(F**k it's cold here at tha noo') Firstly, this.... >The Scene : Auditions for the Band......... Any characterisations and events actually taking place in this way would be >a bloody miracle. Eric W....we Aussies say this TOO MUCH at the moment, but here goes....you idiot!! Bloody good read though. >hearing from you... Best wishes.... Steve Welcome aboard Steve....you can lose the shyness and self-corrections, but....no-one here is THAT dangerous. BTW, the parrot sketch reads like this..."the plumage don't enter INTO IT !!"...meaning the plumage is not a valid point of consideration given the circumstance, ie. the dead parrot. O.K. it's late, but I got it in. Cheers... Gaetan asked about recommended Incognito and Brand New Heavies albums. As for BNH, I'd highly recommend "Heavy Rhyme Experience, Vol. 1" (I don't think there was a Volume 2). It's very cool to hear hip hop & rap (positive vibe and gansta-style) done with real drum and bass tracks ("the drummer's real and the bass player's real/the drummer's real and the bass player's real"). And since it is a collection with all different artists with whom BNH is playing, it has a great combination of sonic consistency with musical and thematic diversity. It sounds fresh every time I listen to it. shuf ------------------------------ Subject: Stanley, Lenny and Vertu... From: HAMMOND Paul Date: Thu, 24 Jun 1999 08:22:09 +0100 Hey all, Just wanted to add a little to the talk about fusion and in particular Vertu. [Sits down at Mike's keyboard, starts playing with one finger.] HAHHAHHA! SO typical of The Old Days, having get used to playing with one finger 'coz the keyboards back then only had one-note polyphony!! Poor Wally!! :-) Dan: brilliant audition demo too! I tore my ass apart laughing!!! MORE!!! > Even 80's POP was more talent oriented (Duran Duran) than 90's pop, where a band learns 3 > chords, plays them with lots of distortion, and sings about not having any > money and not caring. SPOT ON RIGHT!!! But don't get me wrong, I am NOT saying that there were NO good bands at all in the 90's, it's just... there were more better music in the 80's than in the 90's, as simple as that. That's what I think. Here's my second addition to the humerous flare that's caught the digest the last couple of days...: Tell- me something why do we always find it hard just to get along try our best - for nothing every little thing we do is flamed Feel it in our brains driving us insane flame after flame the same old thing sons and daughters (don't fall in) in Hot Water sons and daughters (we don't do) what we oughta I know its getting lame but I won't hesitate can't scroll down got to do what I do Tell (tell) you something MUSIC IS THE KEY TO STOP THE FLAMES!!! From: Fiona Klimczak Date: Thu, 24 Jun 1999 09:25:47 +0100 Warning ... Not Level 42 related so if you don't want to read my plea please scroll down. Are there any Digesters out there who would be willing to obtain any of the Star Wars memorabilia that you can get free in kids meals in places like McDonalds, Burger King, KFC, or anything else Star Wars related for that matter? Costs including postage will be happily refunded to you. If you are able to help would you please e-mail me direct rather than replying to the Digest. Many thanks. From: "Hayes, Ken [qual] IE" Date: Thu, 24 Jun 1999 09:52:00 +0100 >Subject: Thomas Dolby >From: "Norman vd Wildenberg" >Can anyone tell me more about Thomas Dolby. >maybe the connection between him and L42? Thomas Dolby was one of the Pioneers of Synth music in the early 80's.His debut album 'The golden age of wireless' is a forgotten classic and it has more then just Synths on it with a lot of usual band ensemble of bass drums +electric guitar fused together to create a very origional sound. He's most famous for his hits 'she blinded me with science' where he took on a mad scientist image(which he later regretted) and 'hyperactive' which has a stunning slap bass line.He later became more known for his production skills and has produced Prefab Sprout and Joni Mitchell and played in David Bowie's backing band for Live Aid. He has had 4 albums but the 1st was definitely the best. He now does music for PC games and is involved in music technology devolopment such as 'Beatnik' which is an innovative internet music program. I don't think there is any link between him and level 42 except to say that he blended synths with a live band feel like L42 ,especially on 'the golden age..', and the use of slap bass on some of his tunes and at some stage particular musicians might have been used by both. (The Level 42 bit..) Q:Is there any studio version of 'Follow Me'.On their live album mark introduces the song as 'a new one' and it seemed they were testing the water for a potential single, but I never heard it on later albums etc. It's a great song with cool lyrics, so what happened ?
