From: "Hayes, Ken [qual] IE" Date: Thu, 1 Jul 1999 13:00:00 +0100 Theres been a lot of talk lately here about music in 80's V's 90's and which was better or worse ,so I compiled some of the Worst Lyrics (from what I believe them to be saying, ) from songs from both decades. TOP TEN 1.T'PAU : China In Your Hands: "It was a thing he had on the skin she had, told in a foreign land.To take life and love to the second bud , but the man was in command" ...deep. 2.Duran Duran :The reflex : " ....and watching overlapping clover ,isin't that bizarre, every little thing the reflex does, leaves another question mark." ? 3.Hanson :Mmmbop :" ..em..mmbop something, something..." What the lyrics are Is a secret No-one Knows. 4.Manic Street Preachers(NEW ENTRY!) : If you tolerate this your children will be next. "..and if I can't shoot rabbits, then I can't shoot fa-aa -scists" How intelligent they are. 5.Go West :We close our eyes : "We close our eyes ,we never lose a game, imagination never lets us take a break,we close our eyes concede the final frame.......we've got tigers in the dark, we are burning." Obviously about playing snooker with an 80's pop group who won't let them stop playing, even though they've caught fire. 6.Spandau Ballet : True : " Take these seaside arms and write the next line, for I want the truth to be known" Spandex Bollocks . 7.Tanita Tikarim: Twist in my sobriety :" " Where do you start? 8.Cast : You've got to fly : "You've got to fly, You've got to fly, You've got to fly, You've got to fly, it's just like flying through the air, it's just like flying through the air, it's just like flying through the air, it's just like flying through the air, it's just like flying through the air, Ahhhhh,Ahhhhh,Ahhhhh,Ahhhhh etc " For similar lyrics see entire back catalog! 9.Tasmine Archer : Sleeping Satelite. "I blame you for the moonlit sky and dream I died ,and I wonder why....don't blame the sleeping satelite" What the fuck is she on about? 10.Wet Wet Wet : Angel Eyes :" Sick of leaving in the morning with the night you gave away, said I'm going to get all that I can get. Put those angel eyes that make sense..(a bit blurry here).. all the time, said I'm going to send them home, a-and a way yeh e-yeh." Shit, I should have made this No.1. Any Gems I've missed?P.S. If your a fan of any of the above don't bother correcting any misinterpretations 'cos it's only a bit of fun. Ken. ------------------------------ Subject: The Style Council From: Dan Nesselroth Date: Thu, 01 Jul 1999 06:15:54 PDT Ben, I am glad you mentioned the Style Council...they are an interesting band to say the least. Paul Weller of THE JAM put the Style Council together...and it is a billion light years from THE JAM. They are jazzy and light in terms of music, communist in terms of politics. "Long Hot Summer" is my favorite Style Council track, and if you like funk (who here does not?!) "Money Go Round" has got it! Although compared to LEVEL 42, the bassline is dull. These days Paul Weller has taken on a harder sound, full of distortion and bitterness. This usually happens to pinkos who hit 50. ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Subject: From: olix @ iol.it Date: Thu, 1 Jul 99 13:49:37 +0000 (Hi, I am playing in funk-acid jazz band called "Acidicca". Oliver ------------------------------ Subject: One Man From: BOWERSS @ ONR.NAVY.MIL Date: Thu, 1 Jul 1999 10:18:21 -0400 Just picked up a copy of "One Man". It took a long time to get here to the States. At first when reading all the Euro critics pros of the CD, I thought that you were pretty hard on Mark and thought to myself several times, "Oh Just give the man a break", but now having heard it, I pretty much agree with the nay-sayers. Not danceable, way too slow, almost sounds like an album (CD for you youngsters) full of side B tracks. No where near Level 42 caliber music of lyrics for that matter. "Bitter Moon" is the only single worthy tune on the thing, and "my God" did Mark break his thumb, did he cut off the circulation with all that tape, did he loose the groove, what the hell happened? Where is the funk??????? Don't get me wrong, I know it's his prerogative as a musician to be an artist, but an artist must not totally abandon his staple sound and alienate his fan base. I am a true Mark King Fan, I am a bass player, I am from the United States and I grew up in the 70's and 80's, my personal instrument of choice is a Mark King Signature Series Alembic custom built for me from the factory. Because of these factors, I think that the word alienated is a little strong for the way I feel, but I do feel very disappointed. I wanted to pull out my bass and be mesmerized by his musicianship, blown away by thunderous bass lines, and put in a trance by lyrics that stimulated every nerve ending in my body ("Leaving Me Now"). It didn't happen, after "Bitter Moon" t all went down hill for me. Mark, if you are out there and you read this, you are still the man. Nobody can make everybody like everything all of the time, and I respect your decision to produce this CD if this work is what is truly in your heart. Sometime, I would like to know what inspired you to write so much music that seems to go against the grain of what we are used to hearing from you. Bass Players Rule!! Jenny ------------------------------ Subject: Metallica and Wholesome in the same sentence From: JohnRGab @ aol.com Date: Thu, 1 Jul 1999 12:59:07 EDT Brian- Back when I was a teenager my school had a group of angry young men the rest of us called head-bangers. They were a violent, dirty, foul-mouthed lot who liked to hang out and make trouble before, during and after school. Lots of drugs, fights and Fs on the report card. Many of them didn't have great homelifes. A lot of them failed at the game of life. Their groups of choice were AC/DC, Judas Priest, Ozzy Ozborne, Van Halen, Queenscryche, Kiss, Ted Nugent etc. and Metallica. Anything loud and evil sounding. Metallica may have tried passing themselves off as a wholesome Christian band, same as the "reformed" Mr Ozborne, that I don't know. All I can tell you is looking at the kids who are fans, I don't see them as a church going lot getting a positive, wholesome message from the music. Hence I group it into the Satan category, although they may not be actual members of the Church of Satan. It walks somewhere between symptom and cause. Garth Brooks(for 4-year-olds) Lilith Fair women groups(so incrediby boring)ANY female singer today is hopeless(although TLC's crazysexycool had some great songs)and Ricky Martin is so bad that he makes me ill.Let's face it,music off the late 90's is almost as bad as the 50's ------------------------------ Subject: infuences From: exhobie @ webtv.net (greg white) Date: Thu, 1 Jul 1999 14:15:37 -0400 (EDT) Oliver, with your influences being L42,Jamiroquai,and Steely Dan,you're off to a good start with your band.Good luck to you ------------------------------ Subject: Telephonenumber Ticketmaster From: "Marcel Hoogervorst" Date: Thu, 1 Jul 1999 23:12:20 +0200 Thank you to those who helped me to order tickets for Mark's gigs. From: Mike Payne Date: Thu, 01 Jul 1999 20:41:15 CDT Hello again my fellow LEVELHEADS! WELL, where to start!? I have confirmed (@SRC) that indeed a one-night show has been booked, although not at Wembley, somewhere else.....although in the way I kindda like...... It look like it is going to be in the Summer of 2000 in Hyde Park! Artist like Paul Young, FYC, Howard Jones, Breathe, Tears for Fears (original line-up), Simply Red............and you got it LEVEL 42 and others "yet to be confirmed".........When I get more info, I will pass it along ASAP! If this 'really' happens................WOW!!!!!! I will be there front-and-center!
