LOZ ------------------------------ Subject: Lennon on the digest From: brianm @ actuaries.org.uk Date: Thu, 14 Jan 1999 11:54:41 +0000 Hello Digesters It was interesting to see John Lennon's name mentioned in todays digest. Level 42 will always be THE band for me, as [mentioned by others], I have grown up with their music. But, The Beatles, and in particular Lennon, are big heros of mine also. I have never been able to properly explain how I can admire two VERY different groups of musicians, but perhaps it is down to a certain admiration for being able to continually come up with new ideas/sounds etc. One Man is different from what we might have expected from Mark, but this is why we should admire him.....for not taking the easy route. We have all heard the slappy-ping-thud bass before, and great as it still is, it was brave and I feel correct for Mark to explore another avenue. The same e-mail mentioned the group "Chicago".......surely the worst group ever.....and in the same dull mode as "Toto" "REO Speedwagon" etc... Also, anyone know of a decent hotel in Hemel Hempstead area, preferably within staggering distance of the venue for the gig on 26 Jan ? Sorry...one more thing....is anyone mad/dedicated/rich enough to be going to ALL the forthcoming gigs in the UK. It would be interesting to know. Good luck though, it may now only be available as a 20-bit mastered Japanese import. Also, the Paul Young reference is spot-on. I'm so pleased that Changing the Guard is going to be the next single. It's my favourite song on the album and I just can't stop singing it. Has anyone heard any news about this release? I'm just wondering if there's any chance of a live or previously unreleased MK track to make this single even more irresistible. CD singles are limited to 20 minutes and 3 tracks these days so I hope Eagle have something special planned. Has anyone heard if the tickets are selling well for the UK gigs? Virgin Radio seem to be playing quite a few of the L42 favourites at the moment which will hopefully jog a few peoples memories and persuade them to go to the gigs. With any luck Virgin (and hopefully some BBC stations!) will also play "Changing the Guard" as soon as the promo singles are sent to radio. I've just checked out the MK photos on the MK website and they're really cool. I wonder if Mark will be wearing his silver sparkling jacket for the UK gigs! I applaud his knowledge and loyalty to Level 42. For many fans, change is good. Many of us are indeed fans of Level 42 because they produced such quality, divergent songs as Dune Tune and Leaving Me Now (I'm sure that there are better examples). However, I do get a bit miffed when people defend their arguments by then citing erroneous information. Now, I'm not a huge Chicago or Brian (sic) Adams fan (in Canada, we spell it "Bryan" - OK, I'm being pedantic), but neither has been the "same" since the beginning. Take a listen to early Chicago for some pretty funky horns and decent bass played by Mr Cetera himself. Bryan Adams was actually a fairly decent pop rocker in his early days (I still think "Run To You" isn't half bad). Both of these artists hit it big with some sappy ballads, and then to emulate that success, sang more sappy ballads. The result: mega sales and wealth, if not overwhelming critical acclaim. Level 42 tried the same thing after "Something After You" and "Lessons In Love". The result was the somewhat "forced" sound of Staring At The Sun and Guaranteed, and the largely ignored (half decent) "Forever Now". Success can be fleeting, and _every_ group with a sliver of success has tried to tailor their sound for wider appeal. And every group's fans debate the "early" vs "late" period issue. Classic understatement from JohnRGab: "I was never a John Lennon fan, but I will always respect what his work meant to others, for he, like the members of Level 42 are, was extremely talented and gifted." Now I know we're all big fans of this little group from the Isle of Wight, but even I wouldn't put Boon (or Mark for that matter) in the same sentence with John Lennon (or Stevie Wonder, Sting, David Bowie, Bob Marley or potentially hundreds of other music "legends"). This is sort of like those lists in Q detailing the greatest albums of "all time" with Radiohead ("decent" band) having two albums in the top ten. Context and loyalty are very important concepts. Mark King, at 40, is going (on record) for the "adult contemporary" lounge-lizard sound, simply because it's his best bet for success. A largely-unknown 40 year old with a bass-happy funky sound is not likely to sell oodles of CD's in today's market. But I applaud those on this Digest who have been honest enough to view their displeasure with this "softer" sound. Assailing the King is not often tolerated in these parts. I don't mind the sound myself, though I don't expect to actually purchase the album until I can get it a lot cheaper (unlike my obviously very wealthy compatriot, Alex). Off-topic note to Canadians: try to catch the British cartoon "Bob And Margaret" on Global. The last episode had Bob's cousin and his wife from Toronto visiting England. And all they did was complain about the price of everything, the lack of TV channels, lack of multiple bathrooms, lack of hot water, etc. Very realistic. I don't think many British Digest members would want North Americans staying with them. We're born whiners (whingers for those in England). Sorry for the long ramble. It's hard to beat a good live string sound, except a half decent bass solo maybe ?!! Before the purists start flinging mud, I think the classical element was slowly creeping into the band's repertoire, (not surprising you may say, as some of them were RCM trained.) and was particularly graphic in Forever Now with Romance and LIAPW. If the band had made one more album, I wonder if more classical orchestration would have come in under the stewardship of Mr Lindup. Perhaps Mike Lindup's forthcoming classical album is the next step on from this. I for one would've loved to have heard It's Over remixed as a semi classical track, in fact most of the L42 ballards could, I feel, have had the same treatment and sounded deeper and more moody as a result. Anyway, just a thought....... I can't afford this. > > You're preachin' to the choir, brother - Don Z. You've got a witness here, Amen! What usually seems to happen is I think, "hey, I'll buy this neat new bass, and sell this other old one to make up for it!" Which, of course, never happens. Either I can't bear to part with it, or I just can't seem to sell it (market fluctuates wildly here in sunny Delaware). For instance... right now I have a real beauty; a 5-string fretless Carvin (circa '93), Tung oiled maple and Koa wood neck-thru, with gold hardware & straplocks. I paid almost $1000 for it new, and I only really want $450 for it. Can I sell it? Apparently not. I have it on consignment, and people keep putting down deposits on it and then not coming round to get it. I have nothing substantive against Fender, just a general feeling of "rip-off" when I think about their ego-laden sales attitude during the 80's. "Oh yes, you will buy our stuff no matter what we charge, because everyone else has one!" They've changed a lot since then, and I don't blame Mark for gettin' them to hook him up. Their custom shop has always been brilliant, and I really do like the sound of their basses. I have yet to hear "One Man" but I'm sure it reflects the rich tone I would expect from Mark (and Fender). I think tone is more about the player than the axe, and I suspect Mark could make just about anything sound brilliant! nuff said. ------------------------------- Chris Staunton chriss @ delanet.com ...gotta get back to BASSics... ------------------------------- ------------------------------ Subject: Remixes CD and my two 'Euros' worth. Can I claim to be the first user of the 'Euro' currency on the Digest? Some digesters quote 'their two cents worth' well here is my two Euros worth on the Best Drum tacks. IMO, and choosing one each from Phil and Gary and both live, it would have to be Eyes Waterfalling and If You Were Mine. I believe that EW was a particular fav. of Phil's to perform live and, well, Gary had the chance to take centre stage with his own composition and took it well. I remember seeing IYWM performed for the first time at Hammersmith '90 and thought this guy is brave in helping divert from the Britfunk that we were so used to up until the mid '80's. I blame it on being in Australia, which is relatively L42 free, except for the 12" The Chant has begun/Almost There vinyl I bought the other day for $5. I have a few questions. Q. In Kouyate, from True Colours, there is a spoken word peice in the middle 8, starting with, "...we took the village by surprise...". Is this Mike Lindup's voice? Its been bugging me for years. Q. How did the re-release of "Living it Up feat. Omar" do on the UK charts? Any ideas on how to get a copy? L42 stuff isn't on the shelves here anymore. Q. Lastly, I'm after a general feeling about how L42 fans rate "The Pursuit of Accidents" album. When I first listened to it I was really disappointed, but recently (8 yrs after my first listen) I have been getting right into it. I don't believe music has to be fashionable but I think this album would be pretty popular in Australia right now with the right marketing and image. I LOVE The Kick or the Kiss. The beat is great (I sound like someone on American Bandstand), and the backup vocals are slammin'. This song reminds me of a Donald Fagan song in a way. Donald isn't the greatest singer (no flames please - I love him to death!), but the songs themselves are always slammin', and the three soulful backup singers add the cayenne pepper they need. Prime examples of this phenomenon are Babylon Sisters and Countermoon, especially the very end of both songs. This is what makes The Kick or the Kiss such a great tune, IMO. Lolita P.S.
