OK, next, how many people think he is humourous? Now my advice. If you are the former, don't read his posts. If you are the latter, you know what to do. Hey..... I don't watch Adam Sandler movies because I don't think he's funny. The machine stops, John ps: my biggest complaint about Nightfly is the "movie title" subjects he's using. I'm sure there is a common thread he's weaving, but movie fans bigger than myself will have to figure it out. ------------------------------ Subject: The Flames 42 Digest From: alex.friesen @ sickkids.on.ca Date: Fri, 18 Jun 1999 09:09:51 -0400 Note: this is not a personal attack, he just happened to be in the line of fire. >From: "Hayes, Ken [qual] IE" > >Andrew Goodwin >who has been causing a lot of trouble > Now Ken, I know you're not the only one on this anti-Nightfly kick, but I couldn't hold off any longer. I cannot take criticism seriously if there is no supporting evidence. To say simply the somebody "has been causing a lot of trouble" doesn't really hold much water unless you can back it up with explicit supporting examples. >My mail was written in a rage > The classic heart versus mind conflict. Many of us have fired off a flame in the heat of emotion. I am pretty sure, however, that Nightfly puts some thought into every submission. Assuming a football supporter is capable of thought. >He seems to be the type who sits back and lets someone say >something before jumping on them and sarcastically tearing apart >their views. > I disagree with you on this statement. Does that mean I'm "tearing apart" your views? No. It simply means that my opinion differs. Granted, I could express my disagreement in various ways, and I'm sure that some people are shocked to read this, as it doesn't fit my standard sarcastic pattern. The only view-tearing that Nightfly does is on a level which is clearly meant to be taken as humour. He stated this up front when he rejoined the 'gest recently. (Of course, I'll be fire-bombing his house late one night in retaliation for some of his remarks about me. But that's just my style.) For practice in warming up to brutal humour, try (depending on your country etc.) Black Adder, This Hour Has 22 Minutes, or The Awful Truth. >never actually giving anything of himself, > Now now, he did give us a True Colours review just a couple of days ago. And many of his posts (the ones not lambasting myself) are filled with wee insights into his character. He gives more than many, I believe, just in a slightly different manner. So Ken, this isn't a personal attack on you, I'm just using your text to broadly state my opinion. That, and Nightfly might start doing his grammar corrections again, and then we'd really be in trouble. ...Alex... Because this is a true Digest (as opposed to other Digests which are a daily compendium of singular messages), people respond the next day to yesterday's postings. This generally prevents off-topic threads from gathering much steam (because people aren't responding to one post after another). Having been a member of several lists (several music ones, MiniDisc, and of course my beloved West Ham United Football Club, London E13), I can assure you that this Digest is relatively free of both off-topic drivel and furious flaming of other members. And that is due to the efficient management of Eric Hansen and the good-nature of most Digest members. This is by far, the best and nicest mailing list I've been a part of. Big welcome to Peter Meech - hope you enjoy your stay. And to Ken Hayes: don't to be too upset with Mr Goodwin. While in the above paragraph, I compliment the merits of this Digest to no end, it is my opinion that Level 42 fans are generally a nerdy, overly-serious, overly sensitive bunch (just read some of my posts!! :-) ). Andrew provides some welcome release, using e-mail to lighten people up. I feel it is safe to say that Andrew does not have a malicious bone in his body. The extention on your e-mail address suggests that you are from Ireland. This surprised me as I thought that your proximity to England would be grounds for "getting" Andrew's humour (unlike most of my compatriots in North America). Level 42 stuff: I know that the topic of MP3's and "illegal" recordings is a contentious area, but since some recordings and Digest compilations are unlikely to see the light of day, and because it is a lot of work for those individuals who burn the CD's, how about offering up (by private e-mail if necessary) certain "rarer" songs (anything on Unsurpassed Levels, live recordings, demos) on zipped 160 kbps MP3 files. The recipient could then copy it him/herself to his/her selected medium (CD-R, MD, tape) or listen to it from their hard drive. Would this not be easier or more efficient than trying to co-ordinate a mass CD burn for the Digest? And by strictly doing it by e-mail, there would be no "illegal webpage" and the exchange would only between those who have no ethical qualm about such files. Let the people speak ..... Cliff Barua - Toronto ------------------------------ Subject: More True Colours, Song Trilogy From: Joey Vela Date: Fri, 18 Jun 1999 10:59:31 -0500 Hello All, I concur with most of the comments regarding True Colours, except Cliff B's take on "The Chant Has Begun". I happen to really like that song. However, I'm surprised that no one has mentioned "Hours By the Window". That is one of my all-time L42 songs. It is so beautiful! Mark King gets plenty of credit for being a master of slap, but this song shows his mastery of finger style, texture, and melody, very much like "Dune Tune". How about this song trilogy? "Seven Years", "A Kinder Eye", and "She Can't Help Herself" from Guaranteed, the first two featuring blistering solos by Allan Holdsworth. I know many of you don't favor Guaranteed, but it is still quite a good album, and these songs are as good as any L42 has ever recorded IMHO. Joey Vela ------------------------------ Subject: Nathan King, 80's revival, Toto, TLF '99 From: "Charl Mocke" Date: Fri, 18 Jun 1999 18:24:22 +0200 Hi there everyone, What's all this with Mark's brother, Nathan King. I see he played with the One Man band? Guitar? Which Level songs did he play? He looks like a mean type of guy.? I am really in favour of any 80's revival. The 80's was definately THE Music decade. Also, times in general were also very good then. The Good Ol' Eighties. And I also have just read that Rick Astley, that well-known icon of synthpop of the 80's, is making a comeback with a new album set to release soon, produced by Pete Watermann. Will the sound be the same as the Stock/Aitken/Watermann productions of the 80's? Some (many!) people slag it off, but I like that sound and I hope it would at least have some SAW influence. Also, anyone ever notice any similarities between Level 42 and Toto's music? I listened to a stunning song called "Takin' It Back" last night and it sounds so close to some Level 42 songs. I don't really know many other Toto songs, BUT if there are quite a few Toto tunes that are like L42 tunes, this is a band I would really like to get into (albeit an old band... but hey, L42 is old as well, and that makes no difference!!). Mr Zenn wrote: > "I have just gotten a copy of MKs One Man disk, and will be giving my own review of what I hear (probably a tired thread, but whats a guy to do?)" Well, Zenn, typically one could always restart some popular previous flares, like one of the following well-known flaming hot "Is...?" occurences in our beloved Digest's historical past: * Sure Ways To Wind Up The Digest: Using the Four primary band members. * 1.) Picking on the little people is not constructive as it doesn't challenge you to reach higher goals, come on I know you can do better than that. Okay for all you freaks that absolutely have to have your L42 content or you'll die: "Hey isn't Level 42 a great band? That bassist isn't too bad. I like Level 42, do you? Who here likes Level 42? Re Cliff Barua's comments in the Friday Digest about 'The Chant Has Begun:' I don't think it's close to the worst single L42 has put out, but its not up there with the majority of 'World Machine.' The main problem I have with 'The Chant' is the melody, especially in its bass line. It's clunky and doesn't blend well. The lyrics are OK (and were especially appropriate in '89 and '90, with all the barriers in Eastern Europe coming down). And I can't get out of my mind the promo vid with those dancers (egad!). Actually, 'The Ape' is the only L42 song that truly gives me the creeps -- makes Mike and Mark sound like they're second-rate game hunters. Too bad. It wastes a jamming vamp by the always-impeccable Gary Husband. With that said, 'True Colours' is still an enjoyable L42 album -- 'punk soul' I call it -- and set the stage for the great breakthrough the following year. BTW: The 'Dave Allen At Large' version of 'True Believers' lets in more of the funky background keys than in the album version. I wish they'd kept 'em.
