From: "Hayes, Ken [qual] IE" Date: Fri, 28 May 1999 11:35:00 +0100 Hi there,my name is Ken and I am a new recruit. I've been a fan since the release of 'World Machine'. The pop perfection of 'Something about you' and 'leaving me now' was pure ear candy to me, and I began back tracking to earlier days.I've never seen them live, since they rarely came to Ireland and was too young at the time they lived in Dublin to travel from Cork to see them.I feel 'Forever now' was one of their best albums that was sadly overlooked by the media probably because of the not so great previous album. If Jamimorquoi had released some of the songs that were on that album they would have gone to no.1 I reckon.I play bass (thanks mark) and a guitar a bit in a band.Good musicianship seems to be dissapearing from the charts and music seems to be reducing in complication almost to being a single note repeated, which is sad I think. I met Paul Crockford once and the fan club secretary. I went to Pauls office in london and just rang the bell. They let me in and I got to look around Pauls office at the gold Discs and pictures on the wall. Pauls secretary had just got married and the band had gone to the wedding and she was there and let me look at the pictures that had been taken that day with Mark and Mike in Morning gear.Weird! Anyway, see you later, Ken. ------------------------------ Subject: From: "David Jacobs (Server 1)" Date: Fri, 28 May 1999 11:34:53 +0100 Hi there! Jenny mentioned the French and Saunders sketch featuring Mark King. For those of you that haven't seen this, it was a sketch about a guy playing guitar from one of those books that claim to be 100% accurate, and it wasn't. The book was written by Ralph McTell (I assume you know who he is)?! Because he couldn't play the tunes, he imagined a court case where the book was scrutinised and each author of the tunes was asked to perform, and then to play exactly what was written from the book. Consequently, they all failed - except Ralph McTell! Gary Moore does 'Parisiene Walkways...', Gilmour does 'Another Brick..', Knopfler does his usual stuff, and MK does 'Lessons in Love'. He goes down a storm and acts the comedian as per usual, and they say "Now play from the book" - so he starts off, but it is working! - So the judge says "No the book, Mr King". Upon realising his mistake, he proceeds to sight read from the book, and the look on his face is hilarious! - The book is rubbish! Special guests included Mark King, Mark Knopfler, Lemmy, Gary Moore and David Gilmour. At the end, they all do a 12 bar blues - and MK is doing the bass! - It is tremendous, you can clearly hear the Cocobola Alembic singing away, and together the band sounds amazing! Lemmys bass work is just a fury of distortion though, but apart from that it is very good - and quite funny! Obviously Ralph McTell is a Famous Folk Musician, and why they put Mark King on there defies logic (who would buy a guitar book for Bass Lines) - but anyway, the joke was still funny! Best regards Dave ------------------------------ Subject: Re: Level42 Digestion From: BHConrad @ aol.com Date: Fri, 28 May 1999 08:31:16 EDT <I'm sorry this is a bit off topic but....how many of you have interests in the railroad..trains? Lenny produced her new album. This is the actress from A Different World who played Freddie, the ditsy roommate. Her connection to Lenny is that his ex-wife Lisa Bonet starred in that show for a bit. Anyway, I didn't know she could sing - I have to check that out. ------------------------------ Subject: New York, New York... I later realised that this was a Comedy show with Jennifer Saunders and Dawn French! Has anyone else seen this? I think Mark Knopfler was there too. Jenny Hi Jenny The French and Saunders sketch you mentioned was a real hoot. The regular band on the show - Raw Sex - were asking all sorts of famous guitarists if they could play Ralph McTell numbers. I think he writes guitarist books for beginners and I'm reliably informed that he had a corny hit "Streets of London". Of course they all played great guitar lines and then couldn't read from his books saying that they were too complicated. The line up included Brian May, Gary Moore, Mark Knopfler, the guy from Pink Floyd and Mark as well as a few others. I don't know how they managed to get so many stars but it was a good sketch. Cheers Helen ------------------------------ Subject: trains, thumbs and French & Saunders. I for one can't stand trains, I particularly can't stand any that cross the road I happen to be driving on. However, I will concede their phenomenal contribution to the lyricists art, due to their vast capacity for metaphorical imagery, and social/historical impact. >Subject: Mark King on British TV?? >From: "LINDSKOG JENNY" >Date: Thu, 27 May 1999 18:04:54 +0200 > >I suddenly remembered that a couple of years ago, I watched tv and switched >channels and all of a sudden Mark King popped up and played bass in court! >I later realised that this was a Comedy show with Jennifer Saunders and Dawn >French! >Has anyone else seen this? They then proceeded to wheel out a series of celebs to prove that they couldn't play their own tunes from it. I remember Mark King doing Lessons In Love, Mark Knopfler, Dave Gilmour, Gary Moore & Lemmy (who had the best line about not being able to play without the dots, insisting "I'm A Professional"). Ahh, joyous memories from the days when MK was our leather trousered superstar, and French & Saunders were funny. Love - bill. You know, I am an L42 fan, but my husband is the one who is totally gonzo-- though, I mind you, I am the one who does all of the treasure trove hunting for the CD's, videos, etc.] in this house. Nevertheless, he's a transported Brit-- has lived in sunny So. Cal. USA for nearly 30 years. Don't let that fool you. He's as bloke as they come, and a MAJOR trainspotter, to boot. So if you want to talk choo-choo's, he's your man! Jan B.-- or Baz, if you want to talk to the bug guy!
