Have an Ant Invasion reunion tour or something. Adam and the Ants were my favourite band before L42 came along. I still listen to material from Kings of the Wild Frontier. I think it was a landmark album, moving away from punk to the tribal sound. However, I never really liked his later work as a solo artist, so that's when I seeked an even wider music range to listen to. I will always regret never seeing the Ants live in concert. I met Terry Lee, one of the drummers last year and he told me that there had actually been some discussion about a reunion. Like the situation appears to be with L42, the front man seems to be the one who is not too keen on getting things back together again. We know that Mike Lindup too has his reasons as well for not joining up again, at least for the moment at any rate. You might ask what would L42 be like without Mark's bass playing and what would the Ants sound like without Adam. They need each the guys to do their reunion tours. Until that happens, we can only live in hope. Btw, I got into L42 when a school mate played me the Chinese Way in 1983. I just wish I'd first seen them play live before 1986. ------------------------------ Subject: Jennifer Lopez From: FortunatoX @ aol.com Date: Mon, 28 Jun 1999 08:30:11 EDT >The 1980s gave us Level 42 and The Nightfly. But I was serious about the "reunion by request", after all record companies are there to sell records and in my opinion there are many of us here waiting, hoping for that. Maybe Mark and the others won't be interested, but ...well if they see such a great enthusiasm, I don't know... Stupid idea? Maybe. " Overthere ". I have never heard changes so I can't wait to see if there is some similarity in melody. As for the Knicks there always next time! So I can't comment on the bad stuff. As far as there not being enough acoustic stuff from the 90's and too much grunge, well I don't care much for the grunge sound, so I tuned it out. Completely. About all I know about grunge is Kurt Cobain offed himself. Hence, all the bands I tuned into, like Kerosene Dream, were small time guitar pickers with a very acoustic sound. Frankly, at my place of employment we have Muzak on tape filled with publicly acceptable nineties hits. Not bad to listen to the first time around, but listening to the same 2 hour tape over and over and over, day after day after day, all because the property manager wouldn't allow my company to put up a satelite dish to receive Muzak FM, I frankly got sick to death of the songs I liked and never bought the albums. A good example would be a group called the Corrs (or the Karrs or something like that), female vocals with a an acoustic Irish flair, real nice. After being forced to listen to the same set of songs over and over at work, I just couldn't bring my self to buy the album. I like to leave work at work, and the good sounds of the nineties, unfortunantly get left there also. Like Toad the Wet Sprocket. Something About You was on one tape....sigh.... I also spent most of my music budget collecting Level 42 singles. Along with a lot of other digesters, I really enjoyed the music of the 80's. I spent 81-84 in high school and 84-90 in college. Lot of memories and good times, but it isn't going to get me to disrespect other musical eras and sounds. Well, except rap. I really don't like rap. Or that Satan stuff like Metalica, I don't like that either. Or Marilyn Manson. "So many years ago heroes ruled the world (some died for love) / They were the only ones in a cruel world." Images of good guys fighting off all the badies to save their true loves. Doesn't that just conjure up images of bravery and righteousness? I could go on, but I sense a mass movement towards the scroll bar. Any Chinese digesters care to comment on this fine song? >>Who out there really fell for Mike And The Mechanics anyway? > >Hey, they put on a good concert, and have had at least an album and a half >of good songs come forth from their four or five albums. > If you want comedy from Mike Rutherford, check out the album he did pre-Mechanics. Hahahahahahahahahahahahaha! >The 80's were fun, but I wouldn't call it the most innovative period of >music. > I beg to differ. In 1983 MIDI appeared, and the popular music world was changed forever. Non-keyboard players like me could suddenly grab a computer and bring compositions to life like never before. And, methinks, that's what drove many of the 1980's haircut bands. True keyboard players (like whatsisface in Toto--Paich?) shone much more brightly: suddenly they could layer sounds all they wanted. ...Alex... A lot of people write in on a regular basis criticising to topics on the digest. Well, here is a news update. There really isn't any Level 42 news. Nothing new yesterday, nothing new today, nothing new tomorrow. Level 42 doesn't exist anymore, and until Loz convinces Polydor, (or who ever owns them now) to release the remastered albums with all those lost tracks, there won't be any news (Loz??). Maybe the occasional concert to review, maybe a solo from Boon or Mike, or a Level fest to comment on, but not today. In the meantime we are just B.S.ing about WhatEver. Mostly music, and a little arguing. I find some of it dull, and I scroll down. Some is quite funny (Nightfly has a great dry sense of humor). I don't like the occasional foul language, but since some of my friends speak that way, I am not getting down (too much) on digesters who do. Except maybe Gaetan who spoke for God one day. And that was just once, and for the most part he has very reasonable posts. Unless he is a fictional character. Which we will never know with 100% certainty. I am sure quite a few digesters are fictional creations used to spice things up. Possibly even me, but I doubt that. I digress. Only about 2-3% of the 1,000+ of us ever write in anyway. The rest just sit back and wait for news. And wait, and wait and wait........ Might as well talk about something in the mean time. On the subject of the current state of affairs in the music industry. It's a catch 22 situation. These days I turn on the car radio, listen to about 5 minutes and then stick all my old L42 stuff on. If any good stuff gets played (v-rare) I miss it cos the rest is crap. ******************Begging section*************** spare some change for a cuppa guv? John ------------------------------ Subject: FOLLOW ME! From: Mike Payne Date: Tue, 29 Jun 1999 00:02:11 CDT Hello again FRIENDS! GOSH, it has become very HOT now in TEXAS, YIKES! I guess summer is here too stay for a few months! When the Knicks lost to the spurs! (LOL for HOURS) GOOD ONE! I am actually posing a question L42 related, can somebody remember when I last did this? I know Mikey42 asking a question about L42...who would have thought? Q: I know that the track 'Follow Me' was supposed to be the lead track of the next L42 album of that time in 1984-85 as a precursor to what we know as 'World Machine'. Then 'Something About You' was composed and dominated the next feel of the album. Why was 'Follow Me' scrapped off the album as it was a very (I thought) strong leading song, it surely sounded great LIVE? Also, is the studio version (or equivalent title) track in waiting for the re-releases and will it see the light of day with the rest of the Polydor Masters? Can anybody transcribe the lyrics to this tune? And it might be of notice that the EP version of the song is actually a remixed version of the live track on Physical Presence's series.....Winman told me that, I was so distressed to know that the EP version was truly 'not' live! I think had 'Follow Me' been a next single after 'Something About You' it may have charted in the USA along with 'Leaving Me Now'...you guys/gals think so? Just 'thinkin bout' the universe' Mikey42 _______________________________________________________________ Get Free Email and Do More On The Web. Yes, that's true. I have this version on the flip side of the 10" of Something About You. I was all excited about a new recording of the track, until I realized it was simply remixed and edited. ------------------------------ Subject: Unreached Levels From: dean_osborn @ hotmail.com Date: Tue, 29 Jun 1999 00:13:26 PDT Hi all............has anyone heard any more about the unreached levels cd set, after our orders were placed a while back ? dean. It was ordered from Music Boulevard/CD Now. Total cost including shipping was $19 dollars (£12 at todays rates). Not bad considering I know you can order it there for even less now, but even at that price its cheaper than the UK version - ridiculous ! I think some of this has already been reported on the Digest but....The picture on the front is swapped with one on the inner sleave (there are no new pictures) and the text is bolder throughout. The CD itself (as reported already) has a half moon with sparkly bits on it - smart ! In summary the overall feel of the packaging is 'mildly' bolder. I can't notice any difference at all in the recordings - interested to hear if anyone else as spotted any differences - no reason why there should be though. Andy
