From: Winman42 @ aol.com Date: Wed, 7 Jul 1999 08:37:53 EDT Mikey, i see you make some good points, but I really don't think that Greg meant his message as a 'personal' attack against you. I'm sure he might have been able to word it a little 'better', but perhaps he was trying to make a statement regarding rampant rumours on the digest. No if you would just tell us all where the #%#^ you got this info, we can all make nice, and be friends again! ha,ha,ha Win p.s. hopefully it will be luck regarding who gets the 42nd copy of TRASH. I wonder if someone actually requested the 42nd copy? ------------------------------ Subject: Trash From: Cliff.Barua @ ec.gc.ca Date: Wed, 7 Jul 1999 09:02:06 -0400 Thanks to those that have posted information indicating that they have received their "Trash" CD's. I'm sending out my request today. To reiterate what others have said, please do not copy this for your mates and deny Mark his rightful earnings. And believe me, coming from me, this is a stretch. I'm such a pirate, I should be walking around with a patch over my eye :-). (However, I'm not into selling or buying pirated copies - I just share my stuff with mates) But my beef is with the despicable record companies and to a much lesser extent, the retailers - not the artists themselves. Where an artist is making his works available himself - and let's face it, Mark is not some up-and-comer hoping for a little exposure - I have full respect for him. I believe Prince has also done this before, and I don't always respect him for his pettiness. Let's support Mr King in this endeavour - it could always lead to Volumes 2 and 3!! Perhaps the era of legally avoiding the record companies, at least for demos and live recordings, is upon us. And before anyone gets high and mighty on me, I purchase the CD's of the artists that I like and respect most. I'll always prefer the original CD to a CD-R or MiniDisc anyday. But as artists continue to release albums with only a few (or one) worthwhile songs on them, the number of "homemade compilations" tends to increase. And how exactly does one acquire that rare live recording, or long out-of-print B-side from the record company that's more interested in greatest hits compilations?? Aye, matey, aye. Cliff Barua - Toronto (Perplexed Pirate of Pickering) ------------------------------ Subject: Trash CONFUSION!! From: Winman42 @ aol.com Date: Wed, 7 Jul 1999 09:05:48 EDT In response to Carl's message on today;s digest: I am NOT selling copies of TRASH!!! We only want folks who have ordered copies to sent their name and country, so we can keep a tally of how many digest folks have ordered this CD. Again I repeat, we are NOT selling the CD. Today I received 10 orders for the CD, so perhaps we worded the original message incorrectly. Please let us know if you have ordered the cd TRASH from MARK KING directly. Thanks, Winston p.s. If you have any friends who dont have internet access, pls make them aware of TRASH. ------------------------------ Subject: "I've guoted Winman" ooops ! From: "willem van der veen" Date: Wed, 7 Jul 1999 15:19:48 +0200 I quote, "I find it VERY suprising that someone would not purchase a CD because they thought the artwork was inferior to other CD'.s Isn't it supposed to be about the music?" YES YES my man now we are talking, What about "the man was bitten in his face, I do not listen to his music" or worse "he sings Dutch lullaby's to his kids , (yeah Bassie and Adriaan rules)" Do not judge on someone's behavior (f.i. Robbie W) "looks"(f.i. Shania) and so on !! Judge the music !! "Also, while I trust the musical judgement of most digest members, whenever one of the band members releases material, I HAVE to listen to it myself, and make my own judgement." Right!, but..... with some litlle help of other peoples opinion you can review an album with an other perspective My first thougt listening to One man was indeed "The level has increased again" !! Can't wait listening to "Trash".... Ciao, bye, grusse .... From: "Hayes, Ken [qual] IE" Date: Wed, 7 Jul 1999 16:55:00 +0100 People were recalling recently T.V shows that Level 42 appeared on and it sparked a memory of when I saw Mike and Mark appear on 'This is your life' when Nigel Kennedy was being honoured. Did anyone else see this, and maybe tape it?It would be nice if someone put it up on the net if they did. It was about 5 years ago I think. Also if someone is interested ,I have a magazine interview with Mark from the time he lived in the Gresham Hotel that very few people would have seen. The magazine was Irish made and only lasted a few issues so it's O.K to scan and put on the net if someone running a site wants to mail me to tell me how and where to send it. Greetings ! My name is Keith Watt, otherwise affectionately known as "Killer" and I am pleased to have joined this great website. I am in my mid-30's and have been a Level 42 fan from Day 1, when I found a copy of the Early Tapes on Vinyl, in a record shop down some back alleyway in London, and ever since then I have been mesmorised by the group's musical compositions and lyrics. Each band member, from the origianl four-some to the last gig (which I attended and was a very sad night) have contributed to the success of this mega British funk group. There will never be another Level 42, although some groups have tried unsuccessfully to mimic the great ones. I have been waiting for some time to purchase the re-issues on CD, since my collection is truly made up of vinyl, but out here in the Middle East it takes forever and a day to receive the latest productions, so I have a good source of friends who can purchase the stuff I need and send it to me. Here's to a long and happy reading future. This tape is now thought to be in the hands of the band - after once being at the centre of a legal dispute. " And it reminded me of a studio tape of Level 42 someone gave me back around 1986. (Don't ask who or how he had it), I think I made a copy of it at the time, and I've managed to find it amongst some of my junk. Track 1: instrumental of Turn It On (Mark Humming most of the tune) Track 2: Dune Tune - very rough quality mix Track 3: I have no idea what this is, it's an intrumental, a sort of 12 bars blues type thing, Marks not even slapping - he does a very simple walking bassline. Boon does a solo somewhere around the middle! Is this 'Haunted House' or 'Night Train'? I'd love to know. The bad news: The information above was regarding the second side of the tape, by brother kindly taped over at least half of the first side of the tape with some 80's pop. I rememeber him doing this and not being amused at the time, very typical of by brother! Track ?: The end of Starchild cuts in, Mikes vocals are very low in the mix - I can't make out waht he's humming! Next up is "Heathrow" - fairly similar to the finished version except the mix is well not up to the album, there's no sax solo during the middle 8! "Almost There" - Marks making up the humming on the chorus which is quite enetertaining. Some alternative lyrics on the verse!! And that's it. I'm afraid I can't rememeber what was taped over, possibly something from the first album, or an instrumental that was never released? I guess this tape (although not of great sound quality) deserves a good home. I have one other Level 42 story which I'll save for another day. MARK AUSTRALIA ------------------------------ Subject: Mark's Solo Work From: Bill Montgomery Date: Wed, 07 Jul 1999 18:31:04 -0500 My freinds, being a relative newcomer to the digest and reading your often insightful, and always diverse and intresting comments concerning Mr. King's solo efforts has demonstrated the following effect on me: 1) I became aware of music that was totally unknown to me ( I live in the U.S., the country that is still largely in denial that Level 42 ever existed), 2) I got excited as hell, and I bought " Influences" and " One Man" as quickly as the technology would allow ( a million thanks to the other digesters who informed me as to how to obtain them), and 3) I was able to hear the evolution of a musician and human being for whom I have the greatest respect. Having said that, let me offer my yet another view. It is my considered opinion that in comparison to the MINDLESS JUNK which which now largely pollutes the American music scene, Mr. King has presented two broadly diversified works of art! It is my hope, that these works are only the precursors of what may be his finest work yet. I am looking foward to " Trash" with great anticipation, and am about to visit Mr. Muller's wonderful website to obtain this music as rapidly as possible. To Mr. King: Thank you; I believe that your present gesture may be unprecedented in the music industry, and I hope that you make enough money to start offering your new music on this basis from this day on. Respectfully, Bill M. ------------------------------ Subject: FW: Trash From: "Andre Huijts" Date: Thu, 8 Jul 1999 08:04:06 +0200 Winston, Carl, Lisa Sorry folks, but do we really need to "keep track" if Mark is sending the Trash CD's quick enough ? The fact that some of the digestmembers have already received the CD should give us trust enough that Mark is keeping his promise, and seems to deliver quicker than any mailorder company will ever do. Besides the address of Joe Daflo's is correct, and I guess we would have heard in one way or the other had it been a fake. Now orders will be flowing in quite a bit more, it is likely that it will take a little longer for Mark to send the CDs. Just doesn't feel right when we get offered something so special (which other artists will do this ???) to go and play "watchdog". Just my thoughts. Winston, the other idea about voting for our fav. track is a great one ! Can't wait for the CD to arrive !
