Jenny ------------------------------ Subject: A Replacement for Mark King?! From: FortunatoX @ aol.com Date: Sun, 20 Jun 1999 09:42:07 EDT In a message dated 6/20/99 6:01:27 AM Eastern Daylight Time, Level42-request @ worldmachine.com writes: << Who could be possible replacements for Mark King? I would consider: Rick Astley, Debbie Gibson, or Tito Jackson. Cliff Barua - Toronto >> Oh Lord! You cant replace the man! Thats like taking Herb from Peaches and the same! Hmm.. but if you were going to I guess He'd need two replacements, low line voice and bass. Astley does have the voice. As far as bass goes he is irreplaceable in the medium he works with. Some of the old school funk bassists like Bootsy and Graham might be technically better but they play with an intensity that overrides the band. Oh and snag Stanley Jordan while they are at it so they can finally have a real guitarist. (only kidding dont flame me). By the way the Rippingtons are in town tonight and I will be missing it do to prior engagements, sigh . ------------------------------ Subject: One Man at Borders From: DonZipf @ aol.com Date: Sun, 20 Jun 1999 10:17:58 EDT This is to confirm that Borders book stores are carrying ONE MAN. I bought a copy at the Cary, North Carolina store last week. They also seem to be one of the few places which still stocks the Resurgence FN. Someone in their corporate ordering department must be a Level 42 fan. Peace - Z. ------------------------------ Subject: Guaranteed/Forever Now/Dave Allen/Bill Nye From: lawford42 @ juno.com Date: Sun, 20 Jun 1999 12:19:52 -0400 Interesting what Jonathon (FortunatoX @ aol.com) wrote about Guaranteed being a hodgepodge of good songs that didn't go well together. I always felt that it was a very well produced, cohesive album (Overtime and A Kinder Eye are my two favorite tracks BTW). On the other hand, the first thing that struck me about FN was how none of the songs really fit together and it seemed like a collection of leftover tracks rather than a new album. The Resurgence version made steps toward correcting that problem, but it's still the Level 42 album I reach for the least. One a different note, what exactly is the band's connection with the 'Dave Allen at Large' TV show? Did they compose that piece of music (instrumental) that was always played at the beginning and end of each show? I always wanted to get a copy of that. Oddly enough, I heard that track once being played at the end of 'Bill Nye the Science Guy'. I went to record it the next day, but it turned out that they use different music for each episode. Oh well, one of these days it'll turn up... Chris ___________________________________________________________________ Get the Internet just the way you want it. It is a great album to come on the heels of STANDING IN THE LIGHT which is a rather weak album. SITL begins with micro-kid and slows down from there, deteriorating into I WANT EYES and PEOPLE. It picks up at the last track with THE MACHINE STOPS. Like a bread sandwhich, SITL lacks meat. Then TC came out and was listenable AS an album without the pap. ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Subject: How dirty is the underside of Your toilet? From: "Jay Tracy" Date: Sun, 20 Jun 1999 14:04:20 -0400 Gang, >I need a show of hands to see how many people think Nightfly is vicious? OK, >next, how many people think he is humourous? This is just so bloody stupid....as was sort-of hinted at create a new friggin' list, all you bozos can daily post to Nightfly (whom I am never trying to personally crucify, you may be a great guy, you just serve no purpose here with the angle of posts (not too mention the fucking size of them) you create) and he can spew forth "humourous" mails back to you. Giggle giggle, chuckle chuckle...if only I could join! >Now my advice. >If you are the former, don't read his posts. If you are the latter, you know >what to do. Yes, it's quite easy to say scroll down, etc. But it just gets tiring...I have been on many lists, and yes, a great deal of them peopel just get carried away, and I have un-subbed from them, WWW pages have gotten so good, that if you are looking for tour dates, releases, etc. that you can more than likely get them. So that's what I choose to do...w/ this group...(should I be addressing all these paragraphs to you, Cliff? (As you did to me, thinking you're pretty slick) This digest is unique, and I've been around from almost the begining too, Mr. Cliff, has produced neat little trinkets that I really wouldn't want from any other band; several t-shirts, pins, stickers, not too mention the "BobC tapes", and digest produced CDs. I wouldn't want to lose the chance to still donate money and be a part of projects in the future because I do NOT have time to sift through the wallowings of people that have far too much time on their hands (and if you do all this shit at work, I am sincerly happy yo do not work for me!). Am I rather pissed I am taking some of my free time to actually put forth here... > Hey... I don't watch Adam Sandler movies because I don't think he's funny. Situation: You buy a ticket to go see a NON-Sandler movie. Curtains are drawn...on comes a Sandler movie...you reach into your pocket, see that your ticket clearly states "non-Sandler movie", you get up figuring that you may have walked into the wrong showroom, but outside the door, matching your now wrinkled ticket, in bright lights it again states "non-Sandler movie". What do you do? How about emils from said unfunny (I agree w/ you) Sandler every day? From the numerous private emails I've gotten after my post, there are quite a few people that agree with me, they choose not to post about it, maybe not wanting to make waves, or maybe it's really not that big a deal to them. There i a time and a place for everything, this is not the time, nor the place for idiotic rambling. I'm sure there is a alt.fan.idioctic-rambling. group out there just waiting to be created, dear boy, Cliff, go to it, I sense your calling has finally arrived. I am truely sorry for typing this to the digest, it owuld be nice if this situation could be nullified (I am also sorry for all the typos I am too tired to go back and fix (up for 3 days...)). Whatever...jay ------------------------------ Subject: Re: Level42 Digest V99 #170 From: CD32569 @ aol.com Date: Sun, 20 Jun 1999 15:24:46 EDT I like Go West's interpretation of "What You Won't Do for Love" (never thought that I would concur with Nightfly83). Rick Astley is too busy working on his next album, and he is collaborating with a brilliant lyricist and vocalist. If there is one song that would persuade me to learn bass, it is the opening of "It's Not the Same for Us." Au revoir. ------------------------------ Subject: Mike Lindup - Changes From: "LINDSKOG JENNY" Date: Sun, 20 Jun 1999 21:47:23 +0200 I may have asked this question before but I've forgotten the answer anyhow so I might aswell ask again: Does anyone know where (preferrably in Sweden and for a low price) I can get the Changes CD? Jenny ------------------------------ Subject: Mikey P - hockey talk From: EMIKATIE @ aol.com Date: Sun, 20 Jun 1999 21:08:14 EDT Hello Mikey P. and other hockey fans: > OUR DALLAS STARS HAVE WON THE STANLEY CUP!!!!!!!!!! SORRY BUFFALO > MAYBE NEXT All's I can say is, watch the replay and you can see that Hulls skate was clearly in the crease and the goal should not have been allowed. Granted, I really thought the Stars were going to take it all anyway, but I wanted to see a game 7, if for nothing else than to finally see the Sabres play the calibre of hockey they are capable of. They showed none of that in any of the games vs. Dallas. But they sure whipped those Maple Leafs amply. The problem? It's too SHORT! And it's too mature for radio play in the good ol'USA , and it'll never have a studio to back it, and it'll never be heard, and it's really a shame. I want to be wrong, and I hope I am! And "Pamela" has this really cool groove going, and then POOF! the song just ENDS! (I'll bet this song can really groove in a live extended-jam format.) Well, my husband and I will just enjoy it, and listen to all you lucky Euro-types who get to see him perform in clubs in the UK, etc. . . . sigh! Just one question-- since we're in California and don't get to read the Sun or the Mirror or any of the English mags, we aren't in on much of the L42 dish, unless we hear it on-line. How is it that Mark King gets to use the "Level 42" name on his solo CD, even though it's not an L42 project? Over here, there'd be a lawsuit, and someone would have won the right to use the name. Or is there some faint glimmer of hope for a patch-up one day/year in the future??? Does Mark King own the name now, or what? Who knows? And before you get sick of the subject of sports, what racetrack is Mark at on the inside jacket? And what kind of racecar (or better yet, WHOSE?) is he standing by? (See! Sports ARE related to this website!!!!!) ------------------------------ Subject: From: powerfm @ mail.netconnect.com.au Date: Mon, 21 Jun 1999 16:12:49 +1000 Hullo all!! Speaking of which... 1) My average strokes per minute on a rowing machine....42!!! 2) The amount of years' bad luck which the nerd in "Screwballs" cops after his mirror breaking incident....42!!! 3) The number on the wrecked aircraft carrier on the promo poster for Kurt Russell's "Soldier"....42!!! Firstly, glad to see the high interest of people for this year's Levelfest in Dallas, later this September....made my weekend to see so many queries! Well, I just got back from seeing Cher in concert here in Dallas. It was actually a GREAT show, but without my fellow L42 fans/friends and without Mike, Mark, L42, and so....it just wasn;t the same...and before anybody ask, I didn't get a tape video/analog of it! It would not have come out very well anyway too far away! Wild Orchid and Cyndi Lauper opened, with the latter really putting on a GREAT opening setlist. I was actually amazed at how well Cher's voice and stage show, it really was very 'neat' and her voice was polished, good job! Not bad for the $60 and the $7.50 Coors Light x 2! See ya! I get the feeling that you might be out of the listening area, but I strongly suggest you listen to 1170 AM in the High Wycombe area on Tuesday nights between 7 & 10. The programme is dedicated to the 80s with a guaranteed play of a L42 track every night...I should know, I'm the DJ. For the record, the live version of Mr Pink is the best L42 recording...ever Cheers, Morts ************************************************************************* Any opinions expressed in this email are those of the individual and not necessarily the company.
