I think Joni Mitchell even recorded it. As have many other people. It's a tribute to Lester Young and quite the classic. My current favourite version is on Kevin Mahogany's second-to-last album, "Another Time Another Place". "...Now someone might have told you: 'Lester Young? He's out of style. But now I'm here to tell you that the Pres is happenin'..." Very cool. Um, perhaps I'm taking things for granted here, but I can't help but wonder what rock the person who hasn't heard of Mingus has been living under. The initial "who??" was tongue-in-cheek, right? >On the track "It's Not the Same For Us" off the World Machine album, >Mike Lindup sings this line in the opening verse >"Communication.....could hardly be much worse." Who's voice >"echoes" the word communication? It's definitely NOT Mike Lindup, >and it doesn't sound like Mark King. I hadn't thought about it much, but I always assumed that it was Mark singing falsetto or Wally. Along these lines, can anybody point to a clear example of Wally's voice? Are there any, or is his voice always layered with the other guys'? I have always wondered. A quick comment on the reissues, or perhaps worse, the lack thereof. The Universal/PolyGram merger might actually end up being very bad news for us. Seagram's has already closed the L.A. offices for Geffen and A&M, and a lot of people believe that this is but the tip of the iceberg. Hundreds, perhaps thousands of long-time record people are going to lose their jobs. Also, the semi-official word is that a couple of hundred (!!) bands are going to be dropped by the new giant, and it would be foolish to assume that this slimming of the roster wouldn't include the scrapping of certain projects with uncertain profitability projections (yes dears, I'm pretty sure that our beloved reissues fall under this category). Not to say that some other kind label couldn't take over, but anyway, I'm worried. Comments, rebuttals? I have their first album, which I haven't listened to for ages, but it's quite good. The song stated: "When Mark King thinks he's too old to slap, starts writing his songs 2 beats per minute, and starts modeling clothes in his solo albums then a hero from the present must perform the kouyate immediatly. One heroic individual must attack Mark King backstage at one of his shows on his tour and slit his thumb open. Mark will then chant the magic words "EE AHH OOH" and put some tape on his thumb. Mark will have a total deju vu trip, start "drinking socially" again and everything will be the way it was. Mark will start writing songs like "Theme for Margaret" and the world will be saved." Back in 1994 crazy John the Christian told me Armageddon was going to happen in 1999. I didn't beleive him until 'One Man' came out. If the prophecized acteth, we will be saveth. I remember when John Lennon was murdered. Not being a fan, it really didn't affect me. I remember riding in my parents car, someone had painted "John Lennon Lives" with spray paint on an overpass. I remember thinking, "No he doesn't." What a punk I was. I still stand by my assumption that there are many times the number of active rock-n-roll bands today than in 1960. To quote Billy Joel, its all rock-n-roll to me. LOZ. If you have a free GIG on your hard drive and a 16bit/64bitvoice sound card on your computer you should look into getting a CD recorder. Prices are cheap these days and Adaptec makes a program called EasyCD Creator which will turn your computer into a music CD recorder. Since you claim to have one of the premier L-42 collections you would be a great archiving source. Maybe I speak out of turn. Maybe you already do. By the way, don't take this wrong, but it is odd you don't own any other music. You wouldn't be selling out or anything if you sampled other artists. It isn't like going over to the dark side or anything. Rock-n-roll is well past 40 years now, and the blues goes back to the turn of the century. Traditional Celtic music also has some great artists (Andy M Stewart aka Silly Wizard) too. There are musicians out there you will like. Guaranteed. It is a small world and life here is short. Good music may be as close to an idea of Heaven as we are going to get before we die. Just think of the listening to The Essential alone in the dark with the bass and treble set right. He does some background vocals, keyboard, and producing on World Machine. I feel that album is one of their best since it was their first album that has L42 written all over it (written and produced by L42). Peace, Zanchie W. ------------------------------ Subject: Wow From: Nigel Collier Date: Mon, 25 Jan 1999 08:14:04 +0000 AMAZING The years were rolled back last night at Manchester - it was the Mark of old, some of the old mannerisms were there, during Love Games the trademark pigeon-nodding head technique was to be observed bringing memories of that Top of the Pops performance all those years ago flooding back. Mark looks great - slim, tanned and very healthy. He also looked extremely happy with what he was doing, he was clearly enjoying himself enormously. He was genuinely grateful that so many people turned out - and you got the impression he was also not a little surprised and relieved. The venue was moved from the Manchester Academy to a nearby Students Union building, maybe because they hadn't sold enough tickets up front to suggest the original venue would be anywhere near filled. The gig took place in a small hall, maybe 110 x 60 feet, I reckon there were upwards of 2,000 people there though it was difficult to tell I could be way off either way. The room looked pretty full however and the crowd were very, very enthusiastic, rowdy, appreciative, responsive and noisy. There was a great spread of ages of people there - I saw young children and 40-50 somethings. Mark responded with plenty of banter himself and kept saying things like, "it's just like the old days" or, "that one takes me back" - especially when the phantom whistle-blower was in full flow!!! Mark was at pains to share the limelight with the band who were extremely good, especially given that they're still working things out amongst themselves. The guitarist was superb, the drummer good (but maybe a little 'empty') and the keyboard player (who looked like Sting circa 1981) was great but struggled a little on some of the Mike Lindup solos. Much of Mike's singing parts were sung by the keyboard player, with the guitarist and Mark singing others or simply leaving them out. The overall effect though was just wonderful, it really was like listening to the 'old' Level 42. The set was HUGE - they mixed the old with the new in equal measure - roughly one track from One Man then an old number...and so on. The musicians must have had to learn virtually the entire Level 42 back catalogue because I reckon they must have played at least 20 songs, probably quite a few more, including the encore which the crowd absolutely bayed for at the end of the evening. Mark sported T-shirt and brown leather pants, he used two Fender Jazz basses: a blue one with blue LEDs and, I think, a black one without. The bass was slung slightly lower than the old days. When he slapped bass he tilted it slightly away from himself with the neck pointing downwards slightly, then when he played finger-style he tilted it back towards himself, neck pointing slightly upwards. He also periodically wet his finger ends with sweat from his brow when he was playing finger-style. If this is anything to go by, the rest of the tour will be unbelievable - especially the bigger gigs. Fantastic. GREEN) Organization: Sheffield Hallam University Date: Mon, 25 Jan 1999 08:59:18 -0000 Everyone, stop what your doing, listen!!!!! It was bloody brilliant. You could basically touch Mark, I have never seen anything like it in my life. I'm dead busy and can't go into it in detail or anything. But he played tons of tracks. Everyone in the crowd were shouting out weird Level 42 songs that they knew he wasn't going to play. Someone shouted Heathrow and he went into it on his own. Pure Genius. I met Nigel Collier and we were chatting about old times on the digest and new. Rich Graham was there also of course, I was supposed to be going with my mate Paul Waller but we didn't meet till about 30 minutes before they let us into the gig. I grabbed a poster off the wall. 200 flyers, and they were also giving away postcards, I only got 1! After I'd grabbed the poster I felt great, it was the only one. Then this guy came out and stuck a pile on a desk, there was about 300!!!!!!! They went like lightning. Faye grabbed me a tonne and then proceeded to give them away throughout the night to my mates who turned up late!!!! We got Mark to sign ours anyway and a few rare items, it was great. Mark remembered Faye and myself too (kind of) which really made our day. Roll on Leicester, I can't wait. Mark promised me an interview for Word Machine also so all my dreams came true. The man is a genius, a truly great man. First he let people into the dressing room about 10 at a time. TIP: After the encore, get near the exit. Rush to the stage exit door and get to the front. You might get in the dressing room. I didn't, but plenty did. Dejected Faye and myself and my mates waited outside and Mark came out on his own. Everyone crowded round and wouldnt move for about 15 minutes, we though damn, we'll never get to him, but Mark just stayed there and people drifted away, when we got to him it was excellent, he was so accomodating. He'd already been stood there about an hour. Unbelievable. Got to go.................LOZ Apparently Mikes got a deal, he's been teaching music. Changin The Guard may have been dropped altogether. LOZ
