In fact I'd go so far as to say that they typify the growth and realisation of the bands early songwriting abilities and song creation! True there is some loss of momentum after tracks like Micro Kid going into Out of Sight etc., but I personally think that they albums are quite varied and well structure - in comparison to say Forever Now (not the resurgence issue). I felt that True colours was perhaps a venture into a harder, darker sound that was definitely an avenue the band hadn't been down before. Tracks like True Believers and A Floating Life are personal favourites of mine, which typify the great ability that Level 42 had to create different sound textures and space in their recordings! For instance, Marks bass sounds are phenomenal on there - and much of Phil Goulds drumming is particularly dextrous and subtle! You can clearly hear the Verdine effect on STITL too, as that album is a definite detour from the bands usual sound and way of working, and it is to my understanding that this wasn't entirely welcomed by the band. I certainly wouldn't go as far as saying that there was more or less 'pap' on any of the albums because I value them so dearly! To me, they are a goldmine of sounds and information that simply cannot be categorised in this way. If anyone has a hate for these albums, I would strongly suggest that you try listening to them in a different light - perhaps having a break for a long time (which I did)! They are actually, quite stunning - but I don't think they were ever given the best chance they could have had! ------------------------------ Subject: MP3's for me and thee! From: "Spencer, Paul" Date: Mon, 21 Jun 1999 12:06:56 +0100 (British Summer Time) An excellent suggestion by Cliff in #169 regarding the digest compilations. I would love to listen to some of the digest project CD's and it would be infinitely more convenient in MP3 format. Is there anyone out there who would be willing to encode some of the project CD's?? I would certainly be willing to contribute in the monetary sense for any inconvenience. On the drivel front, is anyone else had to go and see their Doctor about the repetitive strain injury caused by having to scroll down so much lately!!? Is there any recompense for terrible injuries to myself and other well adjusted digesters!!? I think I'll stop there before I invite another episode of pointless personal criticism! :-) Paul.. ---------------------------------------- Paul Spencer Faculty of Applied Science ------------------------------ Subject: One Man / (ATTN JAY TRACY - off topic) From: Cliff.Barua @ ec.gc.ca Date: Mon, 21 Jun 1999 09:05:06 -0400 JJBAZ1: excellent points about "One Man". The length of a CD these days is a huge issue. Unfortunately, too many artists are utilizing 65 or 70 minutes of the CD with about 40 minutes of decent songs and the rest being filler. I think Mark is still of the mind that he would try and have 10-12 "decent" songs. Also, I think "officially" the album is credited to Mark King, but promotional material, such as stickers on the CD wrap, use "Level 42's Mark King" for better name recognition. Just a guess. **WARNING** off-topic response to two posts (that's for you Jay, buddy). I tried to be conciliatory, I thought I was a bit harsh on you, but you went and spoiled it anyway. So take some time off, and go have some sex or whatever little boys at Huh-vahd do. You're an idiot. Mikey 42 wrote about Cher. Just one question: was she discernibly lip-synching "Believe" (as she has done almost anywhere else). I dunno, it just reminds me of the lip-synching on Solid Gold. Surely, she can just sing it straight. But I guess with the over-produced nature of today's music, lip-synching is a must. Good to see Cyndi Lauper is back on the scene. Is this a comeback, or is she a part of the nostalgia/revival scene? John in Buffalo: I resisted before, but congrats on humiliating in the Maple Leafs in the semi-finals. You won fair and square. I was cheering for you guys in the finals. Mikey: Congrats on winning, but Dallas are one of the most boring teams I've ever seen (people in England: they're like Arsenal from a couple of years ago). Maybe now, a big boy like Darien Hatcher can help you with your summer taping of concerts :-). With Andrew on sabbatical for a few days, I just thought I'd give my "one-fifth of a dime." Close inspection reveals Andrews continued use of movie titles for his subject in his postings. Could it be that he's doing a "digest review" as in "movie review." The Level 42 digest is seen as a movie, and Andrew is merely critiquing it as in a movie review, full of wit and insight and video clips via chevrons. If so, great job. If not, well.......... great job. The (media) machine stops, John ------------------------------ Subject: Vertu From: Gaetan Duperron Date: Mon, 21 Jun 1999 06:51:07 PDT Hi all. I haven't noticed it mentioned yet, although I have been speed-reading a lot of the digests lately, but has anybody checked out Stanley Clarke's most recent project? It is called Vertu and includes Lenny White, Rachel Z and Richie Kotzen. This is for RTF fans as well as for those of you who just love Stanley's recent, Alembic-generated sound. I'll admit that I'm not a huge Return To Forever-era fan, but I just loved the Animal Logic project from a few years back - great everything voice, Stanley, Stu Copeland (drool!). Anyway, give it a listen. I think that Columbia may be hoping for a fusion revival, but it ain't gonna happen thru this album. It's still worth a listen though. A work of art. Now I must come to the defense of one of my favorite L42 albums, True Colours. I think that it's their first album to jump from jazz to r&b and use the guitars in the rock tradition more than before. Not to mention I love "Kouyate" because of its tribute to African drum patterns. I wish there was a dub version that just had those drums on them (drums stop, very bad very bad!). I played "My Hero" for a friend and that made him ask "who is this? they are cool." American levellers take note: the US version of TC doesnt have "My Hero" on it. Now, I agree with you guys about the Guaranteed album, it took me several listens to "get it." Same with Forever Now. All I really, really want in life is a live version of Changes, and to hear Mike's next solo project. Mm mm good. A show of hands please: how many of you can tell which L42 members wrote which songs without looking at the credits? "I'm sitting here surrounded by possessions, objects that confront me night & day..." ------------------------------ Subject: My own Private Idaho From: Brian Flint Date: Mon, 21 Jun 1999 09:48:20 PDT I'd like to begin this week's discussion by extending a fig leaf (is that the peace symbol?) to AlienHorse. No more excuses no more explanations from me, just my regret at my behavior. So, moving on to new territory. Jay, relax buddy. Everything, I mean EVERYTHING is a matter of perspective. Your perspective of what's right and good is different from everyone elses. For you to come in and say that we have nothing better to do with our time is ludicrous. It's not like we are so much better off if we had posted something tedious, like "Where's mark playing this week?" We are all (By your definition) wasting our time here. But isn't that what the point of this digest is? Isn't this just plain entertainment? I mean...is anybody actually making a living out of this digest? If they are let me know, I want to jump on board. So Jay, instead of whining about us not being boring, and actually having a bit of fun in a forum that DOESN'T DIRECTLY AFFECT OUR LIVES IN ANY VITAL WAY. I would suggest not being lazy as I suggest again, use the scroll bar. When I last checked, there were no guidelines on subject content. So unless all you "Purists" want to erradicate all of us "Troublemakers" out of the digest, why not just deal with it our ignore it. Look at that last sentence.....what if that were to happen.....reminds me of the Thirties...you know Germany? Level 42 content for the day? Well, Phil Gould is a much better drummer than Gary Husband. Why? Marks bass style already creates a deep, percussive bottom to the groove, Phil Gould was good at accenting those bass lines with light drumming, almost melodic filling. Gary Husband's just a rock drummer. So there. Spaldo, guess how many beers I had over the weekend.....heh heh.... Hey NightFly, Hi Freisen, cheers. I've always said it was impossible for me to decide on which I like best, but I have to say that Something About You is in fact very special to me... I remember the days when I knew nobody else who had heard of L42. I remember playing things like Theme to Margaret, Kansas C/Milkman, Kouyate, 43, I Want Eyes and The Pursuit of Accidents to friends on my Walkman, sure it would impress them but then they would return to listening to fashion/fad type acts. Something About You seemed to change all that, it expanded the audience - thats why its special to me. And as that happened, suddenly the L42 back catalogue seemed to disappear from the shelves of my local record store as people were discovering this 'new'(!) band! Indeed even some of the digest community might never have discovered L42 were it not for Something About You. Its the Sandra Bullock of music(!). Everyone who hears it loves it first time. On top of that, the song is just beautiful - perfection, even the video is brilliant - one of my favourites. Bilal ps I think SAY should have been re-released to promote The Very Best of L42 album. ------------------------------ Subject: Two Questions From: Bkstjohn @ aol.com Date: Mon, 21 Jun 1999 21:05:34 EDT Hey again folks! I have two questions: 1) Is the US version of MK's One Man any different than the import? (Tis a question for the American Audience I guess. . . Although anyone is free to answer!) 2) Does anyone have a copy of Nik Kershaw's "Radio Musicola" for sale on CD? I bought two copies years ago and now have had them *both* stolen! Both from my car, no less. Two different cars in two different cities about 6 years apart. Nonetheless, I am now Radio Musicola-less. If anyone can offer any help I would be very grateful. I have tried the cdconnection.com, cdnow.com, and cdworld.com and numerous other smaller outlets. No dice. Please help if you can! Sorry, should read: "(especially the LD's)" , as in laserdiscs. Cliff, 160kbs MP3's aren't really necessary. They take up much more space than 128kbs and well I can't tell a difference. MP3's are not CD quality so really anything over 128 doesn't gain you much anyway. Check out the latest Audio magazine for a good article on MP3's. They say the same thing. HTH. I figured you can't build a house on a cave, maybe the song was about a guy and a girl who lived in a house on a cave and the whole thing collapsed in... LOL! Stunning tune, you're right Mark, I really am beginning to like Toto tunes. Re: 80's revival????
