From: The Saint Date: Thu, 20 May 1999 06:57:24 -0400 Well, there is a new Chinese Way on the market, but it's not something you listen to. It's a new line of asian influenced herbal suppliments called, what else? "The Chinese Way". They are available at GNC and other nutrition stores. Can anyone recommend any albums which shows off Jaco Pastorius & Marcus > Miller at their bass playing best ? Jaco's first CD, which is just named Jaco Pastorius, is great and has all sorts of famous sidemen [Herbie Hancock, the Brecker Brothers, David Sanborn, Sam & Dave, etc.]. I would also check out some of the Weather Report stuff as well. As far as Marcus, I would say his best solo work can be found on The Sun Don't Lie - the other instrumentation isn't as good as it is on other CDs, but his bass playing is virtuoustic [he SLAPS through Teen Town, for goodness sake]. > No, this isn't a question about Mike Lindup's "Lovely Day." Can anyone recommend any albums which shows off Jaco Pastorius & Marcus Miller at their bass playing best ? Well Brian, first check out Jaco's album called "Invitation", (Warner Bros 7599-23876-2)This album illustrates Jaco's knowledge very well !! Then, buy yourself "Marcus Miller, Live and More" (Dreyfus Jazz FDM36585-2)this album is one of the finest albums concerning bassplaying. (Lolita can tell you more about Mm, I'll bet ) after hearing these records, try also; Brian Bromberg, John Pattitucci and a Dutch guy called Edwin van Huyck (I dont know if he has made a record but I've seen this guy live years ago and really showed off --he also has an Alembic signature bass !) AND listen very , I mean very good to our man MK, specially songs like IWEyes, Dune tune,LML and so on !! From: "Mark Walsham" Date: Thu, 20 May 1999 13:29:30 GMT I am offically annoyed and p*** off! I sent a very polite email enquiry to our friends (fiends?) at Polydor UK about three weeks ago. Subject of which were the re-mastering of the L42 back catalogue. Two weeks later, still no response, So I sent another, and I am still waiting to date... If these companies are not prepared to answer emails, then they should not publish an email address.... This sucks !! LOZ --- Thirsting for rareties???? This CD is/was on auction on EBAY.COM, and they wanted $30 dollars for it! Question for the two Lisa's - Did either of you go to college in East London? A friend of mine used to go to college there, and talked of a L42 mad friend called Lisa, and I think he went to the Town And Country club gig with her and met MK afterwards. Ring any bells? Can anyone confirm whether the original cover for SITL was actually produced as a final draft product, I saw a scan of it a few weeks back, and it's very good. How about the eponymous debut solo album Epic records 1976? Avoid much of Jaco's later live stuff - sound quality dire! But 'Jaco Pastorius' the album is superb; it includes the superfunky "Come On, Come Over" and the incredible harmonic solo fest that is "Portrait of Tracy". Any other recommendations anyone? It will be interesting to see if this project actually materialises (if y'know what I mean, Dirkies). But if it does work out, as Mike Myers (brother of Peter Myers, who works with my sister - shameless name dropping!) would say: "Yeah, baybee, yeah". Winston: Because of your great assistance with the Mark King Live video, I have chosen to overlook the fact that you stated that you _like_ Regis & Kathy Lee. No one has performed more erroneous interviews of musicians than those two. If Mark King were on their show, Regis would make the following statements: "Now, you originally come from the Isle of Mann...", "You are widely regarded as a top-rate keyboardist...", "How are you coping after the break-up of Level 24?". And this would all be in the same interview!! Bilal: Yeah, Marie Osmond doesn't look too bad these days, but I believe she is currently carrying child number 7. Yeah, there's a good Level-related trivia question. Name the number of children Donny and Marie will produce between the two of them? 42!!! Though Donny has a way to go,as he currently only has one wife :-). (No offence intended to any followers of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints). Actually, Donny was quite good in "Joseph and the Technocolour Dreamcoat" (like the ones worn by the lads on the back of World Machine). Don't get me wrong though, even the "King" himself has dropped jaws using almost every bass under the sun. I think that all the level 42 digesters should form a JayDee user collective. I do not own one of Mark King's basses, ( however, i'll take his pearl blue Jaydee please... ) but I do have a cherrywood MK model (1988) that does the job. I hope to collaborate with some of the web's Level 42 sites to display the collective on-line. Obviously Morgan's Starchild bass will hopefully front the collective as it is the most prized JayDee in my opinion.
