It is kinda dull, but it is not >artistically offensive. For that, listen to "Resupply", "I Want Eyes", >"Time Will Heal", and "Pictures On the Wall". Note that 2 of them are >King sans L42. Sorry, for me, Chinese Way trumps 'em all. I like I Want Eyes and Pictures On The Wall, though I, too, could do without the other two. It's been said before, but Time Will Heal sounds like Mentos music. On the Mark solo note, I've finally had enough time to decide what I like and don't like on One Man. Here's my ranking: One Man (why wasn't THIS the single?) Swimming With (The) Sky Half Written Songs Changing The Guard Take My Hand then there's a significant drop down to Bitter Moon Love Wars Pamela Resupply If I Had Something... the last two being two of the most boring songs I've ever heard. This album had potential, but it needed maybe two more hi-energy songs to punch it up. I hope he has more "angry" songs in his next release. :D >There has been much talk of 80's bands lately, but only scant mention >of Duran Duran. There are two ways to think of Duran Duran. Some people >think of them as a highly contrived pop band, superficial and little more >than style over substance. The other way to think of them is to think of >them as a great and unique band who sold out completely and yet still >retain their talent. There's a third way to look at them. A great and unique band whose evolving style of music both matched and shaped what was popular at the time. I don't view them as a "sell out" at all, in fact, I abhor any use of the term "sold out," I think it's extremely pretentious. >Good post alex--music certainly changed for the better in the early >80's--Even one-hit wonders were a lot of fun (Kajagoogoo,Naked Eyes,Human >League ,etc.) THERE YOU GO! Brilliant post! The main difference I see in 80s vs 90s was inventiveness. With a new group, you never quite knew what you were going to here. Today, you have a few different kinds of groups being played, with very little inventiveness (about the only imaginitive songs I've heard lately are "The Blues" by Everlast and the remix of "That Don't Impress Me Much" by Shania Twain, only because I didn't expect it out of her -- there are a few other inventive songs, but they're not coming to mind right now). Backstreet Boys/N-Sync/Britney Spears/Boyzone/Spice Girls/etc. all turn out pleasant music, but it's been sounding the same for awhile now. And that Ricky Martin song's REALLY getting on my nerves now. :D >PS In celebration of Scritti Politti's resuscitation after 11 years >without an album (who does Gartside think he is, Donald Fagen?), I'm >hankering after a CD copy of the glorious debut Songs To Remember. Anybody >help? Sorry, Nightfly, Songs To Remember wasn't "their" debut. They had (I believe) three independently released EPs in their original configuration, then most of the band left as Green changed his focus from their original deconstructed punk sound to a smoother funk sound on STR, released by Rough Trade. Agreed, it's an excellent album, though I only have an Italian release on vinyl. I've seen the CD floating around occasionally on eBay, though A) I wonder if the ones I've seen are CD-R's, and B) They end up being very expensive. When's the new album coming out and where can I find info? However, we did find reference to Follow Me in the archive listings relating to early out-takes of the track made in March 1983 during recording sessions for I Want Eyes, People and other tracks for the Standing in the Light album. However, as a 24-track unmixed recording we were unable to listen it !!! Sorry! ------------------------------ Subject: What's out of print? From: croehm @ mindspring.com Date: Wed, 30 Jun 1999 17:29:03 -0400 Does anyone know if "Level 42" and SITL are out of print? I checked CDNow (not the only authority, I know, just the only one I checked) and they had all CDs available except for the aforementioned. I already have them, but some people may not, and here is the reason I'm suddenly curious: I stumbled across a website today (slow day at the office) where this guy is asking people to vote for their favo(u)rite New Wave album that's out of print (I guess he's on a crusade to get record companies to bring back old albums). I thought that if the above were out of print, we could submit our boys to his list. Of course we don't exactly consider L42 to be New Wave, but there were a ton of 80s bands on the list, and L42 wasn't. Who knows if this website has any influence, but with no word on the reissues, we could at least show our interest somewhere else. Besides, Warren Zevon was winning the tally with 150 votes, because their digest heard about the list. Anyway, this is probably an inane quest, but if you want to check it out, go to www.thegrid.net/mpaulsen/albums.html . On another note, I found a used copy of the Talbot/White CD "United States of Mind" where Phil Gould appeared on a few tracks. I don't really know any Style Council stuff, but this disc is acid jazz-type music, like Brand New Heavies. Different from L42, but good stuff. And lastly, what ever happened to Hein Goeman? That's me today, Chuck ------------------------------ Subject: Website Announcement (Non - Level 42) From: Ben Wilson Date: Wed, 30 Jun 1999 14:56:58 PDT Hi y'all Just to let u know that I have set up my own website which you are more than welcome to go and visit if you wish. If you take a look at a few early 80s top 10s you might be surprised at the drivel there was around. Anybody else remember the medley craze (those Stars on 45, keep on burning in my mind)? Renee & Renato? Joe Dolce keeping Vienna off No 1? Every age has its share of novelty and pap, and the 80s was certainly no exception. > Do you imagine that bands like Steps will be remembered as much as Level > 42, Simply Red, The Human League and Depeche Mode in the next millennium ? Notwithstanding the fact that outside of circles such as these, Level 42 are all but forgotten already (sorry folks, but it's true), if they continue the way they're going then yes, Steps will be. Not out of any great artistry but out of sheer popularity. Hell, Abba are still topping the UK album charts with their simplistic fodder 20 years on.
