The Family edition was available in the UK on cassette and vinyl. It was however, a Canadian import. (The US version or World Machine was also available in the UK on CD for a limited period). The Family edition cassette and Vinyl usually go for 10 pounds each. >Staying with rare items, I have been offered Japenese versions of the two >albums >on CD : Physical Presence & Guaranteed. I don't know the track listing or >what's >special, is it worth buying them anyone ?? (Loz - any ideas ???) Guaranteed has 'All She Wants' on it and A Physical Presence is the same as the UK CD. However, both are better than the UK releases as most Japanese items are. >I believe that Blue Peter are doing a feature on how to make your own sparkly >One Man CD Yes - I have already done this 'make'. Grind up horse bones and some cat gut and smear a crescent shape on the UK One Man CD. Then steal some silver jewellry and cut it up with a hammer and chisel into small pieces and sprinkle them onto the home made animal by-product based adhesive. Leave to dry, sand down the jewellry, polish, norweigein, swiss, dutch grandparents. et voila - one man sparkly CD. But I know what you're all saying - 'why that's ridiculous - all that effort when I can buy one from Ebay for 20 dollars without harming any animals. Well there IS an easier way (everyone breathes out a sigh of relief). Mark out your crescent shape on the Uk One Man CD. Drill 24 6mm diameter holes in the crescent buffer zone region -like this ------------- --- o o - ---- -- o --- ---- - o --- - - o -- - - o o -- N - --- C -- -- --- o o - --- -------------- Where C is the crescent buffer zone and N is elsewhere. 'o' represents the holes. Then simply place candles through the holes so than only the wicks are showing, and carefully light the candles, one for each day of advent. This doubles up as a delightful sparkly One Man advent crown. Whats more - it CAN be played in a normal CD player even when the candles are lit > Have fun......... LOZ ------------------------------ Subject: Demos/Unreached Levels/Re-Releases From: Fiona Klimczak Date: Thu, 26 Aug 1999 13:31:17 +0100 Dear All Over the past few weeks I've been reading on the Digest about demos that are knocking around, the Unreached Levels CDs (Winston I think you posted a few months ago a huge list of what was on these CDs, so anyone wanting to know check out the Search Engine), and then the subject of the Re-Releases (which btw there was a great article by Ian Buck in Word Machine Issue 3 (contact Loz for a copy) - and well done Ian....Ian can you e-mail me privately please, or any of Ian's friends pass on his e-mail address to me, as I have a couple of questions after reading the articles - thanks). OK so get to the point you say (!)...... I wondered whether a `team' of Levelheads couldn't `get together' and combine forces to `obtain' the demos, etc, and then think about putting them on to CDs. I don't know how difficult copying/making whatever CDs is, but if the costs could be decided Digesters could then pay for the CDs and any `profit' (ha, what profit those who make CDs may say) could be donated to a Charity. I don't know if The Children Say Charity is still going that L42 used to support... I know if I had anything rare in my collection I would be happy to offer it up for such a project.....perhaps others would be willing to do the same. Anyway just an idea...... If any of you do not know Robert Palmer past "Addicted To >Love", "Simply Irresistable" and for you Europeans-"Johnny & Mary", you are >missing out on one of the most creative vocalist of our time. To me, he is >the Frank Sinatra of the 70/80/90's I have been a fan of Robert Palmer since the "Clues" album. My favorite album of his is "Sneaking Sally Through the Alley" from 1974. That is one helluva of funky and soulful album, and it features the late great Lowell George. Robert Palmer's ties to Little Feat continue to contribute to rumors of him possibly joining Little Feat one day, but those rumors have been around ever since Lowell George died in 1979. Palmer hasn't always been a crooner. Talk about blue-eyed soul, Hall & Oates were thought to be black once upon a time. They are from Philadelphia, and many thought that they were another Gamble & Huff project when "Sara Smile" came out in 1976. They also of course recorded the original version of "Everytime You Go Away". Just listen to the unbelievable live version from the "Live At the Apollo" album. Daryl Hall totally creams Paul Young, who couldn't hold Daryl Hall's jock! I couldn't help but notice Young's omission from the blued-eyed soul list. ------------------------------ Subject: Re: Level42 Digest V99 #238 From: Jimzgig @ aol.com Date: Thu, 26 Aug 1999 10:00:25 EDT Robert wrote yesterday: << To me, Robert Palmer is the Frank Sinatra of the 70/80/90's. I guess Pyramid is working with Eagle Records with some really great, but older talent. Mark King and Robert Palmer just to name two. Actually Jon Anderson of Yes has done an album on Eagle too. It's also interesting to note that Robert Palmer's new CD is like Mark's TRASH a little bit in that Robert plays most of the instruments. From: level42dad @ excite.com Date: Thu, 26 Aug 1999 11:25:31 PDT Cruising in my Sonata last night just feeling down in the dumps thinking about problems, money, work. When out of nowhere I had a great thought. One thing I love to do when feeling a little depressed is listen to the boys, this time the track was "Learn To Say No." It then occured to me that the ultimate way to bring our boys back together was to bribe them with a internationally broadcasted concert featuring Phil, Mike, Boon and Mark, with special guest "J", "Mick Hucknall(SimplyR)" and "Rick Astley." Can you imagine a 3 day concert Labor Day weekend, heard around the world broadcasting from Greenland, Toronto and Key West. What would make this concert great is that it will be a benefit show for Greenpeace, and of course all of the industry greats would want to jump in, even Jimmy Buffett would sing "One Particular Harbour" from his beach house on the moon. I man can dream can't he. Who would you like to see at our mock concert? If there is a way you think we can pull this off let's do it! Butterfly Come Back to me. Also it's always worth buying Japanese CD's and vinyl as they seem to take a heel of lot more pride in their packaging than in the UK! I have the Japanese CD and vinyl of The Early Tapes and the cover is completely different, I also have the versions of Forever Now and Guaranteed and Physical presence and they are both well worth Having. The Japanese Guaranteed has All she wants as an extra track and Forever Now has Learn to say No, The Physical presence also has a lyrics sheet with the words to Follow me which was a damn fine find as I have not seen them anywhere else. Also...... Mr B Flint if you are there, drop me a mail - I have a spare copy of Changes on CD you can have for sale or trade, it's your deal mate! Lisa 'Mrs Pink' ------------------------------ Subject: The Definitive/Alternative One Man From: ERICWHE01 @ aol.com Date: Thu, 26 Aug 1999 18:11:14 EDT After a few weeks of 'Trash', and 'One Man' still strong in the memory, I think its time to produce a track listing of what I would have put on 'One Man' myself. I know we're only one volume into Trash, and therefore not everything is out yet !! However, - Here goes : - 1) Just Like That - Trash (4:31) 2) Don't Say I Don't - Trash (3:55) 3) Pamela - One Man (2:22) 4) Take My Hand - One Man (4:34) 5) Keep Climbing - Trash (3:59) 6) Changing the Guard - One Man (4:48) 7) Stronger - Trash (4:40) 8) One Man - One Man (5:26) 9) Bitter Moon (extended version) - One Man (4:08) 10) Swimming with the Sky (4:50) Total Time 43:13 ( a whole 41 seconds longer than the actual 'One Man' album !!) The reason for choosing these tracks is quite simple. These tracks in their own way are best in showing the change of direction of Mark King's musical outlook. They represent a step forward, either in lyrics, subject matter, or in most of the cases to a more commercial, rockier 'electric guitar/bass' sound. Some of the other tracks may have made good b-sides, in particular 'Outstanding', 'Love Wars' and the rather brilliant Bossa Nostra. Bossa Nostra might have made the Top Ten except for the use of Synth Brass....which rather spoilt it for me. (Go on Mark, make this one a b-side with the Hen Pecked Horns) That leads me onto another 'What if' subject : What if L42 had used a full String orchestration in their Live performances. Having listened to Love Games from the Notp, the addition of the String orchestration made the song so powerful, and atmospheric, which was bolstered by the Stadium sound. It made me wonder how good some of the other L42 songs may have been if played live in this way. I would have loved to have heard 'Romance', 'Starchild' or 'Its Over' live with full strings, not Synth. I know Mike would have arranged the strings as he did on FN amongst others. But, in following on with Dave Jacobs, there are certain songs or even bits of songs that send those tingles down your spine, (the groove) and to ME, hearing a live orchestra play out the final bars of 'Changes' would fit his definition of the groove. Enough for now.....just can I say thank you to Juanjo Piffaretti for making my day yesterday. Yep, Juanjo apologised for liking another group other than L42 !!! Great stuff, hehehe. Eric W ------------------------------ Subject: Heart On The Line (Trash) From: "Tim Wojton" Date: Thu, 26 Aug 1999 20:23:18 -0400 Levelheads, I was reading a message that Norlinda wrote in the last digest, and I must agree with her praise of Forever Now's "Heart on the Line." When one first gets an album, there are always two or three songs that one is imediately attracted to. When I got my FN album..."Heart on the Line" was one of them for me...and I still love it. I think it is one of those highly "under-rated" Level 42 songs. When I hear it...especially the part in the middle where mark and mike go: "Ooo Ooo Ooo, Ahh Ahh Ahh Ahh Ahh" 4X....I am lead to believe that this is one of their most "Level 42-ish" sounding songs. It kicks ass!! IMHO. Also about the Forever Now album: If it was Phil and Mark who had the big bout, then why did Phil rejoin the band in1994 and not Boon? Don't get me wrong, I'm glad Phil came back...Phil kicks ass! What I am not glad about is why didn't Boon also rejoin? Was it cause of his solo project? I think it's a shame that Boon didn't rejoin (No offense to Jakko or Danny Bloom). I, for one, think Forever Now was one of their best albums...I love it. I just think that if Boon would have been there for the ride...it would've been the perfect ending to the Level 42 career. Moving on, I've been listening to Mark's "Trash" clips on the Forever Now site...and I must say that I'm already loving it. I sent in my order for it about 9 days ago...and I can't wait to see it in my mail box, in my hands, and in my boom box. Keep on busting out the tunes Mark! And, if at all possible, let's see a Level 42 reunion :-) Wishful thinking never hurt!! One last thing. I would love to know where I can get a Level 42 POSTER. Preferably from the SITL to the RITF era. I just moved into college about week ago and I need a poster (or two) to put on the walls of the dorm room. If ANYONE can help me, I'd greatly appreciate it. The music that was popular IN the 80-s doesn't last. Like Jason Donovan or Milli Vanilli or NKOTB. I liked Rick Astley and Bros when I was "in my prime", but I just makes me sick to listen to them today! And believe me, I've tried to defend Rick Astley but he really isn't that good. And then we have music like Level 42 and Nik Kershaw which for me is REAL quality music from the 80-s. >Anyhow, I am trying to say that RETRO and DISCO are regurgitations, >not really accurate revivals.
