Lolita ------------------------------ Subject: A galactic pile of doo-doo From: Matthew Blackmon Organization: The Lightcraft Studio Date: Tue, 15 Jun 1999 07:48:50 -0500 > PS. I've heard that the new Star Wars movie is a "pile of doo-doo". > Anybody care to comment? I'll field this one. . . (Note: no spoilers here.) TPM is a totally different breed of critter from the other SW movies. While ANH (Star Wars: A New Hope) felt like a complete story, TPM has the feel of a part of a larger whole. Furthermore, those going into TPM expecting a seat-of-the-pants action movie will be sorely dissapointed. TPM aspires to the same epic proportions as it's first (second) trilogy counterpart, but falls short of the mark. Having said that, I really enjoyed the movie. If you can manage to treat the movie as an entity separate from the original three, and can get past the less-than hair-raising plot, you will enjoy it. For me, the technical aspect of the movie was almost as great as seeing a new Star Wars flick. My greatest criticism of the movie is the dreadfully inadequate character development of the Sith. Did anyone else feel like Darth Maul was a "Red Shirt"? Another criticismI have with it is the de-mystification of the Jedi- minus two points, poor form. M ------------------------------ Subject: Level 42 on Radio 1 ! From: Tom Brown Date: Tue, 15 Jun 1999 15:28:07 +0000 Hi folks, Bet that got your attention. I thought somebody else would have mentioned this, but I must have been the only one listening to Radio 1 on Friday afternoon. Apologies to those from overseas who will now wonder what I am babbling about...... In the Mark and Lard show, you're probably aware of the "cheerfully chart challenge" (something like that), this is where they suggest a subject and listeners are invited to phone in with ideas for related songs. The subject suggested on Friday was the story that Michael Hutchence was alledgedly haunting the INXS gigs. To cut a long story short there were various suggestions and one of them was......... "Return Of The Handsome Rugged Man" Level 42 So there you have it...... Level 42 on Radio 1 !!! From: "Hayes, Ken [qual] IE" Date: Tue, 15 Jun 1999 16:23:00 +0100 In issue 162 Brian Flint wrote " If I offended anybody please send me an email telling me to go F myself" In issue 165 he responds when someone did just that with.... ".... just grow up. It's okay to make fun of me. But don't waste my time and insult my intelligence by telling me to go F myself." Hmmm... -------------------------------------- Karla wrote inissue 162 " Actually, where would, even, 'Something About You' have been without Lindup's contributions!!!???!!!" I must agree with what she said about Mike in the digest and was surprised that no-one else jumped to his defence. I think what Mike added to the band was a sense of class and style. Mark strikes me as being a bit of a lad and can be a bit crude (in an endearing schoolboy type of way) and Mike has a more reserved tone and is trained in classical music which are two very backrounds in music which when merged gave a great sound.(e.g. the harmonies) I can remember been in awe of the album version of 'Leaving me now' which had that beautiful extended ending with the piano on its own which struck me as being very classy for what was essentially a pop album.Mike used technology but never let it take over completly and knew when to keep it simple. The orchestration on 'love in a peaceful world' is superb, and I'm sure Mike could make a living writing scores alone. I think 'One Man' could do with Mikes touch on some of the tracks. I feel that a song should take you off somewhere using lyrics ,imagery, and sounds, but a lot of 'One Man' doesen't move me beyond the studio door. Take care of yourself... Norman, I know you folks from the lowlands are fantastic at English (on a recent business trip to Belgium - oh, I'm cosmopoiltan me - I asked a colleague how to say "I speak no Flemish, do you speak English?" He told me and said "The answer will always be yes", so I reckon that makes me fluent in Flemish) but explain this to me: you're asking Dutch digesters about (I presume) a Dutch TV programme - did it not strike you that this message would go nicely in, well, Dutch? Don't submit to American linguistic hegemony Norman! Stand up for your history and your culture and your wonderful scary language! I'm guessing now - I don't have any specialist knowledge here - but I'd hazard that the answer is this: It's a long, long way. AG ------------------------------ Subject: Mark King/Leather/Mike Lindup From: Brian Flint Date: Tue, 15 Jun 1999 15:32:51 PDT Greeetings fellow freaks, Mr. Freisen, I have my eye on you, I've been warned. Anyway, After spending the weekend and last night listening to my new Mark King CD a few things come to mind. Listen to the chord progressions.....I think we already know who the MAIN influence on level 42's music was. Not taking anything away from good ol Mike-Buddy. Not only am I a bassist, but I'm also a Keyboardist....I like his work, but let's not fool ourselves. As for Mike not having much influence himself. I agree with the person who said that you take away Mike and you lose a lot of content. That's agreeable. I also agree with ALienHorse (IF you can't believe I said that, print this page for a hard copy.) Mike has a certain style of singing and a unique keyboard style that would make the music significantly different. But, It's clear that Mark was the Brain Child for most of the music. Secondly, One Man is a great CD for another reason. As much as I love listening to Mark play like a Crack-Baby given a four string, it's refreshing to hear him play some truly flowing music. Maybe that's not a proper term. It's lighter, thought provoking. Finally, "Nice reference to Brass Knives in the response to playing bass while singing." I don't know why I quoted myself, oh well better to give myself credit. Hey, that was me.....heh heh Ciao Brian (Can you believe I didn't insult anyone?) _______________________________________________________________ Get Free Email and Do More On The Web. Oh yeah, AG, isn't it about time you upset a few peeps with another brilliant "ugly bird at a pop concert story", my man, you can do no wrong at the moment, so go for the big one! One final question (or gratuitous plug- whichever).... If Nathan King released a solo album and sold it over the net, would we buy it, or would he be better off getting a job with a nice steady wage? thoughts or comments?? Enough. From: ALBERT42 @ aol.com Date: Wed, 16 Jun 1999 02:09:37 EDT Greetings, No, I didn't see Mark himself at Border's but I did see his CD. : ) They only had one copy and it was in the back of the shelf so I yanked it out and put it in the front. I'm was glad to read Paul's account of the store owner selling a lot of them. Maybe it will do well here. What I'm wondering is, has anyone heard any airplay? Or, for that matter, has Bitter Moon or any of the other tracks been released as singles? Well, that is about it for now. I think I'll e-mail VH1 and see if they have any plans of showing the special that he did back last year and if they are going to play the Bitter Moon video. I'll let you guys know if I hear anything. Who knows, maybe they will answer me this time. I'm not holding my breath though. In the mean time, I've found -out a little more about the Karlsberg ComPop and have already decided NOT to go -after all. On the 25th of July, Mark King will be playing in Saarbruecken -together with Alan Parsons, Patricia Kaas, Roger Hodgson and a symphonic -orchestra consisting of 75 musicians. A solo trumpet player named Ole Edvard -Antorsen is also playing. This info was taken from the Karlsberg brewery -website. Well this guy is called Ole Edvard Antonsen!! he was also playing with the King at NOTP, and also I can tell you he's solo-trumpettist of a Danish Symphonic Orchestra. He is playing great!!!
