[The story so far: Mark, Phil, Mike, and Boon have successfully auditioned for John Gould's band. The auditions continue.] John : Next! Wally: [waves hello] John : Can I help you? Wally: Erm, yes, I'm looking for the chief inspector. John : The what? Sorry, this is band auditions... Can you play at all? Wally: Well, not as such. [Sits down at Mike's keyboard, starts playing with one finger.] John : Well, the proof is in the pudding. Don't let the door hit you on the way out. Wally: Hey, what's this button do? [Begins programming synthesizer.] John : [checking his watch] Er, yes. Well, that's all the time we have... Wally: [after twenty seconds of twiddling, begins to play again, still with one finger only.] John : [astonished at the incredibly cool synth sound] Well bless my fraternal ass! You're in! "Til I saw you in pieces" ------------------------------ Subject: Hot fun in the summertime From: Gaetan Duperron Date: Wed, 23 Jun 1999 06:27:08 PDT Wow! How lucky are we? New albums from Jamiroquai and Incognito, both released the same week. I thought that I had read someplace that the North American release of "No Time Like the Future" was pushed back to mid-July. Is Canada on a different schedule? It wouldn't be the first time that a European act has released or toured here before doing the states. I can go as far back as The Police, U2 and Tears for Fears. As for before that, sorry... I'm only 27. Perhaps it ties into a point that Cliff made yesterday about his copy of "True Colours". A lot of former-PolyGram CDs sold in Canada are pressed in Germany or Holland, whereas product for the US market is probably pressed domestically. Either way, good for me. My initial reaction to both albums however, is one of slight disappointment. Jamiroquai - "Canned Heat" and "Planet Home" are both great tunes, but most of the remainder really doesn't grab you - either by the throat or the booty. Incognito - "Get Into my Groove" and "It Ain't Easy" are instant favourites, and the one new singer (sounds like Siedah Garrett) is a nice addition, but again, no balls. Anyway, I'll give them both time to grow on me. Now all I want is a new Brand New Heavies record and my summer will be musically complete. In passing, does anybody have any strong recommendations for Incognito (I have: 100 & Rising; Tribes, Vibes & Scribes; Positivity) or Brand New Heavies (Brother Sister; Shelter; Remix Album)? Winston, yup I realize that fusion has never really disappeared, but it seems to have hit something of a low point in recent years. I mean some great musicianship aside, neither the Yellowjackets, nor the Pat Metheny Group and its clones have really done much to move the genre forward. Thank god for groups like Bela Fleck's and Medeski, Martin & Wood. Perhaps fusion isn't quite so dead after all. Commercial viability is a whole other story, but that goes for jazz as a whole. They answered that they will forward my request to the Programm Management department. We'll just have to check the TV guide to see if they honour my request. Maybe if all Dutch and Belgium digesters send a request to Veronica we can put some more pressure on them. The address is : publiek @ veronica.nl. Just ask them to re-broadcast the Rocknights. Scene: Boon and Phil walk into the audition at the same time. John: Gentleman, My name is John and I will be observing your performance today. Just relax and be yourselves. Boon:Fuck off. Phil: Okay, but it is funk and funk only, or you can Fuck off. THEY PLAY John: That was pretty good. Escpecially you, Phil. Boon, I am not knocked flat by you. Boon: Fuck off. Phil: If you want me, you have to take my brother too, or you can Fuck off. John: Okay....but we need something from Boon. Boon, what else can you do? Boon: Fuck off! Phil: Boon can write lyrics John: Really? Boon, do you have any ideas for lyrics? Boon: Fuck off! I have an idea about a man who lost a woman because he was too ambitious and now regrets it. And I have an idea about a man who lost a woman and sees her everywhere he goes in public. And I have an idea about a man who loses a woman and feels bad about it. Also, I am tossing a few ideas around about failed relationships, namely I have an idea about a man who loses a woman. John: Hmmmm. Do you have anything that does not involve regret? Boon: Fuck off. Okay, before people start screaming "DISLOYALTY!" let me say it was a joke :) Greg, you are right about 90's music. There has been some great stuff, but in my opinion it began with the early 90's House and Hip Hop obsessions and that led to a lack of creativity as the standard. "White" music has also failed the origionality tests and only seems to appeal based on a Slacker/retro 70's image rather than music. Even 80's POP was more talent oriented (Duran Duran) than 90's pop, where a band learns 3 chords, plays them with lots of distortion, and sings about not having any money and not caring. Perhaps I am just to old to relate. 90's bands that have actually been good include Nine Inch Nails (but I hate their fans!), Jamiroquai, Beastie Boys, Underworld, and CIBO MATO. Mostly, I listen to 80's music or the 90's stuff from artists who peaked in the 80s. ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Subject: Hot Water in the Digest!! ;) From: cristina gallego Date: Wed, 23 Jun 1999 09:37:55 PDT Following the evolution of some posts during the last days I have decided to add something that applies to the situation. This album always held a special place in my memory. I was in the USAF, stationed in Saudi Arabia at the time the album was released. I purchased a bootleg cassette of the album for 75 cents, from a store called ' 7 4 7'. Bilal knows the place, I'm sure. :-) Man, that album took me thru 6 months in Saudi, and I wore the groove off the tape!! I would sit at work, for 12 hours, and listen to it over and over. As soon as I returned to the USA, i passed the tape onto Alandis, who some of you met at the recent NYC Fest. I'm sure he still has it. SITL and People were my faves I recall. But I thought the album held up well as a whole. Oddly enough, my tape opened with the cut 'Standing In The Light'. Is this just an odd occurence of this bootleg, or did a vinyl version exist with this song as the leadoff? Eric W, mand you have entirely too much time on your hands, to sit down and write that 'story; about Level 42 forming. But i tell ya, I'm glad you do, because i thought it was hilarious!! :-) Well, I'm off to attend a taping of 'The Late Show with David Letterman'. Tonights guest are Richard Belzer (comedian) and Gerri Halliwell. I think she was the spice girl who left. It will be interesting to see her perform. I joined the Digest about two months or so ago and have been enjoying reading all your posts. I live in Vancouver, BC (Canada). The two songs that really got me into Level 42 were "Something About You" and "It's Over" (both have great videos as well!). I have greatly enjoyed their music and have, I believe, all the albums, some re-mix CD's and three videos. I certainly do not have such an extensive collection of Level 42 material as some of the Digesters but am happy with what I've got. Haven't yet been able to obtain a copy of Mark King's "One Man" CD out here. Wonder when it'll be in stores (considering that Virgin Records and HMV - two of the largest record stores - are within walking distance from where I work). Anyways, my reason for my post is to (1) introduce myself; and (2) inquire if someone can let me know where I might find some song lyrics of Level 42 (i.e. lyrics which have not been printed in the album/CD insert). I have found lyrics at times to be quite useful (so that I don't hear something different than what is being sung :-) -- I'm sure you know what I'm talking about ;-) ). Two songs that I am searching for (among others) is "Freedom Someday" and "Follow Me". I quite enjoy both songs and would love to read their lyrics. Another song I am searching for the lyrics on would be for "My Hero". Any help you can offer would be most appreciated. Thank you.
