It's always interesting to me to hear what musicians I admire were influenced by. I can totally hear the Chaka Kahn influence. In fact, I was listening to "A Physical Presence" (which is probably one of the funkiest records I've EVER heard) and thinking how it sort of reminded me of this live Rufus/Chaka Kahn record "Stompin at the Savoy" which is also a pretty damn funky. Anyway, just for the record, Charles Mingus (for anyone that doesn't know) was a famous and innovative jazz bassist and 'Good-bye Pork Pie Hat' was one of his better known compositions. I think Joni Mitchell even recorded it. Anyway, thanks again for the list! ---Laura D. ------------------------------ Subject: Re: Level42 Digest V99 #22 From: clare.reeves @ bbc.co.uk Organization: bbc Date: Sat, 23 Jan 1999 15:33:15 -0000 Hi Micro Kids! I'm having a quiet moment at work (!) so I thought I'd make some comments... I went to the Bass Centre last week and tried one of the new Alembic Excels.. very nice but I should think it's not a patch on the Series 2. It was very comfortable to play.. and surprisingly light. What hasn't it got that it's big brothers have? I'd like to know because there was something about it that didn't quite live up to my expectations but I can't put my finger on what! Help! 80s clubs in London.. I was interested to hear someone (sorry, I've forgotton who) mention Gossips Electric Dreams on a Monday night. I went there a couple of weeks ago for a friends birthday outing and we were all rather disappointed. Hoping to hear (perhaps) some L42, maybe some Spandau, ABC, Duranies etc it was mostly heavey gothic!!! Scarey!! We think they played the lighter music just for us who looked totally out of place amongst those goths (one was dressed as a nun!!). However, if you're gay / open minded or both try Popstars at the Leisure Lounge on Friday nights.. SUPERB music and fab atmosphere!! Also, interestingly, the queue was longer for the mens toilet than for the girls! Gig and One Man.. Getting v. excited about the gig and I have been swatting up the lyrics from One Man.. 'cos gigs are much more fun when you know every sone inside out aren't they? I have to say that I'm really warming to the album - but if One Man is released as a single, and it's a good song - it seriously needs remixing. It's distorted and compressed to death. Sorry if that was all a bit dull, but I enjoyed it. PS Sidney Milkman.. sorry I've not replied yet, I will very soon!! PPS Does anyone else on the Digest own one of the very fine Ashdown watches?! xx Clare Clare Reeves Africa and Middle East Studio Manager BBC World Service, Bush House, Strand, London WC2B 4PH Internal: (08) 72482 Ext: +44 (0) 171 557 2482 ------------------------------ Subject: Back from a long holiday... From: Paul Fucito Date: Sat, 23 Jan 1999 10:48:07 -0500 Ok...It's been some time since I've posted here, and in fact I just got a new e-mail account, new home, and was married on new years day..... So, I'm out of it folks. I still have to order Mark's solo album and the recent greatest hits album as well. After leaving North Carolina a few years back to hit NJ again, I'm now just outside of Hartford Connecticut (any local Levelheads between here and Boston e-mail me)and looking for another radio job. My wife is an accountant now and that's why we moved. One last note, if you ever get the chance to go to the Carribean, you MUST hit Saint Martin. The most beautiful place I've ever been and an awsome spot for a honeymoon, and yes, they even play Level 42 on the radio down there........ Questions; Ok, with the Universal Records take over, will the L42 catalog still be reissued? If not, will the material become available to interested record labels? What's Mike Lindup up to? Any word on a new album yet? I picked up "The Chinese Way" U.S. 12" promo and "The Remix Collection" recently. I also saw "Starchild" on a Tommy Boy Records compilation. Anybody else see that at CDNow? I picked up a great CD by The Christians entitled "Colour" (used to have it on vinyl)and think Level 42 fans would enjoy this band. Most of you in the UK have heard of them, but I think few know of them in the States. Any other fans of this band on the digest? Well, I'm off........... Just thought I'd check back in. From: OgdenWSFC @ aol.com Date: Sat, 23 Jan 1999 17:32:02 EST Hello friends!!!!!!!! I just got back today from a week and a half vacation to Washington, DC, USA, to visit my dad. While on the plane (especially the 8 hour delay from Baltimore to Chicago because of O'Hare's ridiculous weather), I had plenty of time to "critically" listen to all my favorite L 42 tunes that I recorded onto a tape before I left. It's funny the things you notice when you are "really listening" and not paying attention to anything else....... So here's my question - On the track "It's Not the Same For Us" off the World Machine album, Mike Lindup sings this line in the opening verse :"Communication.....could hardly be much worse." Who's voice "echoes" the word communication? It's definitely NOT Mike Lindup, and it doesn't sound like Mark King. Does anybody have a clue??? Lemme know! It's bugging the hell out of me! Always out of date- Ogden ------------------------------ Subject: Flyers From: Nigel Collier Date: Sun, 24 Jan 1999 09:01:39 +0000 Any plans to take A5 flyers or such like to promote the Digest at the gigs?
