and he had time for everyone, signing photos, etc and a little chat,Top Bloke !!! very few stars today would show the same attention to the fans...Can't imagine Mick Jagger doing that can you ?? Loz was in heaven meeting his hero, and so was I. Mark asked me if we had met before and I said yes a couple of times but quite a while ago,and then he said "so your Richard the Third"........Ha !!! (Turd) Very funny......had a giggle, then he signed "One Man " tour poster, made a comment about Rolf Harriss,,,Loz too got some stuff signed........and he is interviewing Mark for the up and coming Word Machine 3. If any of you U.S Digesters who can't make it to the gigs, want a tour flyer mail me and I will send you one !!! Loz ring me regarding Friday and Paul....great to meet you mail me please........ See you at Leicester........Can't wait !!! Mark you made my day thanx a bunch.......... I had travelled down from Scotland not knowing what to expect and couldn't believe my luck in getting so close to the stage. Wish I had my camera with me instead of leaving it in the hotel room - DOH ! Anyway we have now booked to come down to London on Saturday. Is anyone meeting for alcohol beforehand ? Hope to put some faces to some of the digesters there. TCOY Helen ------------------------------ Subject: Gig's so far From: ElSavannah @ aol.com Date: Tue, 26 Jan 1999 07:10:01 EST Hi all I just have to add my tuppence worth about the two gigs I have been to so far at Manchester and Cambridge. I thought that Manchester was bloody superb and especially loved the fact that Mark and Nathan were pulling funny faces at me at various parts of the show!!! I don't know what others really thought of Lyndon Connor but I personally think he he is bloody useless. At Cambridge last night he completely messed up the lyrics of one of the songs (I won't say which one to keep the element of surprise for the rest of you) and earned some very stern looks off of mark. At one point in the song it got so bad that Mark was mouthing the words to him and when this didn't work he sang the part himself!! It seems to me that Lyndon knows Mark's stuff inside out but when it comes to the Level 42 stuff he hasn't really made the effort. At the end of the gig Mark was so fed up that he didn't even throw his thumb tape into the crowd as he usually does and walked straight off of the stage. Later after the gig he didn't even come out and meet the fans who had waited. He waved to me from the back door of the venue and then disppeared inside. We decided to leave him to it as he was obviously not happy and came home for a good nights rest. I would like to say something though to all of you attending any of the show in the days to come. Please, Make as much noise as you can - The crowd at Cambridge last night were quite unresponsive save for a few of the regular nutters who made quite a lot!! If you all get into the gig it will make Mark open up much more and put him at ease. One other impression I got from last night was that he is still quite nervous and it's up to us loyal supporters to show him that we are here for him and are having a good time. So come on digesters make a noise for the 'Man who is King'!!! As for attendances, I agree with Loz that there were only about 200 - 300 people at Manchester but at Cambridge it almost looked embarassing. I would say that the hall was only two thirds full and there were loads of people in the balcony who didn't make any effort at all. So if you are going, make an effort for Mark and lets make some noise - even if it is only to drown out Lyndon Connors awful singing and even worse keyboard playing. Anyone out there want to give Mike a ring quick? See you all at the rest Regards Lisa 'Mrs Pink' PS - Bilal - If you want to survive in strange towns on this tour you will have to stop asking the local ladies who walk past if they are looking for buisiness!!!!!! - It's not really much of a bird puller either so try a differrent tack mate and you might have some success!!!!!!!!!! (Mmmm will that phrase mean anything to non-Brits > ?) > > You're gonna love it ! > > That's All > -T I was there Tom, sorry I didn't make it to the Red Cow, got there a bit late and needed a massive injection of food stuff, but the time we'd found a Burger King, eaten and come out we had to get back to the exchange. It was fantastic to see Mark playing again, and in that venue you could almost see what was written on his ear piece :) I missed the Albert Hall gig which annoyed me as I was touring in Germany at the time :( so it ^was^ good to see him playing so well. The support act were, hmmm, awful, we endured 2 songs before heading back out to the bar, followed by half the audience it seemed, admittedly they weren't the support act that should've been there, they were last minute replacements. The overall sound was a little disappointing in places, methinks that the engineer couldn't mix pasta, I only hope that he isn't Mark's engineer for the tour. The only other thing that I can comment negatively about was the keyboard player. It was commented that he had problems with Mike's solos at the Manchester gig, he seemed to only play the root notes of the solos and left the solo out of them. And he totally fucked up the solo vox on a song that shall remain nameless for the people that don't want to know the set list, but it was so bad that Mark was mouthing the words to him and he still got them awfully wrong. That said Mark was fantastic and his vocals have never been stronger, Nathan is just as talented, the drummer again excellent although his snare sound could've been a bit brighter. Overall a fantastic night. Enjoy the rest of the tour Mark (if you're listening), don't pay the keyboard player, sack the engineer and most importantly PLAY ON! Nige my man! Remember that gig wasn't advertised in the press, >it was supposed to be a kind of test. I think there was 200 to 300 there. It >was unbelieveable. All those of you who wish you'd gone to one of Mike's >concerts, now you can wish you were at Manchester!! I don't know about advertising, all I can go on is what I saw on the night. Crowd numbers are very hard to gauge I'll grant you but there are usually more people than you think - and 200 people would have barely accounted for the first 4 rows - where they were packed in pretty tightly right to the side walls of the building. I made a point of working my way to the back of the hall to survey the scene, look at the crowd and take in the size of the venue. Sure there was room for more, but it looked pretty full-ish and I'd put money on there being a 1,000 there at least. >What a GREAT review of the Manchester gig, THANKS FOR NOT REVEALING THE SET >LIST, WE ARE ALL MOST GRATEFUL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Point taken and don't worry, I was acutely aware that this was the general desire of the Digest and quite rightly so. I had to mention the Love Games track because it was SO reminiscent for me of the Top of the Pops appearance - before my very eyes an almost mythical piece of footage was being made real again (blimey, I'm really losing it now!). Apart from that, I guarantee that no-one will be disappointed with the set - the tracks they chose and the way they played them exceeded all my expectations for the gig - exceptional - even Loz freely admits it was among Mark's finest hours - maybe the fact that it was the first gig of the tour gave it that little extra poignancy for him. For those who are interested in what was played I have cobbled together a page from what I can remember - it is not necessarily complete or in the correct order. It's at: www.ncl.ac.uk/~nnac/setList.html. I vaguely remembered that Mark's brother was involved somewhere now with Mark but I hadn't realised that he was the guitarist at the gig. He was good. From: "Michael T Payne" Date: Tue, 26 Jan 1999 15:40:05 -0600 Hey FRIENDS, Well, by the time your reading this I will be at the airport awaiting my flight to take off for the UK, YIPPEE!!!! I wanted to let my level-friends know that I plan to ask Mark those questions you ALL sent, I received 23, I have narrowed it down to 12, as I think that will be all the time that I am allotted. I plan on videotaping that interview, as well as, posting the entire interview, verbatim, to everybody on the digest upon my return. I also plan on videotaping as much as the concerts (Leicester, London, Wolverhampton) as I can sneak in, but don't worry I will throw myself upon Mark's mercy to allow some taping. I am also sure that many of my friends are going to record the concerts via cassette, so that will be an added bonus!!!!! Now why did he write the following you might ask: What many people don't know about me is that I served in the US Air Force for 4 years and worked for American Airlines for about 2, and I am still terrified and scared to fly! So just in case (keeping my fingers crossed tightly) this is my last posting to the digest due to the pilot wanting to take us under the Atlantic to visit the wreckage of the Titanic, I wish everybody well and want you all to know how much fun this digest has been to read everyday and how I have been blessed with several dear friendships due to this digest that hopefully will last quite a long time. For those of you who were not able to be with us in the UK, if I had it in my capacity the whole world would be able to see his concert this week, maybe I can consult with Her Majesty for a loan for all the digest members and book the Concorde...you never know? Take Care and I hope to have mountains of stuff for you when I return home. Best and Kind Regards!!!!
