As said in the Expohal recordings (see www.forevernow.com - great site Carl) - he was playing in Holland at extreme volumes, as the crowd was so up - he then managed to split the callous on his thumb. The gaffa tape is there to protect him from this, and to give a hard surface that can replicate the thumb callous. He also states that the sound without tape is better - although as stated the other day, there are some subtle differences in balance and weight that occur due to the tape. Having used the tape for years, I can confirm that it is possible to play L42 stuff just as well without it - and I think that many players have got away without it also - but if you have been such an active musician as Mark, the risks of blistering is much higher and therefore it is a sound idea to protect your fingers wherever possible. Fingerstyle bassplayers often suffer from blistering, and as yet, I don't know a way around this apart from practice, practice and practice - it's only through use, that you get good calluses. I also grow my nails to around 2mm and play from the tips, thus creating an almost 'pick' like sound - Mark must have extremely well developed picking to enable him to do long arduous tours! Last but not least, sorry for not updating http://come.to/jaydee-guitars - but I don't have a PC at the moment. However, I am working on some new stuff to go in there so, I will get it all updated very soon! - Keep visiting and feel free to make any suggestions! Probably because he, as a lot of other people, are having problems knowing which of the country he is in! :) /Frans ------------------------------ Subject: Tim Vincent From: "" Date: Tue, 25 May 1999 05:07:11 PDT I remember reading a small interview with tim vincent about a year ago in one of those trashy supermarket magazines, there was only about 7 0r 8 questions and one of them was his fave music. he said that he had been quite influenced musically by level 42 whilst he was growing up. does anyone know of any other famous level 42 fans.?..i think lenny henry might be one..... tcoy dean. ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Subject: Easy ? From: DonZipf @ aol.com Date: Tue, 25 May 1999 13:13:09 EDT ATTENTION!!! Thanks to a great tip from Winston, I have discovered something new for us die-hards to collect. It's doubly cool for me, since I am a collector of Hard Rock Cafe pins. Hard Rock Cafe guitar pins are among the most collected items in the world, especially the ones made to honor specific musicians (like Buddy Holly, Eddie Cochran, Jimi Hendrix, etc.). Now, it appears that HRC has issued a pin in honor of Mark King! It doesn't have his name on it (as none of them do, for legal reasons), but the pin is a pearl-blue/green JayDee 4-string Supernatural. I never saw another famous bassist playing one of those, and I'm told that the pin is referred to in-store as the Mark King pin, so I'm convinced. Apparently, the pins are only available in Pacific-region HRC's. I'm making efforts to obtain pins from Kowloon and the Philipines. So, if any of you know anyone who's going to Asia soon, ask him/her to bring back a fistful of Mark King pins! I'll try to put up a photo of the pin today at http://members.aol.com/donzipf/hrcpins.html Peace - Z. ------------------------------ Subject: BTW... Scientists conclude the universe is expanding at rate of 70 kilometers per second per megaparsec. With this figure the age of the universe is calculated to be 12 billion years. I thought this was pretty cool information given that scientists haven't been able to determine this with a good level of confidence. Had either of these numbers been 42, digest reaction would be interesting. Do I have too much time on my hands? See what a few days away from work does to ya!
