BASS TALK - Scroll down if not interested!! Bert W asked about Marks choice of strings these days. As far as I know, he is still using 30,50,70,90 gauge, but these are now Elites. I presume they are Nickel, as I haven't seen any Stainless Steel ones around (but then not many people buy them). If you want to know my opinions on these, visit my web site! There are so many bass players on this digest, I'm sure it could be quite interesting to know what their personal preferences are! IS it me, or do light gauge strings only stay bright for bit?! - Seriously, I do wonder if they are meant to last more than a week?!!!! - Let me know if you think otherwise! - They sound pretty kewl though! Go on Eagle records with the next single release more >formats. Yes, it would be very nice to see Eagle Rock release the next single on the four formats that you've listed but somehow I very much doubt that they will. See, both the 7" and 12" format have all but died, though some non dance groups such as Oasis still release singles on 12". We must remember that Eagle Rock are a small operation (I hadn't heard of them before MK signed with them) and so probably cannot afford to produce quantity's of a single on vinyl as well as CD and cassette. In fact they probably never have done before (if anyone knows better then I stand corrected) so why should they do it now? Face it, CD and cassette are the 2 formats that most of the record companies release on - supply and demand and all that. Personally I'd love to see a 12" single of Mark released but I'll eat my L42 12" collection (numbering nearly 100) if I see one!!! What I would like to see is Eagle Rock releasing 2 CD singles. One with the single and some NEW B-sides and the other to contain the single plus some live tracks from his tour (which would be nice). I have to agree that I too prefer Love Wars or even One Man over Changing the Guard to be the next single. Is Changing the Guard at the top of the most voted songs from One Man on MK's website I wonder??? Week to go to the shows!!! As for the next single. From a sales point of view, I think it should have been 'one Man' this would have been a hit in the clubs and could have realistically charted, giving following singles a greater chance of charting on the back of it's success. I'm just looking forward to an edited version of Changing The Guard and some unreleased B-sides. >what does 'PSB rock' mean? writing the sentence is a cry for help. Well, it would depend who was on farts, I would prefer Phil to Gary. And how about Wally Badarou on the underarm fart? It's funny you should say that, as one of my favorite songs begins with Marks private parts trapped in a slowly tightening vice (Beezer One). Like, I dunno, how about that really crap Walter Becker album from about five years back? Not really related to L42 in any way, but I just wanted to share a new discovery of mine with you guys: Los Amigos Invisibles. I just picked up the album and then saw them on "Sessions.." last night. Holy sh*#!!! They're like... Jamiroquai, Groove Collective, Red Hot Chilli Peppers and a really hot merengue band rolled into one. If you can overlook the fact that they look like the Venezuelan version of Take That, there is a lot of great, funky music here, with the emphasis on guitar (FUUUUUNK!) and great drumming and percussion. The got slagged by the Village Voice in their "worst of '98" list, but I'm having a hard time understanding why. They seem great to me. Enjoy! From: HighwayHamster @ webtv.net (Glen Hambly) Date: Sun, 17 Jan 1999 10:57:10 -0600 (CST) Greetings fellow Levelfans I was strolling through Sears in my local mall here in Nashville yesterday, just about to leave the store when some familiar strains coming from the muzak speaker caught my ear. I stopped to listen and couldn't believe I was actually hearing what was clearly coming through the air: a muzak version of "Love in a Peaceful World". I just stood there like an idiot with my mouth hanging open until my wife pulled me toward the door. Amazing! I mean, it's seldom we hear any Level 42 recordings on the air here in the States, let alone hear a MUZAK version of one of their songs which wasn't even released as a single (not in this country anyway). There must be a Levelhead working at Muzak central USA! ------------------------------ Subject: Lighten up Guys! Music is a product of a great >many elements, and whether those elements all happen to be in the same >band or not is about as relevent as forks. So that means that the Beatles were nobody until Ol' Blue Eyes did his version of their hit "A Hard Day's Night". So it wasn't Jeff Pocaro, Mike Pocaro, Steve Lukather, David Paich & Marty Paich (wrote, arranged and produced) and God forbid, played their own instruments (oh, I understand, you're a Spice Girls fan, you wanker! I like Mel B too!), Toto's success it's owed to another element other than talent. The same for Level 42, as per you it wasn't the talent of Boon, Gould, Lindup, King & 'the fifth Beatle' Badarou but of a strange element. What do you mean by 'element'? Their fervent use of SSL boards, outboard gear (Yamaha, Trace, etc)? It does matter that they wrote, arranged & produced and also played their own instruments (you're a Milli Vanilli fan also, don't get me wrong I liked their songs but it wasn't their 'element') it shows not only their musical ability but also their talent. They also have much more control over their own material and to present it to the public the way they intend it. Most Levelheads would agree that the best material from L42 was the early Albums with the members mentioned above. I read the liner notes, instead of gazing at the singers eyes on the cover of the albums like a teenager. Frankie was good during his time, when it was unheard of an artist producing his own work,(until Buddy Holly came along). To me, Sinatra, is ok. He was a 'poser' (please don't tell me that you also like Michael Bolton, another rip-off artist) with a nice voice. On a lighter note, Donald Fagen has only to studio albums out (please correct me if I'm wrong) The Nightfly ('82) composed and arranged by him (except for Ruby Baby) record on 3M digital 32 track and 4 track here in NYC. And Kamakiriad ('93) record here in NYC most likely using an SSL board, produced by Walter Becker. I also recommend Aja, Pretzel Logic and Gaucho from Steely Dan. >Subject: Re: Level42 Digest V99 #14 >From: Nightfly83 @ aol.com >Date: Sat, 16 Jan 1999 04:39:57 EST > Subject: The Glove One vs. Blue Eyes > From: "MSFH62" > > >Well only if you consider Machael Jackson to be similar to Frank > >Sinatra. > > Well, I prefer Michael (not Machael) over Frankie anytime. Absolutely fantastic. L42/MK link? Well, it has parallels with One Man in that it's a long-awaited album from very talented musicians, is funky, and has excellent songs on board. Also produced by W&L with a guy called Tchad Blake... who recorded Tony Levin's recent album with Jerry Marotta and Steve Gorn (In the Caves of the Iron Mountain). Tony is, of course, one of the best bassists in the world. A tenuous couple of links, but I just wanted to share them with you. You should buy this album. 'Tis even better than their other three releases. WENDY & LISA, FRUIT AT THE BOTTOM and EROICA. And Loz, come now -- more inflammatory remarks re music! I think The Human League are pretty fine actually... Ta ta! PS Fender basses are excellent, IMHO, esp. old ones. Those Alembics were albatrosses round Mark's neck -- he sold his house, a lot of his gear, and changed basses in the run-up to the release of One Man. These are key symbolic moves, and go hand in hand with the sentiments of Changing of the Guard. Besides, his sound around the time of GUARANTEED got too tinny by far...! It's not a crime to slag off a favourite artist. Not for the first time, Cliff speaks uncommonly good sense. I have always thought that an undying love of everything a given artist produces betrays a refusal to open the mind. Which in turn renders the die-hard fan less able to distinguish the work of real merit. Were I a performing artist, I can't think of anything more depressing than have someone tell me they love everything I've ever done. I'd far sooner have discerning fans who want to separate the wheat from the chaff. Apart from which, who amongst us loves our kith and kin in every minor detail? We love them in spite of their foibles. In the end, we kind of love them because of their foibles. > Surely Andrew Goodwin must have something he dislikes about a Steely Dan or > related project?? Ah, that's more like it. Actually, I greatly upset the administrator of the Steely Dan Digest by submitting to the review contest an essay expressing what a tepid, uninspired album Alive In America was. Although I don't know whether he was more upset at the review, or the fact that more people voted for it than any of the pusillanimous, sycophantic fawnings that prompted it. > Subject: Re: Level42 Digest V99 #12 > From: Bill Burnett > > I see lots of ref to Donald Fagen, could any fans recommend to me what I > should check out. It is a really good issue giving retrospective into the last ten years of thier magazine. But, Mark King is one of the best known Bass players in the world and even in BP's 10th anniversary edition, no quotes from him, no nothing. Kind of disappointing. With all of the attention he is getting in Europe, wether it is in "Bassist", and I guess he is on the cover of "Bassics" this month(anybody know anything about this??) Not to mention touring on NOTP. I think if BP got thier head out of thier ass, and quite ranting and raving about Les Claypool, and Flea,(they are good bass players) all of the time, they would take the time to do a story on Mark King. That open a door for him and "One Man" to come to the states. Grant it, it is a long shot and all but you never know. I just wrote the editor, Richard Johnston, and asked him why they have ignored Mark and his new album. Maybe a few more letters from some Levelheads would help the cause. his email is: rjohnston @ mfi.com or you can go to http://www.bassplayer.com live it up! regards, Mark Harter mdharter @ yahoo.com I w _________________________________________________________ DO YOU YAHOO!?
