Speaking a bit of German, I can tell them apart, but I have been in situations where people I was with thought that others were speaking German when they were in fact speaking Dutch. I took a Lufthansa plane to Amsterdam once [the final destination was somewhere in Germany] and it was the first time I had ever heard Dutch and German spoken simultaneously. There are a number of differences [double vowels and that 'ach' sound that sounds like you are trying to hack up a lung (no offense)] but for the most part they do sound alike. It seems to me that the Dutch understand German, but the Germans don't understand Dutch. Is that somewhat correct? From: "Charl Mocke" Date: Mon, 24 May 1999 14:36:54 +0200 Hi friends! > Killer tunes, videos, and live music will be available to all! This is going to kick ass!!! Yes it will! I myself am going to be there as well! The first South African to attend a LevelFest! We are going to perform LIVE Level 42 music, including some (all?) Level 42 MIDI files Sean, myself and others have written so far. We are also proposing to make a CD project and record the stuff we will perform. Other than that, I'm sure it will be a freakin' great weekend, everyone who can make it to Texas in September must please come. You won't be sorry!!!! Many thanks to Sean Green and Mike Payne who will be hosting the event. And on the subject of MIDI, my computer is about to be fixed (Chernobyl!) and then I'm full steam into MIDI writing again. Ya'all can look forward to some new Level 42 MIDI files, including TCW, SAY, and many many more! Want to see them performed live by me & the others? Then see you at the TEXAS LEVELROUNDUP '99 on 17-19 September 1999 !!!!!!! Never mind what Nostradamus says about September!! :-) For more info about the MIDI files, contact me MockeC @ Telkom.co.za or Sean Green sdgreen @ flash.net . For info about hotel reservations, bookings, accomodation, etc. in Dallas / FW, contact Sean Green. Those who plan on coming: remember to book plane tickets early!!! ... And, on a completely different topic: Re: Thumb tape I definately find it much easier to play with a copper ring than bare thumb. I get a better sound, its easier on my thumb, and it feels I hit the string easier because of the momentum. It also seems I can hit the correct string easier than without a copper ring. Mine is about 2 cm long, with a slighty bigger radius on the one end so that it fits better onto my thumb. Thats it from me for now, Charl .... .. Mr. Charl Mocke ISIS Information Systems (Pty.) Ltd. From: Violatiana @ aol.com Date: Mon, 24 May 1999 11:07:51 EDT Sunday, I had planed to leave at 12.00 after I got off work (early). I have a second job as a Golf Course Supervisor. I'm in at 5 am Sun and 7 on Sat. Well, we had weather from Hell. Thunderstorms, Fog, Wet, dripping wet rain in these burst that flooded out places. Yes, Golfers can be singularly obsessed people, they were out there playing! So I got held up a bit, and I didn't leave until 12:30 pm. Still I thought that should give me 3 hrs to make the 4 pm show. WRONG. It took 4 hours. Why? Because people in NY and CT are crazy. I had no joke 3 overturned tractor trailers, 19, 3 or more multi-car accidents, (No one was killed in any accident) and 6 spin outs including one on I-95 which almost took out my little Geo Metro. People were speeding, visibility was bad, they were hydra-planing (roods were flooded so the wheels didn't or couldn't make contact with the road). I was both annoyed and pissed and by the time I got to Mohegan Sun, Chilled, Wet and Hungry too. As I ran in they were leaving the stage. I was sooo disappointed. But a waitress sat me down anyway, told me the next show was at 7 pm, sent me to the ladies to fix myself up, and told me I could bring food back in with me and got me a nice Hot Toddy. So let me describe this place. I was there for their first ever concert which was 2 years ago with INXS. The place is Called the Wolf's Den. It is located SMACK in the middle of the Casino. Slot machines surround the entire enclosure, so all you hear is coins falling and the Ca-Ching of the bells, and coins dropping. It's so surreal. The Wolf Den is a semi-enclosed Teepee which has trees in groups of 3 poles used in 14 posts to support the teepee. Atop each of these 14 posts is a carved or plastic carved Wolf in various poses howling at the sky. There are skins with various motifs and pictures covering the upper side of the teepee. It's more like a hut with a top (roof), a circular bottom and leaving an open window space to serve as a window. It's a circular 2 tier club. Three steps separate the floor from the outer tier of booths and seats and the main bar. On the floor there were booths and tables ranging from 2-6 people. Each Table had a candle and a bio on the band, and the CD Jazz not Jazz. The stage was a wolfs den with a rocky background (Like Red Rocks) a huge monitor overhead, and 2 semi spiral staircases to the rt. and left of the Stage. Pat stood center stage with Greg at the Piano to Pats Right (my left) I sat just off left center. The Drummer for the evening was Ian Thomas (drummer for Tom Jones), Laurence Cottle on Bass, and Tommy Smith on Saxophone. The younger Kane came over and introduced himself to me. Sold me the Jazz not Jazz CD which at $15 was very reasonable. The also had T-shirts for $15 and the cassette for $10. (John O'Connell Pat says hello, he remembers the Clacton Gig (I showed him your e-mail to me) and spoke with me for about 10 minutes and signed my CD. I also spoke to Tommy Smith first and asked him for the set list. He didn't have one but he left and sent Laurence out with the set list written on back on the Folder the Mohegan sun Management gave them with the rules and Reg. to Their Wolf Den Performance. One thing it says is that they must perform "On the hour of schedule" and no alcohol that is provided backstage is to be brought on stage. It's interesting reading! I spoke a little about the gig, his bass and complimented him on his playing. We spoke for about 5 minutes, he shook my hand and left. Pat came out a few minutes later, in glasses, beer in Hand (Beck's I think) and kissed me hello. He then gave me His set list with a few changes. He asked me if I'd been here before and if I liked to gamble, I told him yes and no. We talked about the gig, (strange set up), Their upcoming gig at Trump Marina in NJ in Oct/Nov, his writing, music, Greg, The Record Label, problems with Virgin and Virgin-America, their US management, the weather and the new CD. The Performance. Excellent! Pat was enjoying himself, and I've never seen Greg look so relaxed. The set went as follows: () are Pat Changes 4 pm 7 pm Virus of Love (Picture U) I Didn't Know Next Move Finally Making Whoopee Once in a Lifetime Remember Me -Laurence wrote Dismember me She Moves Thru Sonny Cried Sign O' the Times (yes the Prince song) (I didn't Know) Woman-in time Stars Crash Down - my fav Free Like Labour of Love I took notes on the set except for She moves, Sign, Stars, and Labour everything was new to me from the second set. I likes Finally Pat was in excellent voice. I liked the Sax Solo on I didn't know. Different arrangement on She moves I like it. Pat commented before Sign "this is the Prince Song done Charlie Parker Style." Very soulful powerful rendition of Stars Crash Down, and hyper-speeded up Labour of Love and man can that drummer play!!! It took 2 1/2 hours to get home and I have the new CD which I played in the car all the way home very loudly. (I left at 9.30 and thanks guys for taking the time to come and chat), Pat did tell me to find them when they play here again, I can't wait! Greg maybe next time. For this you get reduced admission to a majority of acts (wed-sat) and free admision (again for a majority of acts) on mondays and tuesday. So i "paids me money" and have just booked : 2 X mk tickets for the monday FREE 2 X mk tickets for the tuesday FREE 1 X mk ticket for the saturday for the reduced rate of £11.50 (rather than £19.50) just for good measure i also booked paul young (acoustic) FREE altogether therefore i have got (£19.50 X 6) + £8.00 (can't be bothered to work it out - you do the maths!!!) worth of tickets for just £55 so if theres anyone out there who was thinking of going to see mark in november (epecially if theres two of you) you could save a fortune by obtaining membership - and who knows who will also play at rs in the next year. (mention my name when you book - u never know i might get a free beer out of it!!) if anyone is going - especially on the saturday - will they let me know. You can book tables for a pre/during/post show dinner - and it would be kind of cool (got to stop using that word) to have dinner with digest folks on the night.
