Lundgren" Date: Mon, 16 Aug 1999 10:52:36 GMT Does anyone out there know if Mark ever reads this digest? Because if he does, I'd really like to know definitively why L42 never once popped over to the colonies (Australia) to do a couple of shows. It's not like there wouldn't be enough fans for at least a one or two concerts; even a small venue tour? It's just been so disappointing to love a band and their music for almost 20 years and never get to see them live. From: Robin Sampson Date: Mon, 16 Aug 1999 12:12:59 +0100 Just returned from 10 days working away to find 71/400 waiting for me. Needless to say my wife wasn't too chuffed when the first thing I did was put it straight on. We definately need more music of this quality in the world, well thought out, beautifully put together and a joy to listen to. DOWN WITH PRODUCTION LINE BOY AND GIRL BANDS!!!! Ronald ------------------------------ Subject: Turn It On From: Winman42 @ aol.com Date: Mon, 16 Aug 1999 11:32:58 EDT Don't know if this has been mentioned before, but this past Saturday I saw a 'NEW' version of the 'Turn It On' compilation. It was the same track listing, but the cover artwork was totally different. It used a photo of all 4 original band members that I've never seen before. If memory serves, it uses a shot from the same photo shoot as the cover of 'Greatest Hits And More'. I didn't buy this compilation, but may go back and pick it up. Sadly, they only had one copy, so i hope it's still available. Loz, your copy of One Man is on it's way shortly, sorry for the delay. One of the cooler things about this digest is getting to meet folks from all over the world. I had dinner this Saturday with Lars-Ove Larsson and his wife Monica. They happened to be in NYC on a small vacation, and we were able to hook up for a few hours on saturday. Had nice italian meal, chatted about their visits, and L42 of course. I had previously me Lars in London during an earlier Levelfest. Tcoy, Winston ------------------------------ Subject: The Beatles/Level 42 link.. From: "Hayes, Ken [qual] IEX" Date: Mon, 16 Aug 1999 16:49:16 +0100 I was lying in bed Saturaday morning listening to 'Forever now' on the stereo reading a book on the Beatles called 'The beatles:Quote, Unquote' and it struck me that all the music I liked had a common thread or link except for level 42 which stuck out like a sore thumb,(Tee Hee Hee!!). Anyway while I was thinking this I was looking at this picture of George Harrison from recent times and I noticed that in the backround playing Bass was no other than the King himself!!! I nearly dropped the book in fright I tell you.It was like as if I had willed Mark into the picture.Mikes in there too I think because the focus is on GH and Mark is slightly out of focus but recognisable, and there's another figure thats further away that looks like Mike but it's hard to say for sure because he's too out of focus. Was this from a Prince's trust concert, the one where they were the house band? Ken. ------------------------------ Subject: A few thoughts on Trash From: Keith Watt Date: Mon, 16 Aug 1999 19:49:41 +0400 Abu Dhabi. United Arab Emirates. Monday 16th August 1999. Greetings from the Thriller Driller Killer in the Middle East. Sorry I haven't sent any items in lately - had a change of e-mail address. I notice the numbers of written contributions to Digest are thin...must be a lot of Digesters on vacation ?!?! Just a few personal points on some Trash tracks : 1. I think the track " Bossa Nostra " is a " trash " item from the " Forever Now " album, having listened to it on numerous occasions. The distinct sounds of Phil Gould's drumming, with the hi-hat cymbols raised every 3rd beat of the bar. There's also the wonderful backing vocals of Annie. Plus not to mention the distinctive keyboard playing of Mike, during the bridge, and the accomapnying vocals on the chorus lines, so all in all I reckon it's a track not selected for the album, but should have been. 2. I also think that the track " Sooner or Later " is also a " trash " item, but this is from the earlier, but just as good, " Staring at the Sun " album. Mark's bass guitar is prominent on other tracks off this album, plus the drumming is very reminisent of Gary H. 3. Personally, if I was Paul Crockford, or whoever manages Mark nowadays, I would try and get Mark + Mike together, to develop the haunting track " Stronger "...or at least develop it before the guitars and drums came in and destroyed what could have been a potentially Top 20 single. It has to be one of the best intros I've heard. On a different point of view, someone recently wrote and stated that they didn't like " Starchild ", an earlier track from the brilliant " The Pursuit of Accidents " album. I must disagree, since it has a nice melody and the song is catchy, so I personally like it. In fact, the whole album is great. Reminds me of my early days of staying in my bedroom, playing all the old albums constantly on my stereo. Check out " You can't blame Louis "...great track ! Thank you for reading this piece of Trash. God bless you all. Yours faithfully, Thriller Driller Killer. ------------------------------ Subject: first message From: "Karl Doyle" Organization: MailCity (http://www.mailcity.lycos.com:80) Date: Mon, 16 Aug 1999 12:02:18 -0700 Hello digesters, Ive been reading your messages for a while but its only now that Ive got around to sending something of my own. So here we go.I live in Dublin,Ireland and Ive been a fan since '85. Ive seen the band twice-February 88 with a line up that could only have been described as transitional(i.e they had a geezer called Steve Topping on guitar!!!!)and in early'89,both occasions in venues in Dublin. As I said I picked up on the band in 1985,working my way backward to discover the delights of the earlier albums.Favourite long player?Definitely 'A Physical Presence'...I'm firmly in the pre-'World Machine camp'. Anything of interest, well I did bump into Boon on a street in Dublin shortly after he'd left the band.He was absolutely flabbergasted that someone in Dublin had recognised him!!He seemed friendly enough and when I asked him why he had quit the band he cited"tiredness..amongst other things".Hmmm. I DJ part time in clubs in Dublin playing classic dancefloor friendly soul, funk and disco-Chic,T-Connection,Fatback Band,Brass Construction,Locksmith,Jocelyn Brown,Loose Ends,Kool and the Gang etc. Unfortunately Level 42's rather high profile commercial successes of the late eighties means that the punters in the clubs I play in,baulk at the very mention of the bands name!!! Similar to Kool and The Gang,Level 42's career can be neatly divided into two distinct phases,an early commercially modest but musically expansive period followed by an era of serious chart success on the back of more radio friendly cuts and as result both acts have been undervalued. Wants-the usual..Im loking for a copy of the Sight and Sound in Concert'83,and the bands appearances on The Tube in' 84 and on The Whistle Test in '86. All costs in terms of postage and blank tapes will be covered.Cheers. Because they made us pay $5.00 for a cup of tea when it was the hip thing to drink > Why didn't we recognize the >musical greatness of level 42? Level 42 came during a time of musical bigotry. White radio, under the banner of "DISCO SUCKS" only wanted rock, "if you can dance to it, its evil" Black radio for the most part, stuck with black artist, and Level 42 did not"look" like the were Funky, I know, I watched a program director toss out Standing in the Light based on the album cover. I claimed it. When I read the liner notes and saw that it was produced by Larry Dunn and Verdine White of Earth Wind and Fire, I showed it to my boss only then would he listen to it, but wouldn't add it to the rotation. Citing a quote I will never forget " If they are not going to play (ours) we are not going to play theirs"-true story..... and Jazz radio didn't exist but on low power college radio stations. Then level 42 suffered a "MUSICAL IDENTITY" crisis. Programmers didn't know how to program them. Record stores did know what shelf to put them in and as a result most americans never heard of them. So basically Americans are Stupid > >Insert pithy aphorism here>> Bass players do it in the bottom! > ------------------------------ Subject: Mark King Live on the radio From: "Pascal Koolen" Date: Tue, 17 Aug 1999 00:50:31 +0200 Hi Levelheaddies! My name's Mashhor and I'm a new subscriber. I've known Level 42 since the release of their first album, and till now, I'm still a devoted fan and I love the sound of the bass slap. I'm a musician too. I joined a well-known local band in my country since the year 1980 and I'm a bass player (but not professional though). I've just finished listening to 'ONE MAN' and I must say that's very very impressive! I'd love to hear from someone or from Mark King himself about his special technique in bass slap. I would like to learn more about it. Can anybody help me? Thanks bye.. Mashhor _________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? I would like to make an apology for an error in my last article, entitled " A few thoughts on Trash ". Within the article, I mistakingly mentioned that the wonderful track " Starchild " was from the " Pursuit of Accidents " album. This is totally wrong - of course - it's taken from the earlier debut album " Level 42 " May I offer my sincere apologies for this gross error. I will now return into the darkness of the Caves of Embarrassment - never to be heard of again. God bless you. Yours apologetically, Thriller Driller Killer.
