I've been on this group off an on (now back on after a 6 month off-ness) for about 3.5 years now. My fondest hello to everyone (especially Marc DuPuis, who I still owe a latest sample of sounds from my bizarre cd repository). I have just gotten a copy of MKs One Man disk, and will be giving my own review of what I hear (probably a tired thread, but whats a guy to do?) mr. zenn ------------------------------ Subject: True Colours From: Cliff.Barua @ ec.gc.ca Date: Thu, 17 Jun 1999 09:31:14 -0400 Now that I've calmed down (perhaps I was bit harsh on good ol' Jay, but I was pleasantly surprised to hear from some "new" people on the Digest the past couple of weeks, who may now retreat back to their homes, afraid to state anything irrelevant), I'll have a go at True Colours (since Andrew was kind enough to stay "on-topic"). To me, "The Chant Has Begun" is such utter crap, that I rate it as the worst song by the band (yes, even worse than "The Ape" and "The Chinese Way" - notice all these songs begin with "The" :-) ). However, I'm not sure that any other Level 42 album has such a brilliant trilogy of songs such as Hot Water, Kansas City Milkman and True Believers (other than World Machine - which is almost completely flawless IMHO). The Level 42 album comes close with "Love Games", "Starchild" and maybe "Almost There". Off-topic, yes, but did any North Americans see Jennifer Lopez on the Blockbuster Awards last night. I don't think she can really sing at all, but I _just don't care_. And best of all, my wife is completely supportive of my fascination with her (unlike when I was going through my Toni Braxton phase). OK, it's best that I go and lie down now .... CB ------------------------------ Subject: Truly Colouring Nathan Inuit From: alex.friesen @ sickkids.on.ca Date: Thu, 17 Jun 1999 10:29:31 -0400 My take on the Nathan King thing. The guy seems like a very competent player, and I was impressed with him on the One Man tour. However, he didn't exactly shine with his own light, did he? He pretty much copied Boon's lines exactly. He did it very well, mind you, but he didn't display any originality that I could detect. So would I buy his vaporware album? Yeah, probably. But only if Steve Robson liked it. ********** >From: Brian Flint >is Inuit a place..... > "Inuit" is pronounced "in-you-it". Go ahead, try it. This one's a percussionfest as well. >the weedy Seven Days; > That one goes beautifully with Kouyate. My oh-so-deep interpretation is as follows: Soldier is in a war killing strangers. He meets one, a babe named Kouyate, and falls in love with her, but is ultimately involved in her destruction. Then, later, he is overwhelmed by "the memory of her tender touch" from their Seven Day fling. He has kept his illicit love a secret, and yearns for a time when wars and prejudice will not prevent him from openly demonstrating his love. Aw gee. From: alienhorse @ uswest.net Date: Thu, 17 Jun 1999 09:22:03 -0700 Greetings Everyone,
Since Victor Wooten has been mentioned a couple times during
the last two days I thought I'd mention this year's W.O.M.A.D.
(u.s.a.) festival which he (they) played at, during their own tour,
last Summer.
Is anyone at the list going to attend this year's W.O.M.A.D.(u.s.a.)
festival in Redmond (Seattle), Washington, U.S.A.?
Bela Fleck & The Flecktones were one of the many terrific bands from
around the globe that performed. Victor and co. played a set as long as
their headlining gig sets!
It lasts for three days; the last two days of July and first day of August.
It's WELL worth the $20.oo/per day ticket fee especially since the
shows are non-stop at three stages, the performers are legendary
and there's plenty of things to participate in, witness or purchase for
12 hours a day, three days running!!!
I don't like the fact that the U.S. now has it's own W.O.M.A.D.,
but I do appreciate the fact that Peter Gabriel and co.want to
educate North Americans on music other than pop, rock, blues,
country, hip-hop, funk, raggae and jazz (and their offshoots).
'World' music performers need every bit of assistance with
exposure and sales as they can get in North America!!!
Mr. Gabriel's 'Realworld' label gets a bit of a boost from it as
well, of course...
Summer is the only time to visit Seattle unless you are a
snowboarder or skier (but then it would be Whistler, British
Columbia, anyway), or, unless you like constant grey skies.
The weather will be beautiful at this time of year in the Pacific
NorthWest.
Anyhow, I do hope that some of you, at least those located
in Western Canada and United States will make a point
to attend.
If you're at all interested in 'world' music and arts, you will
NOT regret this!
Surely 'Realworld''s web site has further information on this.
I do not know if Bela Fleck And The Flecktones will perform
again at this year's festival, let's hope...
Sincerely,
Karla Tillers

Take a chill (Okay everyone, stop cutting and pasting my previous comments and then calling me a hypocrite okay?) sports aint all that bad. I'm sure Mark King et Al were very fond of sports, well maybe most of them. Can't you see MK out on the Soccer field bumping around with his buddys. Football for you Euro's or is it Futbol. At any rate it's hockey on grass with a big ball and no sticks or pads (Big ass goal too) I digress. And what about Darts Ken? Surely you wouldn't mind talking a little L42 whilst downing a Stout and throwing some darts would you? As with Billiards.....but I think the one of the most enlightening conversations I 've ever had about Level 42 was at a hockey game. (Oh yeah, another "celebrity l42 fan) What's her real name? The one That played Winnie on the wonder years. I digress. Ken, See that little bar on the right hand side of your window , it's new technology, it allows you to quickly skip over the crap you DON"T want to read. Please use it, but don't abuse it. And if you don't change, well, I promise to visit you in the looney bin after you freak out because the priest at your church (Or whatever his title might be) talked about a visit with his family over the week. "AHHHHHH WHAT THE HELL DOES THAT HAVE TO DO WITH RELIGION...........STOP WASTING OUR TIME!!!!!!!!" Ok onward.... Hi CB, your next......scared heh heh.......actually. I'm giving my full and unadulterated props (Yo Yo) to CB for de cloneing this Digest. Imagine if we walked around everyday just saying toi eachother "L42...good band ugh" because we weren't allowed to talk about anything else. Everything has to do with everything. And for you purist who think otherwise......get a clue. Places like this is where friendships are forged, enemies are honed, and wits are challenged. Cheers to you CB, I raise my beverage of High alchoholic content to you in praise. And then there's the NightFly. Nice token l42 comment. Are we supposed to believe you are some reformed digester. Did you go to the Betty Ford Clinic of News Groups or something? I don't buy it....tomorrow we will see the same accusative, demoralizing tone in your "voice" and frankly..... I DON'T IT ONE LITTLE BIT YOUNG MAN, you better shape up or I have some friends which will shape you up for you. Ever hear of the Memphis Mafia? Well this is worse.....These guys are known as The Physical Presence. They are mean....real mean.....they take little toothpicks and cause pain you wouldn't believe. They make a prostate exam look like pleasure. Oh yes NightFly, watch yourself, because I can assure you, you are being watched. Hi Mr. Freisen, is everything going well? I feel I must add my name to those people annoyed by someone that feels the need to try to make some witty comment to everything that's been said in the digest, every day. I don't expect everything we talk about have the number 42 in it, but some digests do have 'off-topic' sort-of related digests, kind of like the ILF digest, so that the regular feature isn't cluttered up with useless banter. I've been communicating with Mica Wickersham at Alembic recently. Just for fun, I sent her a pic of the last of Mark's basses for sale at the Bass Centre. It's the maple Series I (which looks suspiciously like the one in the "It's Over" video), which no-one seems to like. Everyone who went there with Morgan last year says this one didn't sound so hot, and even the Bass Centre admits it needs some work. Here's what Mica had to say about it: > That is an OLD bass. He bought it used when he was touring with Level 42. > I believe it is the only Alembic bass he owned that was not specifically > made for him. It's a nice piece of BEM [bird's-eye maple], BTW. From: "Hayes, Ken [qual] IE" Date: Fri, 18 Jun 1999 10:15:00 +0100 Yesterday I made a misdirected attack on Gaeton Duperron and I'd like to apologise to him for this. His name was included in between a very long posting that was actually sent by Andrew Goodwin and I mistakingly thought that the comments directed at me, were written by him. I'm really sorry to him for my mistake and I hope he accepts my apology. My mail was written in a rage and should have been directed at 'The Nightfly' or Andrew Goodwin, who has been causing a lot of trouble and upset recently on the Digest, and I think he should lay off a bit. He seems to be the type who sits back and lets someone say something before jumping on them and sarcastily tearing apart their views. This probably suits him as it means never actually giving anything of himself, but commenting on other peoples opinions.Check his postings out. He never puts anything forward he just makes snide remarks on other peoples thoughts. To end I'll apologise again for my childish attack on Gaeton, and any retort he wants to post against me on the digest would be totally deserved. Yours Sincerly, Ken.
