I would love the famous Bob C to do an article for Word machine. Eric, will you have the internet article ready in a month or so? Reply here: | | | | As for the theme I'm not really sure. Obviously it is the Pursuit of Accidents issue, with the discography based on that era. But I have an interview with Jakko and bits and pieces from Phil and Boon, latest news of course, proabably some tour stuff, maybe I'll get hold of Mark. The main feature will hopefully be a tour through the Polydor Master tapes revealing everything there is (apart from the crown jewel style rarities (morning, night train, nothing more to say, haunted house) Hopefully that will blow us all away. Jen (IOW) can you get us a photo of that unreleased One Man artowrk up? Let me know. Why quite? LOZ quite shy! Become shy. Use short sentences. :-( I have asked a friend to do a Mike Lindup interview so also I'm seeing how this goes, might not happen till issue 4 that though. Although I hope issue 3 will contain some new news about Mike. I'm not rushing 3 though, I'm doing a bit of a refurbishment, tidying it all up to get a more proffesinal appearence. Moving back up to 28 pages from 24. (The extra 4 page will be taken up with the One Man lyrics, thanks to Boon [hopefully]). I do like Steely Dan's 'Alive In America' CD. The problem is, it COULD be so much better. A band of this caliber, with the number of GREAT tunes they have, in addition to the fact that VERY rarely tour, should have been able to produce a double CD. My problem is I had the 2 CD bootleg of this tour before this official version was released, therefore I've been spoiled. Also, gotta agree with Adz about how psyched I am to meet and greet some old and new friends. Including MK and Jakko. Dawayne, thanks for the heads up on the Champlain solo stuff. I'll have to pick some of it up. You may well be the only one on the digest to know, but are you at all familiar with the Larsen/Feiten band? Buzz Feiten on guitar, and Neil Larsen on keys. Always dug their stuff pretty much, and recently found a Neil Larsen solo CD. Just curious if i'm the only one who is buying this 'old' stuff. Mr. Harter, thanks for posting your reply from bass player mag, although it sounds like the editor was copping out on an answer. I don't believe, however sad it maye be, that 'One Man' will get a US release. Also, I've seen bass Player cover artists without US recordings available. In these cases they have provided the readers with ordering information. Why can't they do this for Mr. King? Regarding the RITF live size cutouts mentioned by Anke. Perhaps Mark was joking when he mentioned these things showing up at petrol stations? I know that years ago in the US, Petrol or Gas stations would have life size cutouts of station attendants. Perhaps Mk was referring to this? Well, back to work. Tcoy, Win ------------------------------ Subject: next single From: "Bowman, Brian J. (McConnell AFB)" Date: Wed, 20 Jan 1999 08:04:28 -0600 Hi all! I think "One Man" would be the song with the most radio appeal as the next single. However, they'd probably need to remix it a bit different (Lord knows the average attention span out there couldn't take the long instrumental jam that dominates the second half of the song). I know this is too expensive, but Mark could shoot the video in Central America or Mexico on one of those Aztec pryamids, just to give it that Quatzecoatl (sp?) feel ... GREEN) Organization: Sheffield Hallam University Date: Wed, 20 Jan 1999 14:13:38 -0000 Hi all, I'm having an awful day. I have to prepare a presentation for tommorow, I can't be bothered, I am sulking and in a foul mood. I stuck on 'One Man' and what would you know, it has done me a power of good. OK, it's made me go all sulky, but thats fine, as long as the music having some kind of mood swinging effect then that is good. Hey, hang on, Changing The Guard has just started, thats perking me up a little bit. I'm slowly feeling better. Though I sit here at my desk swaying about and bopping my head and some of the other students must think I'm slightly disturbed but then again they would'nt understand. So what I am saying is that I'm bored so I decided to write to you all. It's good that the digest seems to have settled down after the period of disturbance. It's a shame the reissues have been put back slightly isn't it. Oh well, back to it. I'm off to the school office to get some card to send out reminders to people who havent yet bought issue 2 or Word machine but did buy issue 1. It's good news that Boon will be working with Mark later this year (or he hopes to) I hope they reform, I don't know what they would call themselves, I've a good idea though, I've been reading this book...................... Ah well, I'll have to leave you now, sorry to take up your digest with my incoherent ramblings (no pithy comeback necessary Mr. Goodwin :-))))) I start lecturing next week and I'm quite nervous, I'll be sure to send out subliminal messages to the student about which band I think they should start admiring, and no, I won't be teaching then spelling or grammar. Today's rate (Jan 20) is approximately $US 1.64 to 1 UK pound. So, I think those projections might be a little high. However, in his defense, the US dollar may start to do worse (great for us Canadians!!) because of the introduction of the Euro. And in a related note, "Every fing's so bleedin' expensive in Blighty, ya betta take a ton of dosh wif ya anyway". (Apologies to Andrew Goodwin for that East End interlude, but I'm a bit down with the dodgy play recently of my beloved Hammers). Just to let you tour attendees know, the rest of us are counting on you for some decent, fair assessments of the King concerts. Perhaps, one of our Dutch friends could plant a MiniDisc recorder in Mark's pocket as he's entering through the artist's entrance :) Glad to see the defense of groups like Chicago and Toto. Thanks, Dewayne! (Wasn't Dewayne a character on "What's Happenin' in the late 70's?) Cliff Barua - Toronto ------------------------------ Subject: Best, worst, what does it really matter? From: LavaD @ aol.com Date: Wed, 20 Jan 1999 11:00:05 EST Hi everyone! I have been reading the digest for only about a week now so forgive me if anything I say is redundant but I would like to comment on Dwayne Bailey's posting from yesterday >Dwayne Bailey >I'm not going to defend Chicago just because I played with them for almost ten >years, but there's other groups who deserve 'worst group ever'. The individual >players in both Chicago and Toto are right up there in chops stature with >level 42 anyday. First of all, I couldn't agree with you more! It seems to me that "best and worst" is a matter of personal taste. From what I have observed so far from the postings in the digest, it seems that a lot of us who are attracted to the music of Level 42, Steely Dan, etc. are so because of some common elements. Of course, this is just my opinion but some of the reasons I like Level 42 are because a)the individual players are at a high level of musicianship, b)the songwriting is really well crafted, c)the music is rhythmically and harmonically interesting with out sacrificing the elements that are characteristic of the style (funk, pop, whatever). d)the final result is a really distinctive band sound. I feel this is true about a lot of groups in a lot of different musical styles, Chicago being one of them. You may like or dislike certian songs or styles ( I don' love ALL of Level 42's songs) but you can't deny that all the pieces are in place. Well, that's my thought for the day! Have a good one---Laura D. ------------------------------ Subject: Mark's what?! (Sorry, that was a tad too predictable, wot?) ------------------------------ Subject: Toto/Lennon From: JohnRGab @ aol.com Date: Wed, 20 Jan 1999 12:37:52 EST Back in my college days in the mid 80's (can it be that long ago?) I took a date to a Toto concert. They were rude, crass, and a bit vulger. They only played 45 minutes and no encore. The sound was poor. The crowd was a good crowd and deserved better. Let me add to the Lennon/Level 42 discussion. The real difference, the way I see it, is the Beatles were the right guys at the right place at the right time. Of the "great" rock-n-roll legends, almost all came from the late 50's, 60's and early 70's. They were the pioneers, the trail blazers. They existed in a time of very little competition. Compared to today's standard, there were only a handful of rock artists back then, as popular music broke away from bigband, swing and the crooners. Hence they became legends. The first to do great things, to embrace and embody the cultural movement of the time. John Lennon was as much a cultural leader and political activist as he was a musician. His FBI file was quite large. I can't imagine how dull Level 42's FBI file is, if there is one at all. If you move the fab 4 to a start date of 1980, they would just be another decent band. King Arthur was not the greatest, most powerful, or most well liked king of Britain's history, but his is certainly the most popular legend.
