I wasn't going to bother going, being a little disappointed with One Man, but on Sunday morning I made the decision to make the effort. This has to be the best decision I've made in a long time. As Loz has already hinted, the venue was tiny and only held a few hundred people, so no-one was any distance away from the stage. The performance was second to none, with Mark singing better than I've ever heard him before. As usual, he was cheerful and friendly on stage, making every individual in the audience feel as though he was playing for them personally. The set was first class, but I won't go into details, as I know that some of you want to keep the element of surprise. Suffice to say that you will not be disappointed. The band are terrific, and of the sort of standard that you would expect to accompany Mark. I now wish that I could get to see some more gigs on the tour, but I don't think it's going to be possible. Have a great time when you go to your local gig. Ken Maple ------------------------------ Subject: Re: Manchester From: RHS42 @ aol.com Date: Mon, 25 Jan 1999 06:45:23 EST Well, what a fantastic night!! - Manchester Students Union I agree with all the past comments on this subject, - it WAS the Mark of old. He really seemed to be enjoying the whole thing - and so did the crowd. There was room for more - and I feel a bit sad that in general he dosent get the following he deserves - that said, I hope the quality of the fans makes up for the quantity. I guess that it's just because in general L42 fans are getting older...30 somethings with the commitments and lifestyles that happens at that age!!! Last night really took me back to the fun of the early/mid eighties gigs - that something that seemed to be lacking in the later years I can't wait till the Sheppards Bush gig! ------------------------------ Subject: Re: Level42 Digest V99 #24 From: L.F.Green @ shu.ac.uk (Laurence F. I've never claimed this. I've never claimed to have the largest collection, the most tracks/mixes / the best relatioship with band members or anything. there are people on the digest who rate higher than me in all these catagories. And yes, it's not a competition either or anything. I never claimed not liking any other bands was a good thing, neither did I convey others should do this. It's my choise to buy only Level 42, and that is how it has to be, permanently. 2000 people????? Nige my man! Remember that gig wasn't advertised in the press, it was supposed to be a kind of test. I think there was 200 to 300 there. It was unbelieveable. All those of you who wish you'd gone to one of Mike's concerts, now you can wish you were at Manchester!! LOZ ------------------------------ Subject: Manchester Gig! From: Billy Frank Date: Mon, 25 Jan 1999 13:19:13 +0000 Hey Digitalkers! Well what can I say - the gig was unbelievable (sorry Loz I got in the dressing room and dident even have anything for MK to sign!!) Anyway - here are some comments on the show. 1. He's still got the magic in his fingers! The blue LEDs on his Fender look amazing. It made me plug in my bass before I left for work this morning - just to play through one or two MK riffs. 2. The band were great - I thought MK's brother, + the keybord player did a fantastic job - especially their backing vocals. However - there were one or two duff moments from the keybord player when he could not find the right voice in one or two songs. Did anyone else think the keybhord player was really a replicant? (as in Blade Runner) 3. One encore = 1 song not enough! I know you are always supposed to leave them wanting more - I was shattered when he did not come back on and the background music was put on. 4. Mark got the words wrong to Love Wars - but it was still one of the best moments of the night for me(its my fav. of the album). 6. Does anyone know why the tickest said the Academy when the gig was at the SU? (I think I know what the answer might be but I'm hoping I'm wrong) 7. NO MERCHANDISE - no t-shirts, sweatshirts, bassball hats, etc - what a blow. If any such items turn up at later shows - someone please let me know! Thats all for now Billy ------------------------------ Subject: Mystery Voices From: lisa.hack @ bbc.co.uk Organization: bbc Date: Mon, 25 Jan 1999 13:29:37 -0000 Hi, I always thought that the voice("communication") on "It's not the same for us" was Wally's" compare it with the BV's in "Romance" I think that's Wally as well. In "The Bends" ("look at the crazy people") I assumed it was Mark singing falsetto maybe with with Wally? Not sure about the "Ooohh" at the end of that bit though. Only a few days to Shepherd's Bush! From: "Balfour, Chris" Date: Mon, 25 Jan 1999 08:55:24 -0800 Hi there. I haven't been logged on to the list for a long time but I logged on today to see if there were any reviews of the first concert on Sunday night. There was and I'm looking forward to the concert at Shepherds Bush on Saturday even more now. I saw Level 42 7 times and the first 5 (3 at Wembley, 1 at Hammersmith and 1 at Crystal Palace) I longed to see them at smaller, more intimate venues. When I saw them twice in 2 days at the Forum on the Guaranteed tour my wish came true and it was better in all ways, especially as you could actually see the band. That's why Saturday's concert should be great. For people who haven't been, the Empire theatre is an old BBC theatre which is great for concerts. Very like the Forum in fact. I saw Bjorn Again, the ABBA tribute band there just before Christmas !!!!!!!!!!! Please excuse me for that, but it made me aware it was a great venue. See you there. Cheers Chris. ------------------------------ Subject: LYRICS & GIGS From: "Michael T Payne" Date: Mon, 25 Jan 1999 11:41:04 -0600 Firstly, In the song Swimming with Sky, someone posted the lyrics to be this: "Clous coil in the sky, is swimming through your mind......." should read: "Cloud boy in the sky, is swimming through your mind......" Along these lines, can anybody point to a > clear example of Wally's voice? Are there any, or is his voice always > layered with the other guys'? I have always wondered. Plenty of examples on the album Back To Scales Tonight, on which he sings on about 8 tracks. Which in turn demonstrate why he never sang again. LAST NIGHT WAS F ' KING FANTASTIC !!!! A good crowd was in force at the Corn Exchange including myself, Glynn, Phil (& wife), Lisa (yes, I was the one stood about 6' behind you !) and Bilal (you madman bawling off the balcony). I would guess it was approaching 1000 (again, like Nigel, I could be miles out) Not gonna say too much, but a terrific set mixing old and new. The band were good and Mark was on excellent form. Can't wait until the gig's have finished so we can all chat about it in earnest the thread will run & run. I'm buttoning my lip for now ! (Mmmm will that phrase mean anything to non-Brits ?) You're gonna love it ! That's All -T
