You can read it in the music press over the last couple of years. Never have I known a time when there are so many "boy" / "girl" bands like Steps, B*witched, Boyzone, 911, Vengaboys etc... Where are all the real lyricists who write tunes which stand the test of time ? The 80s clubs in London are really popular these days so it has to say something for the music of that time. Do you imagine that bands like Steps will be remembered as much as Level 42, Simply Red, The Human League and Depeche Mode in the next millennium ? ...and Robbie Williams hardly compares with some of the great vocalists of the 80s..... ------------------------------ Subject: MK Switching to New Type of Bass... Mark has been using Burnie's basses over the last couple of months and I'm told by Burnie he is 'wrapped with them' - Both Burnie and Mark has been involved in some photo shoots in South London / IOW for promo of the new basses - Expect to see some pics in the press real soon. I don't think I've ever heard the EP version, but "re-mixing" a live recording does not make it any less live. ALL live multi-track recordings are re-mixed for release. Of course, the term "re-mix" these days has more than one meaning, so perhaps you mean that post-production was done, in which tracks were added (known as "sweetening" the mix) or mistakes were fixed. > I think had 'Follow Me' been a next single after 'Something About You' > it may have charted in the USA along with 'Leaving Me Now'...you > guys/gals think so? Peace - Z. ------------------------------ Subject: L42 crap, Linda Clifford, Duran Duran From: Dan Nesselroth Date: Tue, 29 Jun 1999 08:23:31 PDT The Chinese Way....many people hate this song, but it is hardly the worst L42 track.. in my opinion that is. It is kinda dull, but it is not artistically offensive. For that, listen to "Resupply", "I Want Eyes", "Time Will Heal", and "Pictures On the Wall". Note that 2 of them are King sans L42. Onto less obnoxious matters....Does anyone know of an artist by the name of LINDA CLIFFORD? She had a song called "Runaway Love". I am very interested in finding out more about her. It sounds like a funky kind of disco. There has been much talk of 80's bands lately, but only scant mention of Duran Duran. There are two ways to think of Duran Duran. Some people think of them as a highly contrived pop band, superficial and little more than style over substance. The other way to think of them is to think of them as a great and unique band who sold out completely and yet still retain their talent. I am in the latter camp. I have everything Duran Duran ever did...even the late 80's and the 90's stuff. Unlike other mass market idol bands, Duran actually put themselves together and wrote all their music. This cannot be said of The Backstreet Boys or The Spice Girls....or even Madonna. Simon Le Bon has the most astounding voice in music and Nick Rhodes talent has never been fully recognized. Their music was highly sexual and combined punk and disco in a way that was not only appealing, it was culturally offensive to both camps! Duran's attitude of shamelessness led them to sell out...they simply did not have a problem with it. The 60's were long over and the 80's were starting. Selling out was good and THEY were insturmental in breeding such notions. When the 80's attitudes began to turn around Duran became somewhat placeless yet they kept making good music in a more obscure kind of fame....because the at the core of Duran Duran lay an artistic talent and energy. They were considered "New Romantic" in the early 80's. Other bands in this genre included Roxy Music, Human League, Spandau Ballet, and A Flock of Seagulls. All of them are gone, except Duran Duran. They were utterly distinct from the pap of New Romantic music. RIO, their second album, is one of those rare albums that can be listened to from start to finish in one sitting. Even the tracks that were not singles are amazing. And the latest album "Medazzaland" (1997) is much the same in that sense. What do I have to say about the 80's vs the 90's? Even Duran Duran played more than 2 chords. ------------------------------ Subject: 80's music From: exhobie @ webtv.net (greg white) Date: Tue, 29 Jun 1999 11:34:26 -0400 (EDT) Good post alex--music certainly changed for the better in the early 80's--Even one-hit wonders were a lot of fun (Kajagoogoo,Naked Eyes,Human League ,etc.) ------------------------------ Subject: Re: [ILF] FOLLOW ME! From: Winman42 @ aol.com Date: Tue, 29 Jun 1999 11:32:55 EDT Don, if you like i'll send you a copy, or maybe an MP3 version of the tune in question. It is really a 'REMIX' in the dance sense of the word, not just a 'sweetining' of the song. Sounds cool, but not something they pulled off live in concert. Perhaps a year ago i posted a comparison of the two versions. I will repost if I can find it. Also, I have to agree with Don, as much as I love the band, I don't think that Follow Me would have hit as a single. At least not in this country. The personnel were as follows: Tommy Z. [my guitar player, came to the NYC ILF] on guitar, Alandis Reeves [also an ILF NYC attendee, longtime Levelhead, Winman's buddy] on bass, Laura Dreyer [sitting in for now, eventually doing alto sax] on keys, Tyler Land [my boyfriend] on drums, me on scratch vocals, and Winman on all around sound patrol [he helped the engineer come up with drum machine sounds for a click track]. We had a good time and it sounded awesome. Laura's friend Sara will be playing keys, and she and I will lay down our tracks with Laura in two weeks. The song will sound good. That brings up another question. Is this project moving forward? We've seen the e-mail from Stargirl who offered to put a song on and got no response. Morgan, are you out there? If he can't do it, someone definitely should. Just my two cents. Lolita ------------------------------ Subject: Warning--Non Level 42-related post! Here in H-Town we've gotta put up with suffocating humidity in addition to the Texas sun resulting in temperatures in the low to mid 90's that feel like temps in the mid to upper 100's! Unfortunately, I don't think that "Follow Me" had a mindless enough hook to be a hit on the US Pop charts in 1985, although "it had a good beat and you could dance to it". If "Follow Me" had a popular video on MTV, then that popularity most likely could have carried over to the US pop charts, which are ruled for the most part by teeny boppers with very bad tastes and limited listening abilities. This was perpetuated by the very advent of music video and MTV. No matter how awful a song was, if it had a popular video on MTV, it was almost sure to be a hit. "Easy Lover" by Phillip Bailey & Phil Collins is a hit song very reminiscent of "Follow Me". Although it was a great song on its own merits, "Easy Lover" was also helped quite a bit by the fact that the video was in heavy rotation on MTV. "Follow Me" most likely would have charted in the adult contemporary category. That's where you can find the few pop songs that actually have any substance regardless of the popularity of their videos. Level 42's all-too-brief stay on the US pop charts is a testimony to the teeny bopper factor on MTV, in US record stores, and on pop radio. The same can be said about "Leaving Me Now", which I'm sure would also have been a huge adult contemporary hit single in the US back then. I have heard that everyone except Wally Badarou has agreed to this arrangement. Also, that Wembley Arena has been contacted by Crockford to reserve the arena for the first of August. I have also heard that Paul Crockford is trying to arrange the original line-up from Tears for Fears together to perform at the same concert as an "80's Review Show".
