If you're gonna insult us, please don't call us compatriots in that tone of voice. I personally know some people farther away than North America like, say, Australia, and I think they have a chuckle or guffaw, but not nearly as hearty a laugh as Greenlanders. However, as a big D'Arby AND INXS fan, I think he'd be the PERFECT selection as a replacement lead singer, if they decided to go on. I think he's one of the most underappreciated singer/songwriters of the 80's/90's. I'd LOVE to see that. I thought Hutchence was awesome, too, but I don't put many people up on a pedestal, including anyone from Level 42. They're only human after all. :D >Does anyone have an idea where I might find a copy of Mike Lindup's >"Three Words" single. >I've seemed to have lost my copy during moving (boo-hoo). You will need RealPlayerG2 to hear the songs and there is a link to follow so that you can download it if you do not have it. the files contain the whole songs so it may take a little while to download the file into a temp folder but it is worth the wait. The main attraction is the Phil Gould track 'The Road Less Travelled' from the album 'A Certain kind of Freedom' so, if you want to hear this and some other cool stuff go to this URL and while you are there, take the time to fill in the guest book on the first page and leave me your comments. I also heard that Terence Trent D' Arby is >collaborating with the remaining INXS ...what a poor substitute .... I disagree entirely. D'Arby is one of the most underrated artists of the past 10 years. He has equal parts Prince, James Brown, and Al Green. He has all the arrogance and strut of Hutchence, the only difference being that Hutchence was a rocking-brooder and D'Arby is a soulful-brooder. And while Michael's voice was not something to write off, D'Arby is a force to be reckoned with. I saw him live 2 years ago in a club setting and the man nearly tore the walls down, blew the roof, and left only the doors standing...just to prove he could. > my >opininon is that INXS should disband rather than letting someone like D' >Arby sit on a rather bejewelled throne left behind by Mike H. Please let me >know your views if any. I would think that they would change or adjust the name in the line up change (I heard they had already returned to the use of their previous name - Farriss Brothers). I think the pairing is a good one actually, and would be interested in seeing what happens. As many of you already know, I am also a devout Toto fan (right Carl and Laurel? :) and "Taken It Back" from their first 'album' is pretty much my favorite Toto song to date, even after hearing their new material from the "Mindfields" CD. BTW, Bobby Kimball is back doing lead singing once more for the band... it's great to hear his unique vocal sound again! But I digress... back to Charl's comments... I would be happy to put together a sampler tape of Toto songs for you and I think you will find their music a great supplement to the L42 sound you already enjoy! My email address is markp @ albany.net . Side note for jazz lovers: I just picked up the new Rippingtons CD called 'Topaz' and it is sweet! The prevailing theme is a Southwestern/Spanish flair with lots of great acoustic guitar licks from Russ Freeman and excellent sax grooves provided by solo artist Paul Taylor. A must have CD for any Ripps fan! Mark ".....Cause I'm Takin It Back where it all began. The house on the cape, the place on the sand. I'd take it all back if it just make you understand. ...." ------------------------------ Subject: Thunderball From: Nightfly83 @ aol.com Date: Sat, 19 Jun 1999 15:48:44 EDT I think my favourite Level 42 track is probably Foundation & Empire Parts 1 & 2. I first heard it when I was about 14 and I thought it was great. Some of that bass playing is so fast! And the keyboards are good and so is the guitar playing, and the drumming is really great too. Most of you probably don't know that it is named after a book. AG PS I'm just off now to prepare a ludicrous, ill-informed rant about Peter Cox, so that the next couple of days' Digests can become transformed into The Defence of Go West Daily. ------------------------------ Subject: The Chant / INXS From: Cliff.Barua @ ec.gc.ca Date: Sat, 19 Jun 1999 18:47:25 -0400 Sage advice from Lolita (via Rodney King), but my favourite CNN soundbite is still "I did not have sex with that woman ... Miss Lewinsky". OK, Dave "Mocked" my criticism of "The Chant Has Begun". It's probably not _the_ worst Level 42 song, but I just find it annoying. Any Aussies like to comment on TTD's performance as lead singer of INXS at the opening of Stadium Australia last weekend. I saw a clip of it, but the newsman was talking over it. Though I'm only a casual INXS fan, they should have formed a new band with a new name, with TTD as the lead singer. Anytime you keep the old name, you are bound to offend the masses who followed the group before (especially when the singer was as charismatic as Michael H - just ask fans of Van Halen). Who could be possible replacements for Mark King? I would consider: Rick Astley, Debbie Gibson, or Tito Jackson. Cliff Barua - Toronto ------------------------------ Subject: Cliff of Pickering/"Furious Flaming" From: alienhorse @ uswest.net Date: Sat, 19 Jun 1999 17:34:57 -0700 Greetings Cliff and Level 42 Digest, Firstly, I'd like to state that I enjoy this Digest, for the most part. The petty bickering is what I am not fond of although I understand that a slight against one person deserves at least the right of rebuttal from the person slighted, wronged or in disagreeance. Regarding this Digest being "relatively free of furious flaming of other members...due to the efficient management of Eric Hanson", I must state that My message of defense countering the ridiculous and out of bounds comments that Wolfbard(Brian Flint) made in his rant of a posting against My name because of a privately mailed message, completely in JEST, I sent him in reply to one of his Digest postings, was submitted, received and NOT posted! Yes, Mr. Flint posted an apology (after sending another belligerent message to Me privately after he'd received the message of defense and explanation of My initial message to him that I'd also sent into the Digest for posting). My point is that perhaps the members of this Digest are more polite and better behaved than on other lists (damn, I hope that is not true), BUT, if a member does a "furious flame" on another member and it succeeds at being posted, I think it only fair that the 'flamed' member be given the opportunity to defend &/or explain herself/himself!!! And by the by, My message was not all 'f-ck's and 'assh-le's, etc.. Ken Hayes has apologized, also has Brian Flint. I do not know whether Gaetton Duperron sought correction or not but I did and My request was not granted. "Efficient management"?... a mistake?... Pickering is like Hamilton is Toronto. 'The Chant Has Begun': terrific political, free thinking, in favour of citizens awakening to & rising up against their greedy & hypocritical political Masters, type lyrics! Who is writing libertarian, socialist, environmentally aware political lyrics nowadays?! Paul Kelly, Archie Roach, Baaba Maal, some rap and 'world' music artists... If you're not into drumming, fine, but let's at least give Mr. P. Gould his warranted due! I agree with the posting about 'Hours By The Window', yet another demonstration of Phil Gould's writing genius and also Mark King's ability of non-slap playing and terrifically smooth singing. This piece is emotional and thoughtfully orchestrated from all ends. Sincerely, Karla Tillers alienhorse @ uswest.net ------------------------------ Subject: Dumb Newbie Question Bout Forever Now From: FortunatoX @ aol.com Date: Sat, 19 Jun 1999 22:28:03 EDT Hi Y'all from the Smokies! Just couple of questions Im hoping someone can help me with. I may have missed it in the archives. Ill first say that after playing Forever Now two times it bacme my favorite L42 alblum, a wonderful suprise after Guaranteed (I diddnt want my money back on that one, but it was not a single unit, just sort of a hodge podge of songs that were essentially good but did not go well together. ) Anyways, I think that Love In A Peaceful World was released a single in Brittain. Was there a video? IS there any way to get this video? OR failing that are there any videos from FN? Thanks! Jonathon "in these alien years" ------------------------------ Subject: OOP Videos -> DVD? From: Brian Date: Sat, 19 Jun 1999 22:26:02 -0500 Does anyone know if any of the out of print videos (especially the DVD's) will ever be released on DVD? I've seen her mentioned here quite a bit so thought I'd ask - is a Lisa Stansfield sealed laserdisc worth anything? Brian ------------------------------ Subject: Digestives From: J Shuford Date: Sun, 20 Jun 1999 00:47:51 -0700 (PDT) MicroKids: Two paltry items I thought worth sharing. They're not likely to spark new threads, but perhaps they'll help balance out tomorrow's Digest with some relatively positive things (which it seems we've needed of late). First, I replaced my old receiver a while back, finally upgrading to surround sound. Because i have dsp on both my cd player and receiver now, it really enhances CDs (I know, I know, cut out the techie jargon!). The first CD i checked out was Donald Fagen's "Kamakiriad," and it was truly amazing what a difference it made. Then i checked out "One Man." I suddenly had an all new understanding of what Mark was up to in the mixing, tonal quality, and choice of recording style on that CD. Second, while perusing Circuit City the other day, I found myself in a strange place (for me) these days -- checking out CD singles. I was fortunate that I did, because I found a brand new copy of Brand New Heavies's "Brother Sister" CD for $2.99. It's not as cool as "Heavy Rhyme Experience" (though few things are), but a bit of good fortune nonetheless! Alas, Level 42 has been reduced to "Level Best" and "Live at Wembley," and they're not carrying "One Man." ------------------------------ Subject: True Colours From: J Shuford Date: Sun, 20 Jun 1999 01:06:14 -0700 (PDT) A few people have written about "True Colours" recently. That was the album I picked up first after "World Machine" and "Running in the Family," and it's always been one of my L42 favorites. It is their darkest album (a more mature continuation of what they doing in "eyes waterfalling," and "i want eyes"). I would have liked a bit more of this from them in their later years. I think "Man" and "Staring at the Sun" fit into this mould, but nothing else they did really fits this pattern. "hours by the window" has long been one of my favorite songs -- the bass is terrific. i've always really liked "kansas city milkman," "true believers," "kouyate," and "a floating life," and in time i gained a real appreciation for "seven days." i'd have to say that my least favorite songs are "the chant has begun" and "my hero." however, "the chant..." is a much better live track. anyway, underrated and underappreciated album all the way around! but now, what is this... "BTW: The 'Dave Allen At Large' version of 'True Believers' lets in more of the funky background keys than in the album version. I wish they'd kept 'em." is this a mix of "true believers," or is the song "dave allen at large" a different/earlier version of "true believers" (like the way "mother nature" is the original lyrical version of what became "to be with you again"?) answers on a postcard please. i'd like to know what you believe... shuf ------------------------------ Subject: DALLAS/FT WORTH From: Mike Payne Date: Sun, 20 Jun 1999 04:14:37 CDT Hello Friends: FIRSTLY, I WOULD LIKE TO SAY: OUR DALLAS STARS HAVE WON THE STANLEY CUP!!!!!!!!!!
