Sorry about the re-issues, but it is true. Worth waiting for? I think so sir! # LOZ ------------------------------ Subject: Support Changing the Guard From: John Osborne-Archives Date: Fri, 22 Jan 1999 13:50:12 -0000 Hello everyone About a week ago on the digest I pledged my support for the next MK single and loads of people just seem to be complaining about this decision. Who are the people who have been voting for this as their favourite track on the MK website then? Let's face it, there are some great guitar riffs and enough catchy hooks in the song for it to get good airplay on radio, and if the promotions people at Eagle are working hard, the song could reach the top 40. One Man and Love Wars are great songs too, but let's get behind this song. Tell all your friends about the great new MK single! On a slightly different note, has anyone heard if there's any possibility of Mike Lindup making a guest appearance at any of the shows? Some L42 songs live won't be the same without him. Finally, I know I always mention this.... Something About You CDVideo required. E-mail me if you can help! I´ve always thought it was the Level 42 record with "love > games" and "turn it on" . I too was a disbeliever but it's true. Basically only about six were pressed by Elite, Loz knows where five of them are and it was then officially released by Polydor as 'The Early Tapes' but deliberately played down. I wonder how many other people will be saying this in today's digest? From: Vicki Marchant Organization: University College Dublin Date: Fri, 22 Jan 1999 14:19:24 +0000 (GMT) A plea to you all. I am almost certainly going to the Empire gig and I would love to have tickets bought first. Is there anyone who either wants to sell 2 tickets or in near enough to get them for me. I live in Ireland so I can't even use the ticket lines. Please..... someone out there must have a heart. TCOY Vicki ------------------------------ Subject: Steely Don Zipf From: Winman42 @ aol.com Date: Fri, 22 Jan 1999 10:10:08 EST Don, i must disagree with you. I know that Dan has toured extensively since the release of 'Kamikiriad'. I have seen them twice during this perioed. What I am referring to is the fact that a band of this caliber has had less than 5 tours in a 20 plus year career. So, it's not a bogus comment that they rarely tour. Maybe 'toured rarely in the past' would have been netter. They did a 3 hour show when i saw them, which included some very cool instrumental versions of tunes. I thought that would be nice to include on a tour CD. Heck, even Level 42's first live album was a double set!! If your heading into Manchester (and if your giong to that gig you should be) follow signs to the University. This should take you to Oxford road. The Academy is on there. Apparently it is almost opposite Manchester Royal Infirmary. Just thought I'd let you all know. LOZ ------------------------------ Subject: Bass thief From: Robert_Steen/DUB/Lotus @ lotus.com Date: Fri, 22 Jan 1999 16:14:23 +0000 Hi all, Very non-Level 42 posting - As some of you might remember in '97 my Alembic Series II was stolen from my flat in Dublin, it was then recovered, when the police were told who stole it and where it was. As a completion to this story I can now give the details now the court case is over. The thief was called Steuart (sometimes Stewart) Hutchinson-Blue, sometimes he used either surname but mostly he used both. He's from Perth, Australia but was portraying himself as a Scottish Jew, he was acting fanatically Jewish and neither he nor his family are of that faith. He portrays himself as well educated with a strong upper class English accent. He is a con man through and through and what he has done to other people makes what he did to me seem insignificant. He pleaded guilty to the theft of my camera, bass and a vacuum cleaner (this is true he stole a vacuum cleaner) and got let off on community service and will probably be de-ported or leave the country. Even the police here are disgusted with this outcome, especially since we know (but can't prove) he stole about 40 CDs (no Level 42), some videos and my drum machine, he's also obtained large quantities of money out of different people over the years. He's helped set up charities and then funds mysteriously go missing, and generally done very unpleasant things. He's wanted in England and if he's caught there will be prosecuted. He is well travelled and I have stories about him from Canada to England to Australia. Sorry for this posting but I thought some of you might be interested in the conclusion of this story. I hope to see some of you in London on the 30th, I am organising the trip now, a late comer to the tour. Thanks for reading the ranting, Rob Steen. ------------------------------ Subject: next single From: "Bowman, Brian J. (McConnell AFB)" Date: Wed, 20 Jan 1999 08:04:28 -0600 Hi all! I think "One Man" would be the song with the most radio appeal as the next single. However, they'd probably need to remix it a bit different (Lord knows the average attention span out there couldn't take the long instrumental jam that dominates the second half of the song). I know this is too expensive, but Mark could shoot the video in Central America or Mexico on one of those Aztec pryamids, just to give it that Quatzecoatl (sp?) feel ... See ya, Brian Bowman ------------------------------ Subject: Mark's Ten of the Best From: GJWillett @ aol.com Date: Fri, 22 Jan 1999 16:19:17 EST Hi folks, Here's a list of what Mark chose as his Ten of the Best on VH-1 on Wednesday: 1. The Doors - Light My Fire 2. Ian Dury And The Blockheads - What a Waste 3. Grace Jones - Private Life (he mentioned, before this was played, about working a lot with Wally through the 80's, who played keyboards on this track) 4. James Brown - Living In America 5. Chaka Khan/Rufus - Ain't Nobody (Marks most influential female singer) 6. Talking Heads - Once In A Lifetime 7. Elton John - Blue Eyes (said that this reminds him of a song called 'Goodbye Pork Pie Hat (!) by Charlie Mingus (who??). 8. Michael Nesmith - Rio (said that it's very 'tongue-in-cheek' and makes him laugh) 9. The Waterboys - The Whole Of The Moon (wish that he had written) 10. Bill Withers - Ain't No Sunshine Interesting selection I think you'll find! As my English teacher used to say - discuss!! Just check the liner notes on your old Steely Dan, Ray Parker Jr., Boz Skaggs, and even Michael Jackson's "Thriller", and you'll find the names of some very accomplished musicians (Jeff Porcaro, Steve Porcaro, Mike Porcaro, David Paich, Steve Lukather, David Hungate, etc.) who also happen to be members of Toto. Also, David Hungate's work as a producer is pretty good. Just ask Chet Atkins. Enough said. Regarding Chicago, I think the older stuff (CTA thru Chicago V) is still among the best music ever written and recorded. Their music was so diverse with elements like tasty horn lines, luscious ballads, Terry Kath's kamikaze guitar playing, and just plain ol' great songs, a body of work truly deserving of the label "classic". I am currently upgrading my home audio system, and I am shopping around for a new integrated amp to drive my also newly acquired Celestion 15i speakers. I've narrowed my choices down to the Creek 4330 and Musical Fidelity E11. If any of you Levelheads/audiophiles happen to own either of these integrated amps, I'd like your opinion or suggestions on others that are in the same price range. ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Subject: LMN Midi From: Brian Date: Fri, 22 Jan 1999 21:09:54 -0600 "Charl Mocke" <9413693 @ narga.sun.ac.za> wrote: > Hmmm... In all seriousness (and I don't mean this to sound aggresive, I've exchanged plenty a friendly e-mail with Loz), this musical bigotry is nothing to be proud of. I've always doubted the wisdom of ardent fans buying multiple copies of the same tracks by their favourite acts due to minimal differences (colour of vinyl, different photos on sleeve of Bulgarian issue etc.), and when I think about the music Loz has never heard because he wasn't prepared to chance something non-L42 related, it makes me glad I stopped being a completist in about 1984. > I will be there at the Leiceser gig so see you guys there, however, I will be > really quiet so you may well pass me by and never know, although I fear Lisa > will jeoperdise my plans to go incognito. They seek me here, they seek me there... Problem with AIA is that they tried to apply the perfectionist, flawless approach of their studio albums to a live CD (even down to re-recording some bits that had mistakes on them), and it just wasn't appropriate. Add to that the unadventurous choice of tracks, and the uninspired arrangements of those tracks (only Reelin' In The Years really does anything different from the original recording), and it's a dud. On the bootleg CD a fine member of this very digest was good enough to copy for me, there's no end of interesting stuff going on, on a whole mixed bag of tracks. That's what they should have released, something warts and all. > Subject: Light as a feather! > From: Bill Burnett > > Thank you for the Donald Fagen info.
