Unfortunately I can no longer go, so if you're interested e-mail me (cpw20 @ cam.ac.uk). I'll sell it for 10 quid. I don't think it is such a terrible CD. I know he doesn't have the greatest voice, but a lot of the songs are actually really catchy, and he makes good use of his backup singers. I like Surf and/or Die and Girlfriend. The chorus of the song Girlfriend is especially catchy, IMO. I've changed gauges back & forth over the years, and I've never noticed any relationship between gauge and how fast they go dull. I've never found strings that don't lose that initial spanky brightness within 3 days. So I just shoot for strings which have the sound I want AFTER the break-in period. Ken Smith Rockmasters have been my sting of choice for some time now, although I also enjoy the DR Handmade strings, both Hi-beams and lo-riders. The Ken Smiths are cheaper, and just seem to have that spanky funk sound I like. I got a free set of Warwick strings once, and they were the thinnest sounding strings I ever tried. Anybody else have that experience? BTW, I do boil my strings when they go dead, and that gives them at least another day or so of life. * * * * * Say, what's up with all the name of Mark's record label? Everybody calls is "Eagle Rock", but on the One Man CD and on their website, it's just "Eagle Records". From: Mark Perrella Date: Mon, 18 Jan 1999 17:27:14 -0500 I definitely gotta get in on this thread! :) This is what makes the Digest worthwhile! Our differences are never too far apart when the discussion has to do with Mark and Level 42. It truly get interesting when people express their opinions on non-L42 subjects as we have seen with this one regarding bands like Toto and Chicago. As most of you know, I am also an avid Toto fan. Knowing their personal musical history and following the group over the past twenty years, there is nothing formula or dull with their music. They, like many other long time bands (including L42), go through many different periods where they try different styles or techniques. As others have mentioned, a lot of this has to do with changing personnel as well as the times. At any rate, I truly enjoy the various sounds that have come from Toto over the years. They seem to challenge themselves with each new CD, yet are still able to hold onto the distinguishing characteristics that made me a fan in the first place. This also holds true for my love of Level 42 as well. To me, they are not far apart in their development at all... just two distinct sounds that I enjoy very much! Mark "..... Hold the Line... love isn't always on time....." Jeff Porcaro.... you are sorely missed...may you rest in peace. ------------------------------ Subject: Light as a feather! From: Bill Burnett Date: Mon, 18 Jan 1999 22:58:25 +0000 In message <199901181100.GAA08806 @ worldmachine.com>, Level42 Digest writes > I read the liner notes, instead of gazing >at the singers eyes on the cover of the albums like a teenager. I listen to the music, instead of gazing at the liner notes like the anally retentive muso that I actually am. (and anyway, I only have eyes for the keyboard player out of It Bites). By elements, I mean anything/one that contributes to the finished music, I completely agree with you that in great self contained bands such as L42, Beatles etc. the quality of the work reflects the talent of the band members, I was simply pointing out that great music may be produced in many ways, and that the following talents: (Sinatra/Riddle/Gershwin), can produce just as great a result as say (King/Lindup/Gould*2/Badarou) even if their contributions are seperated by many years & thousands of miles! Thank you for the Donald Fagen info. I have had enough emails to confirm that you are right about there being only two albums & to shame me for not owning them already. >>what does 'PSB rock' mean? > >writing the sentence is a cry for help. Me, I use 30,40,60,80,100,130 gauge (as if anyone, even I, cares) as for type, I don't know what's on my bass right now, I've got Elites, Labella & Steinberger strings and I can't tell one from the next. But I agree with another posting, that the thin ones seem to go dull in a matter of days! I think it may be, as I pop the upper strings more, they are taken beyond their elastic limit more often & loose their original tension faster. exciting stuff eh, folks! I bought a lot of tix from the 'ticketline' (including tix for friends). I got all the tix thru the post except from the Manchester ones. I called them almost daily out of worry, both from work and home. Its a great inconvenience to call from work as it wastes time and clients do not like it! Anyway, 10 days ago they started saying the tickets were sent. They never got here. I called to report my concern, I was very reasonable and explained that I cant keep calling from work. They gave me a number for customer services. I tried the number but ended up waiting for ages, so i called the t/line and asked him to get customer services to call me. They were a little rude, and frankly kept repeating 'we dont do that', 'theres no way we will call you, blah blah blah'. Anyway, i finally got thru to them, again taking up so much work time (cust services only answer in office hours). The response was a little better, 'as far as we are concerned, they were sent out. Nothing can be done till the end of the week...we might be able to arrange something with the venue'. Has this ever happened to anyone? anyway, looks like I'll be going to Manchester without tickets, but fear not, I am sure it'll work out! But Marks' are something special as they play like no Fender you can buy off the rack! - And that is why so many Fenders are crap - they are mass produced rubbish like many guitars now)! If you're lucky and get one when the dude was having a good day - then great! The older ones are better, because the wood ages well and also they were made by skilled craftsmen who CARED. To re-iterate this, I'll use a friends bass as an example. He bought one brand new, and it was a Jazz in Black. It played ok, but it was badly intoned and the action was like telegraph poles. To cut a long story short - it was amazing that a new bass could be so badly setup. To make matters worse, the thing was so badly made, that it was nigh on impossible to get the action real low, due to poor fret work and an offset nut which was also causing problems! > -- he sold his house, a lot of his gear, and >changed basses in the run-up to the release of One Man. >These are key symbolic moves, and go hand in hand with the >sentiments of Changing of theGuard. I agree with that. However, I do feel that much of it was literally because his collection was suge huge and he had nowhere to put it! >Besides, his sound around the time of GUARANTEED got too >tinny by far...!Ben That's another think entirely! I personally feel it was due to the sound engineers feed from Marks' amps! I know he was using two trace gp12v's in a Bi-Amp setup. This in itself is prone to creating a void in the 'mid range'. Also, he tends to go for a boosted bass and top sound, which accentuates a mid range void. It sounds great near the speakers, but not so good recorded! The best bass sounds I think Mark made, were in simple setups, or direct (the Alembics sound great DI'd). - Just listen to the sounds on Guaranteed and FN! - All direct or into a GP12v and into the desk! I like every recording Mark has done, as he always finds new sounds and keeps on doing kewl stuff!
