From: alienhorse @ uswest.net Date: Sat, 17 Jul 1999 04:38:37 -0700 Greetings JohnRGab @ aol.com & co-Level 42 fans, Everyone has the right to question religion; their own and others'. If done in a NON-religious forum such as this, it is My opinion that it should be relative to the forum's purpose and gone about politely. Metallica is not a 'Christian' band nor a 'Satanic' band. Metallica also questions Military and social and governmental Politics; why haven't you gotten riled about these track topics as well?!?... They are artists, they may write about whatever they wish. Let the parents of children worry about what THEIR kids are listening to if THOSE parents WANT to! Glenn Danzig of Danzig and ex of Misfits, is a very proud member of the Church Of Satan. Just NOW you're finally mentioning someone relative to your non-L.42 related, ongoing rant about "Satan Music"! ...Ever hear anything from a racist band from the '80's named Screwdriver?!?... You haven't mentioned a thing about artists who write openly HATEFUL lyrics, only lyrics that go against your PERSONAL belief and faith in a Biblical (simply a storybook to non-believers) God. Some folks choose for themselves. Some do not need a 'higher power' in which to have faith and to worship, some can have enough faith in themselves to achieve personal 'goodness' and spirituality on their own, without being owned by a chosen "Master". 'To each their OWN'. This is not a Christian Rock or Gospel Music digest. This is not Metallica's fan list (or NON-fan list, in your case). Actually, I am not much of a fan of Metallica either, nonetheless, I can appreciate their musicianship, artistry and uniqueness. Please John, just let it go and let us all get back to discussing the beloved Level 42 and anything RELATED to such. ...Were you also the person that posted the chauvinistic and ignorant (to all genres of music besides 'Top 40' Pop) comments a few weeks back about all Female recording artists of today being boring and non-talented(, or something similar)!!!???!!!... ...'Throwing stones' is not very 'good Christian'-like, if so... If not, 'awaken your musical and art appreciation senses!', to whomever DID post that, head-shakeable remark!!! Good day, Karla Tillers ------------------------------ Subject: US Version v UK Version From: Keith Watt Date: 17 Jul 99 13:16:15 BST Abu Dhabi. United Arab Emirates. Saturday 17th July 1999. Greetings from the Thriller Driller Killer in the Middle East. Can someone please help me with some info : Last 3 tracks on US CD version of " World Machine " : Good Man in a Storm. The Chant has Begun. Lying Still. Last 3 tracks on UK CD version of " World Machine " : Good Man in a Storm. Coup D'etat. Lying Still. Questions : 1. Did Coup D'etat ever appear on US CD version of " True Colours " instead of " The Chant has Begun ?" 2. What was the highest UK album chart position for " World Machine " and " True Colours " 3. Did MK play a fretless bass guitar on " Seven Years ?" 4. Why did Level 42 move from Polydor record label to RCA ? 5. Were the Gould brothers invited to play at L42's last gig at the Royal Albert Hall ? 6. Where can I find " Play Me ? " I miss not having my albums with me. It's like going without sex for a long period of time - you forget how good it is ! Personally, my favourite album is " The Pursuit of Accidents ". Some classic funk tracks, including the title track, and " Eyes Waterfalling ", quoted by one Digest reader as his favourite Top 10 track. Has MK ever played a 5 string bass guitar ? Does a 5 string bass guitar exist ? And does he still play the bass guitar with the red rubies in the neck ? A big thank you to everyone still sending me e-mail. Long may it continue to flow in !!! God bless you all....awaiting my copy of " Trash ". I'm almost as excited about that as about the CD itself, as it's my first autograph from Mark after 15 years as a fan. Haven't had a chance to listen to it yet, as the house is full of in-laws and we're off on holiday (without the in-laws - they're dog-sitting). Oh, btw I posted my cheque on Monday, 2nd class, so that's not bad going. I've got number 67/200. It felt really weird writing a cheque out to Mark King. Well, Majorca beckons. Y viva el Rey! I especially want to thank everybody for being very nice about their correction. I didn't receive a single flame for showing my ignorance about Falco. I stand corrected, Falco did in fact do Der Kommissar first, and ATF did a re-make. I had no idea. I hope that the non-US Digesters aren't sitting around thinking "these Americans, they have no clue." I have spent time overseas in Europe and I've always tried to have an open mind about national, cultural, religious, philosophical, etc., differences between people. I have always disliked people that make assumptions, and here I am, caught making the assumption that ATF was the original author of Der Kommissar. In the future, I'll try not to jump to conclusions. We now return you to your regularly-scheduled Level 42 Digest, already in progress. -- Michael Monsen | If a tree fell on a florist, and phydoux @ xmission.com | nobody was around to hear it, http://www.xmission.com/~phydoux | would he make a noise? ------------------------------ Subject: Trash, Jazz Cafe etc. From: Nigel Collier Date: Sat, 17 Jul 1999 21:41:11 +0100 **TRASH** I now feel capable of writing about Trash on the Digest (why break a 4 year habit?) after the euphoria of receiving the CD - blimey a fortnight ago. I wrote a review within a couple of days of receiving the CD which, I knew at the time was a mistake - and re-reading it, it became obvious that I was a little "wide of the mark" (as John Shuttleworth would say). I won't bore you with what I think of each track but I'll just concur with what others have written, namely that this is a superb album - it certainly doesn't come across as a disparate collection of half finished and unusable ideas. It is 'dark' and it is very (self) critical and personal but it's also full of some really beautiful stuff - Outstanding and Don't Say I Don't immediatly grabbed me - and what can I say about Just Like That? I think my first reaction in the incoherent e-mail to the Digest is still correct: "outrageous". I will pick out one track for some special attention. As Winston observed the other day, Just Like That is a superb attack on the 'music biz' - "Blown away by Mr Suit's big boys" (or somethin like that) "9 to fivers making all the noise" - reference to the contrived boy/girl bands who fill the charts engineered by 'suits' who are in the business and making decisions based purely on profitability and not artistic merit. "Making sure that no-one has the choice".... "Maybe it's conspiracy" The 'suits' ensure that these bands have an effective monopoly on the payola crap that is popular radio and recording. "I could never be what they want me to be" "I could tell them go to hell Start a new sound here for some clean air Open up a door for those who care" Speaks for itself "Churning out the crap, just like that" The endless sausage machine regurgitating the bland lazy stuff that fills the charts "any old riff, gimme a spliff/it swift, it could do the business" Steal any old sample and use that for the basis of the track, or whatever cover version takes least effort, time and talent "I could wear a hat, just like that" Mark having a laugh? - he knows he's no spring chicken so maybe some gimmick might help him pass himself off in today's charts? Isn't Mark also affecting a 'cool' Cockney accent here, again an ironic attempt to appeal to the youth market **JAZZ CAFE** Can any Digester attending a Jazz Cafe or other Mark King gig please take a minute to let me know at Nigel.Collier @ ncl.ac.uk and I'll add you to the attendees list at http://www.ncl.ac.uk/~nnac/kingList.html. THANKS. ***ETC.*** >Seek and Destroy >We're scanning the scene >In the city tonight >We're looking for you >To start up a fight Yes this is distasteful but filling the Digest with whole lyrics just gives it the kind of bandwidth and attention it seeks. This whole satanic thing is much like 'gangsta rap' - it's all bluster and big talk - I suspect the 'artists' in question are probably just displacing some deep-seated perceived 'unmacho' chip on their shoulder - like being short or having very small genitals. Singing about this kind of stuff is very safe - I wonder how many ACTUALLY practice what they preach - in years of drinking in English pubs I can't say I've ever been invited for a drunken brawl in a pub car park by Metallica types. It's mostly just an unwholesome fantasy so try not to worry about it - they'll grow up one day. Regards Nigel "I don't wanna wee in your fire" ------------------------------ Subject: Jamiroquai gig From: "Gaetan Duperron" Date: Sat, 17 Jul 1999 13:54:32 PDT To Alex Friesen and other interested parties: I was at the Jamiroquai show last night (Friday) at the Metropolis in Montreal. I pretty much agree with everything that you wrote, Alex. 45 minute wait, young crowd, very high energy, horrible sound (although the vocals were pretty well mixed), same set-list, etc. The Rolling Stones tune was "Miss You", and it turned out to be the evening's highlight. The crowd was singing along, doing that "Wo-oo oo-oo oo-oo-oo" thing all the way through, to which Jay and the band seemed pleased. The song ended, and he complimented the crowd on its singing, actually pandering by saying that they were the tour's best singers so far. Well everybody liked that so much that they started singing again and wouldn't stop. So, JK did the only thing that he could, and kicked the band back into the song. We got another couple of minutes of it, at the end of which he looked absolutely ecstatic and took the mike again to say, "That was SO f%?&in' WICKED, man!!!" Yeah, it was pretty cool. So, yes, a good show. He mentioned coming through this part of the world again in November. Hopefully they'll have the kinks worked out by then, especially that god awful sound. Dude, give me some bass definition! G ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Subject: What?
