Ahaaa! Steve , I know where you get your discography information. ;-) The James King album Texas Lullaby is wrongfully cited as having the same personnel as Mark King's Influences in that online database. Probably some weird crosslink in the database. I did some research when I read about James King a few months ago but nothing I found indicates a connection to Mark, last name notwithstanding. :-) James King is a Bluegrass musician from Virginia, USA. I'm doing database conversion work at the moment. While it sounds glamorous, it's not; I'm the high-tech equivalent of the trash man. But one of the things that this requires me to do is load _very_ large files into our system. Some of these get into the hundreds of megs. And this is what I was doing today. One of my friends was helping me with this humongeous file. This file was big. No, bigger than that, even. It was so big it would crash my system whenever I would try to load it into a text editor. So my friend comes along and offers to write an SQL Loader script for it. He wanted the file in tab delimited format because he knows the ASCII character for a tab. I mentioned to him that it was in comma separated format. "What's the ASCII number for a comma?" he asked. After much scratching of the head, I determined that it was 44. And the next value I figured out was 42. The asterisk. What's the answer to the question of Life, the Universe, and Everything? * Just some food for thought. And to those who haven't heard, I'm off to Washington D.C. for a three month engagement. I'd like to get together with some of the East Coast Levelheads when I can, so those of you in the D.C. area, give me a shout. And to those in The City and Boston, I'll let you know when I'll be up for a visit. Later. I met you in Cincinnati, Ohio when you were touring with Chicago. I LOVE your guitar playing. You are TRULY TRULY incredible!!!!!!!!! I simpy cant say enough. I was SO depressed to hear that you were no longer with Chicago. You did such phenomenal justice to their music. Well, anyways, I just thought after seeing you on here (what a coincidence) that I should tell you this. Nice to hear you're still on the scene somewhere. regards, Bert bertwh @ hotmail.com ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Subject: A Group's Place In History From: Cliff.Barua @ ec.gc.ca Date: Thu, 21 Jan 1999 09:29:58 -0500 After reading another fine submission from JohnRGab yesterday, I am dying to know how old you are. Just to be fair, I'll state that I just turned 34. It's just that your whole breakdown of the Beatles thing is rather interesting. Even though I was too young to be a part of that era, I grew up when radio was tailored to the younger Baby Boomers, so that's how I have been educated musically. Level 42 was not a really a victim of their time of fame. Their early music had a jazz fusion-funky-instrumental sound to it that was not commercially viable at that time (late new wave, early synth, drum machines, ABC, Duran Duran, etc). The World Machine / Running In The Family era had some success due to both the quality and accesibility of some of the songs. The late period stuff was lesser in quality and also ran smack into the grunge era. However, many older people were turned off by grunge music and may have turned to Level 42 had the music been better. It's impossible to transpose a group from the 1960's to the 1980's because we do not know what their music would have sounded like in this latter era. The one correct point you made was that there was very little competition for the Beatles - albeit on the _American_ side. Certainly not in England (have you heard of the Rolling Stones, Who, Yardbirds, Animals, Jimi Hendrix Experience, Cream, etc, etc, etc). Unlike the 80's and 90's, the 60's was not an era of "fly by night" supergroups. And unlike the last 15 years, you could not rest on the success of one album and wait 3-4 years to release something new (can you say Stone Roses). You had to be productive and consistent - thankfully Level 42 was releasing approximately an album a year from 1980-1987. Sorry for the long dissertation on mostly non-Level stuff, but this is bound to happen when you have a group (Level 42) that has fans of a wide age difference. Some people grow up with the actual music, others read about it in history books, or watch a lot of VH-1 documentaries (this being the impression I get when younger people talk about groups from the 60's and 70's). By the way, John, your response to my retort last week (on Chicago, Toto) was top notch. Cliff Barua - Toronto ------------------------------ Subject: Knobs? I accept all the responses/points that have been posted on to the digest....I don't necessarily AGREE with them all, but I do accept them ! I also think it is healthy that we can exchange such views and ideas. Back to Level 42....I know it has been mentioned but I want to stress the point. Can fellow digesters attending the forthcoming UK shows refrain from making too many specific comments about the gigs ? Or at least give a warning in the title of their email, indicating that GIG STORY TO FOLLOW .......! The problem is, it COULD be so much better. > A band of this caliber, with the number of GREAT tunes they have, > in addition to the fact that VERY rarely tour, should have been > able to produce a double CD Sorry, Win, but that bit about SD "rarely" touring is bogus, dooooood. I've seen them twice in the last several years, and they came thru once when I didn't go. That perception came from the long period when they didn't tour, but ever since Fagan's Kamakiriad, they've been touring weguwarwy. The first time I saw 'em, they were fresh out on the road (the Alive in America tour), and the show was the best I'd ever seen. They mostly played the big hits, the crowd pleasers. Dennis Chambers had just replaced Peter Erskine on the tour. The second time, they'd been touring for a while, and they had toned the show down, playing some of the more obscure selections from their catalog. They had replaced the "big show" approach with the smoky-club- jazz-band approach. It was still good, but I enjoyed them more the first time. It was cool seeing Cornelius Bumpus with them, though. And, as for the Alive in America CD, what do you people want? I think it's great. * * * * * * * > From: DonZipf @ aol.com > >> To be honest: I'm not. >> It doesn't stand out. >> So it won't be a hit.(However much I'd like it to be.) >> >> I have said it before, and I'll say it again: Love Wars is the song with the >> most hit-potential on One Man. >> > "metoo"! In simple terms for every (1) pound sterling you buy at USD 1.65 add USD 0.10 per unit which gives you the reaL RATE at USD 1.75, remembering to add in that, you got it, service charge of USD 5.00-15.00. The actual trading rates are always lower that what you actually recieve when you purchase, WAIT UNTIL YOU TRY TO SELL THE OLD CURRENCY BACK INTO US DOLLARS, THEY GRAB YOU BUY THE BULLOCKS AGAIN AS IF ONCE WASN'T ENOUGH- My BEST advice: Get as much POUND STERLING as you think you might need, but use your ATM card over in the UK if you can. Per what Carl Muller said, if your PIN number has 5 digits, you might not be able to use it there. Also, make sure that the network that your banking institution uses is worldwide, like Cirrus, Plus, and so on. You get a better exchange rate when you use your ATM/Debit Cards. Although Credit Cards are not as widely accepted as they are here in the USA. Also, when you come back to exchange your GBP into USD they will ONLY accept notes, and NO coins, so use those GBP 1.00 coins at the pub at the airport before you leave, or for a gift, and perhaps even a souvineer for someone's coin collection. Is it correct that since my visit last May that there is a GBP 2.00 coin? YIKES!!!!!! Any more coins and our trousers will fall down from the weighty coins! :) Current exchange as of 01/21/99 at 12.23 PM: Actual Exchange Rate: GBP 1.00 = USD 1.6525 But if you want to BUY or SELL here is the rates: GBP 1.00 = USD 1.777 Buying GBP from USD (When you leave) GBP 1.00 = USD 1.528 Buying USD from GBP (When you come back) Service Charge: USD 5.00 Source: Thomas Cooke Ltd. 1-800-CURRENCY I hope this clears the air, or your wallets and purses as the case seems to be! Buzz is a close personal friend of mine. When I joined Chicago, I bought a very complex effects/amp rack so I hired Buzz to help me understand it all. He's an amazing guy. He has recently invented the Buzz Feiten Tempered Tuning System that has revolutionized the correct way to tune a guitar so far. Many highly respected guitar companies have changed to this new system. He's always experimenting with gear and is one of the best guitarists on the planet. Neil Larson is a great keyboardist and writer too. Definately worth checking them both out. ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Subject: Not American From: "Andre Huijts" Date: Thu, 21 Jan 1999 22:32:11 +0100 Brian wrote: >From: DonZipf @ aol.com > >> To be honest: I'm not. >> It doesn't stand out. >> So it won't be a hit.(However much I'd like it to be.) >> >> I have said it before, and I'll say it again: Love Wars is the song with the >> most hit-potential on One Man. >> >"metoo"!
