From: Gaetan Duperron Date: Fri, 11 Jun 1999 05:29:12 PDT GODDAMN YOU ANDREW GOODWIN!!! Two more days were all I needed!!! The virtual, L42 digest-related lobotomy that I was undergoing was nearly complete. By Saturday, I would have been able to read and ignorantly, blissfully enjoy digests containing only posts relating to upcoming Level-fests/conventions/round-ups (let's all just call them Level-gaggles, alright?), and moronic requests for song lyrics from people who obviously have no idea how to use the internet. You've ruined a month of perfectly good making-myself-stupider. Welcome back. I hope that your skin is a little thicker now too. GD p.s. I officially choose this moment to out myself too. Yes, I'm Canadian. Now I'll also use the digest to proclaim this as often as is annoying. AG, this means that rather than being "presidentially" named, I'm prime-ministerially named. I have always appreciated that the band incorporated elements of science fiction into many of their pieces, be it instrumentals like Foundation and Empire, or the lyrics of Starchild. I suppose "The Machine Stops" this the most direct being taken entriely from a story by that person who wrote "And Ladies of the Club" and whose name escapes me (I keep wanting to saw Sommerset Mauham even though I know that is wrong but I am a creature of id so there). I digress. What i was curious about is if Eyes Waterfallig is taken from a SF story, at least in part. To me it seems plausible that it is based on "Flow My Tears, The Policeman Said" by Phillip K Dick, but I am uncertain on this. Has anyone got the dope on that song or the information along these lines? -Jonathon "in these alien years" "transmit and receive" PS If you like flat out drop down kick @$s bass you have got to check out the new Graham Central Station CD, GCS2000. I did think that you would be marrying Loz though (based on your immense Level 42 collections). I'd hate to be the lawyer that presided over that pre-nuptial agreement, though!! This Nik Kershaw thing has really opened a can of worms. Even though I heard a bit more of him whenever I was over in England in the 80's, here in Canada, we only ever heard "Wouldn't It Be Good". Unfortunately, he would be viewed much the same way as Level 42 (and many other 80's artists) are viewed by the unknowing (though Level 42 had quite a large following here in Canada) - a one-hit wonder. And full credit to Nate Leopold, who inexplicably welcomed Andrew Goodwyn back to the Digest with a simple "Welcome back" (no digs at him or nothing). How do you do it?? And a bit off-topic, but I'd recommend the new "Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me" movie. I saw it the other day at a special preview, and it was hillarious. What will it be called in England, where "shagged" is not exactly considered to be the Queen's English?? Odd that he should have played like he isn't aware of the digest. He recorded a message for us that was played during our first official big gathering in Las Vegas about two years ago. He knows about us. What a fantastic day for you though! > Also I noticed Ken Hayes note about Mark on Kershaw's > The Riddle. Well if memory serves me correctly he also Yes, but the track was actually called "Easy" (oops, I guess that's already been corrected). Anyway, it's a fantastic track and the bass is very obvious (especially compared to the very simple bass-lines on the rest of the album). I hope they have plans to re-release Radio Musicola which is a better album, IMHO. And for Seattle fans, I found quite a few copies of the US Release of One Man at Silver Platters last night (for $15.85). I opted to buy some cheesy movies on DVD instead however, but I'll get around to it. I have no doubt that Soundwaves in Burien (a store run by a huge Level 42 fan) will have several copies as well. ------------------------------ Subject: Nik Kershaw ...Latest in... I hope I didn't offend anyone too much as this was not my intention.Thank you to all of you who corrected me, (in several different languages). On the subject of the album track, I was going from memory and I didn't have the album on hand to verify the song title . I must admit that I'm a fan of Nik's music and he is a great songwriter, it's just that when I saw him on T.V. introducing his band the way I said, it put me off him as a person. I don't know if you've seen the footage which I think was of him in Japan but I thought what said about his band was really nasty.I've been in bands and I know how it feel when a bigheaded singer blames the band publicly for some hitch in a gig. I don't know , maybe he was just joking and I took it up wrong but that's why when I read a comment by him in a magazine I took it up in way that I percieved his personality to be.If he really is a nice guy I stand humbly corrected. At least it got a lot of you to send a post to what was the biggest posting I've seen since I subscribed to the digest. This is just what the digest if for, to give people a different perspective on different matters and correct them when they're wrong. I might have gotten a bit carried away with my mail , but I'm new to the digest and I'll consider things a bit more before posting in future. If he comes to my town I'll promise to go and see his gig and check out his new album. All the best, Ken. P.S. I'm sorry JohnRGab, but you missed the point with Mr Adams books - they're not to be read like scientific papers, yielding information. They're meant to be read as entertainment, mostly so due to his choices of idioms and trains-of-thought, and not so much for the actual content. (Just like for instance, our very own (glad to have you back) Gandroo Allwyn (NiceGuy83) ;-)). On the other hand, if you can get hold of it I do recommend a cd-rom multimedia production called Last Chance to See featuring Douglas Adams reading hours and hours of travel notes and recollections. Two tracks which stand out for me are the title track Official Secrets and Keep it to yourself. Koyaanisqatsi is an amazing film with an equally amazing soundtrack. Philip Glass, minimalist, you know the score.
