I had a really freaky day yesterday. I was going out for a bite to eat with a mate of mine last night and I got off outside Macari's, the music shop on Charing Cross Road, London. For those of you who don't know, this is where Mark King apparently used to work for a time. I crossed the road and who should I bump in to - none other than MIKE LINDUP ! I remarked about this strange coincidence to Mike and he reckoned the shop where it is now might not be the original store location. However, we had a short chat and in a round about way I asked him about the future of the band and he never ruled it out completely but there evidently needs to be a lot more discussion before anything happens. Stranger still, I said goodbye and walked to a Chinese restaurant for a bite to eat - I entered and sitting down is none other than Level 42's old manager, Paul Crockford ! - bizarre or what !! The chance of that happening has to be a million to one ! I mentioned about the Digest to Paul and he appeared to be unaware of it and said he would try and check it out. Don't get too excited - he HAS been talking to the band about a reformation !! BUT, at the moment Mark wants to do his own thing. I asked him to try and arrange even just a one - off special for the millennium - it was worth a try at any rate ! He did confirm Gary Husband's forthcoming appearance with Mark in November at the Jazz Cafe, so at least half the band will be there !! I'm hoping they might play "Heaven in my hands". Also I noticed Ken Hayes note about Mark on Kershaw's The Riddle. Well if memory serves me correctly he also played on Midge Ure's "The Gift". I was hoping to see Mark play at the gig Midge did in about 1985 at the Hammersmith Odeon, but they had another musician playing the bass then. Look after yourselves.... I'm on the same Level 42 mailing list that you are, I'm also on a Nik Kershaw list as well as a Paul Kelly list. You are wrong on three accounts. 1) Mark King played bass on the Nik Kershaw release 'The Riddle' on the track titled 'Easy' in 1984, NOT the track you stated, 'Save The Whale'. 2) Nik Kershaw recently released a BRILLIANT studio pop album titled '15 Minutes' on Pyramid/Rhino Records and is touring medium sized venues and large music festivals throughout the U.K. and Europe as I type this! 3) I disagree with your opinions of Nik Kershaw being a "git" or a "loser", as you stated in your posting. Mr. Kershaw is known for being very humble and modest about his work. Mark King and Nik Kershaw are still friends to this day, as far as I am aware, and admire eachothers' work. In the situation you brought up in your posting regarding Mark calling Nik to invite him to form a new band after Level 42 split, My idea is that Nik Kershaw probably felt inadequate to be in a band with Mark "Best Bassist In The World" King! Whether you're meaning the break-up of the TRUE Level 42 in 1987 or the break-up of Mark King and Mike Lindup's later various incarnations of Level 42 in 1994, it matters not. Nik Kershaw was never as huge as Level 42 when it came to international sales and celebrity status, although, he did have large success in the U.K. and Europe and a cult fan base in North America. Also, perhaps he wondered why Mark King would ask him to join a band where he would be put into the background (knowing Mr. King's personality). Nik Kershaw is a great lyricist and singer and a very good guitarist, bassist, keyboard player, and composer, BUT, Mark King is a terrific bassist and composer and also a good singer and lyricist who is used to working with other great/very good and 'up to snuff' musicians that do not mind being in the background. Considering Nik Kershaw's very lengthy 'timeout' with international success (from 1985 to 1999), he most probably (and understandably, i f so) felt out of practice and perhaps even, out of league for play with Mr. King at the time of this interview/article you mention. ...At least give it a thought... From: Cliff.Barua @ ec.gc.ca Date: Thu, 10 Jun 1999 09:21:14 -0400 I was going to wait until this weekend to see the "Phantom Menace", but it has mysteriously appeared in my in-box this morning. Let me be the first to offer you a "Canadian" welcome back, Mr Goodwin. Actually, I have no identity. I am a Canadian citizen, English born of Indian parents. In India, they consider me a "foreigner". In England, I'm an "Aaaay-zhaan". And in Canada, despite my Canadian accent, people will usually identify me by my brown skin (I can be officially Canadian if I win a Nobel Prize, a Grammy or an Olympic gold medal :-)). So, I'm a member of the Level 42 Universe, which is fine by me!! Andrew, I thought you would return by talking about something relevant like Mark's thumb tape, the opening chords of "Almost There" or that rare home demo of Wally singing "Wannabe", but no, you go on about Robbie flaming Williams. No wonder you were banished from the Digest. Actually, he was on a radio interview here a couple of months back, and I found him quite funny (in a smarmy git, Liam Gallagher sort of way). He had personality, something which comes out in most Mark King interviews (except that Mark is universally likeable). I think this is what is lacking in North American singers - a complete lack of "something to say". Robbie's North American release is titled "The Ego Has Landed", which is him taking the piss on himself. Maybe Mark's album should be titled One (I'm not with that band anymore) Man. Sorry for the lack of Level 42 content, but really now, what is there to discuss about the band right now. Mark played on the track 'Easy' from Nik kershaw's lp 'The Riddle' at Nik's request. 2. I think Nik saying 'I Don't know why mark contacted me' was meant to say that he possibly thought there were more talented guitarost's available. I really don't think it was a slap at Mark. I always got the impression from interviews with both Nik and Mark that they have a good friendship, and respect each other's work immensely. 3. Nik's band intro in the eighties was purely a joke, and the joke was on him. 4. Nik just released an EXCELLENT album titled '15 minutes', which sadly is on Eagle records. He is currently on tour as well. Also a big welcome back to AG....again! Make up your mind already! :-) p.s. Got the tape, but have yet to listen to it. "One thing about dance music, well if you can call it dance music, one thing that really makes me go grrrrrr is the current state of r 'n' b. What really annoys me is that every Puff Daddy record and every American black r'n'b artist's record can't survive without an old sample in there. It's like 'What are you going to use next?' I even heard the other day that Puff Daddy is going to be using a Dire Straights sample, that really offended me. Now they are treading on hallowed ground using Dire Straights loops. I'm just waiting for him to use a Nik Kershaw loop and I'm gonna fly to America and personally kill him. " "If you could assemble your ultimate eighties supergroup, who would you have in it? It would have to be Phil Oakey from the Human League on vocals. On keyboards I'd say it would be Jellybean, both producing and playing keyboard. On drums it would be Phil Gould from Level 42 and on bass I would be Nik Kershaw cos he was seriously good on bass but not a lot of people know that. Boy, there are plenty of things wrong with this post. . . 1) Nik Kershaw is probably another person, I think you meant Nik Kershaw. 2) Mark King played on "Easy" on The RIddle. 3) There is no song called "The Whale" on the Riddle. There is, however a song called "Save the Whale" (Which Mark King is not cited as having played). 4) Deciding in what context Nik (I'll assume) meant his statements is pretty difficult when you read it in print. Anyone who has been interviewed knows the feeling of having something you said turn out ghastly. You assume he meant the things (if he said them at all) to be snotty and you are certainly entitled to that opinion. I really appreciate the fact that you said it was your opinion and didn't make an assertion. I would hope he wouldn't have that attitude, but I don't know him personnally. And to comment upon his live appearances: At least the Brits have had an opportunity to see Nik live! I would love the opportunity!!! Has he ever played live in the states? Worth 1999 From: Mike Payne Date: Thu, 10 Jun 1999 12:58:24 CDT Hello again FRIENDS, WOW, already such a GREAT response from people for this fall's fest in Dallas/Ft. Worth. Some questions that I keep getting is: "What is the cheapest way I can do this?" Well, firstly AIRFARE.........American, Southwest, and Delta Airlines have a large presence here in the DFW area. Your best fares will probably be offered by eithere American and Southwest, that is if you fly domestic. A good fare to DFW and/or Dallas Love Field from mainly anywhere in the USA (based on a 21 Day Advance notice) is going to be between US$200.00 to US$300.00, with those cities in adjacent states (i.e. Oklahoma, Colorado, Arkansas, Louisiana) a bit lower than that. If you are travelling from Europe YOU WILL WANT TO FLY AMERICAN from a 'gateway' city in Euprope as they offer non-stop service to DFW Int'l and fares are very good. Int'l travel needs to buy their ticket with a 90 day advance, and you are looking at a fare of under GBP 275.00, again depending on what European city you are departing. I know that American offers non-stop serice from Frankfurt, Paris, London, Glasgow, Birmingham, Manchester, Milan, Stockholm and Madrid. Again, to add to what Sean Green posted yesterday, we need to gain a good estimate of those who MAY be coming. I am very happy to see the interest so far and hope that it continues to rise! As far as currency exchange goes: See digest in Jan 1999 for my lectures on how and when to do this. Hotels: You won't really need one here, unless you really want to stay in one, as the room is plenty. If you need a hotel room let me or Sean know and we would be happy to find cost for you! Some airfare packages from Europe will contain a hotel stay, you might want to check to see if the fare that you purchase comes with a room or gives you a discount with a specific chain. "What if I want to stay longer that 3 days if I am travelling from so far away?".........Well, Sean and myself, I am sure, will do all in our power to make sure that your time here in Texas is exciting and full of things to do. And if need be, can reccommend other areas in the USA/Texas to see and do! Well, I hope that helps! Does anybody own a Hohner Jack bass? I'm hankering after a cheap headless for no particular reason and Jacks are the most affordable headless basses (?). Do they play OK? Also, when I lived in Leeds I used to frequent second-hand shops which sold many instruments. I remember this weird bass they had in the window for a while - it was part headless bass part Chapman stick from what I can vaguely remember. It had no fretboard to speak of, but it did have a neck and frets - it was called something like "The Rail" - ring any bells with anyone? BTW, check out this site for slap bass stuff and a long list of good slap bass tabs: http://httpsrv.ocs.drexel.edu/undergrad/st963m9z/SlapYak/ Regards Nigel "...friends all over the world, none in this country but all over the world" - Tony Hancock, The Radio Ham http://www.ncl.ac.uk/~nnac/ ------------------------------ Subject: Anxiety From: "Allwyn & Laura Kelly" Date: Thu, 10 Jun 1999 13:31:50 -0600 Started to read the last few digests today. This is an amazing coincidence, because actually I just bumped into Nik Kershaw in my local pub. I asked him "Nik, why do you spell your name like that?" He replied "Because I'm a dikhead." All Nik Kershaw backlash to be directed to Ken Hayes please. > Subject: Brass boys > From: Birdnig @ aol.com > > I had played, in particular, the trumpet since the age of four and went onto > attain nationally recognised awards. How did you think he came up with the name 'Nightfly' - (it's just a teenage fetish he never grew out of, he's even been featured on 'Crimewatch' ). And to cap it all, he mentions my beloved Wolves on the digest.... that is well below the belt, sir... I throw down my gauntlet and I challenge you to a willy sword fight at dawn....1st blow wins....hold on...I meant a duel with pistols....sorry, thinking of something else....;-) Anyway, if you survive, nice to see you out of the shadows....welcome back ! Just like to say that Mike Lindup's new book called 'Mike Lindup's Guide to Stage Choreography for the Deaf' is amazing. I'd recommend it as a worthy companion to the 'Definitive Biography' and 'Word Machine'. In Chapter One - I learned how to put my hand's out as though I'm looking from a bridge as per 'Silence'. Chapter Two - contains the infamous actions to turning off the light in 'Hot Water' and then waiting those vital three seconds before the light actually goes out. I think his light must have some techno time delaying device on it. Chapter Three - shows us how to deliberately get notes wrong on the outplay of 'Leaving Me Now', and, then to look to see if anyone noticed. Chapter Four - This section has more advanced words and choreography, all synchronised into one image-making scene that is 'Lessons in Love'. Just jiggle your arm about...that's a wave you know, and then you vigorously swim to the shore. I can't think why it didn't catch on at the time ! Mr Lindup is to Level 42 what Jed was to Howard Jones. Chapter Five - A section on looking disappointed. In this chapter, Mike examines overtly mouthing simple lyrics to the crowd, usually to 'The Sun Goes Down'. Now the art to this piece of stage craft is to look completely pissed off when the crowd still get the words wrong after all his hard work. You start off in front of a mirror acting like a fish, mouthing the word 'Bob', then progress onto mouthing ' is it a false emotion...' and onward to dismissively swaying your head from side to side..thinking to yourself "what a thick load of crap we've got in tonight". Chapter Six - This is the final chapter and all the skills learnt in the previous chapters are put together for one last swaree. Now, for this last piece of choreography, you must have pinpoint accuracy, lots of energy, and no qualms about what you look like in front of thousands of people. First, you need a feed line. Whenever you hear the words 'Come on Down' , without thinking you spring out of your trap onto centre stage. You then proceed to hop and clap at the same time, shouting 'yeah' at odd intervals not taking any notice of the music. You must make a b-line for other musicians, craftily avoiding them and make it as far away from your instrument as you can. You then just realise that its about 60 yards away to your keyboards and you're due to tickle the ivories in about 2 seconds. Now the art is to make out that you meant to do this, even after you've broke the World Record 60 yard dash. Again the timing is important. The art of this piece is to miss at least 3 seconds of your keyboard playing time. Anything remotely professional won't do. And to finish, as discussed in Chapter Three, look around to see if anyone noticed. And then.... Relax. ;-) Eric W ------------------------------ Subject: He's Back! From: "Nate Leopold" Date: Thu, 10 Jun 1999 21:54:55 -0400 One of my favorite reasons for reading the Digest is back. The Nightfly has returned! Cheers! Nate ------------------------------ Subject: Rarities / Douglas Adams From: JohnRGab @ aol.com Date: Thu, 10 Jun 1999 22:08:17 EDT Does everyone agree that Freedom and Freedom A Go-Go from Thunderthumbs is a rarity? If so, then how is it that Boon's 1986 single Head Full Of Shadows not in that group? Its a solid tune and Boon was still with the band at the time. Or do I have the date wrong? I vote we put it in the Level 42 rarity group to put it at 12 tracks, bumbing the total running time to just over 70 minutes. Years ago I read Hitchhikers when I found Level 42 took their name from the books. Pretty funny. It was like reading the scripts from half a dozen Monty Python skits. With all the talk lately about 42, I decided to finish the next two. What a waste of time. The only question the author answers in all three books is 42, and that was the only question he didn't no how to ask. Doug never got around to finishing a point, because for each plot complication he created there where 42 side-tracks he had to explore, and for each side-track there was a side-of-the-road to stop at and smell the flowers, and for each odorous side-of-the-road there was a 42 foot drop-off over which he pitched all his conclusions to be smashed beyond recognition on the 42 jagged rocks below. Glad I borrowed them.
