From: dirk.vael @ lu.arthurandersen.com Date: Wed, 19 May 1999 11:22:49 +0100 Yo Levelheads since I had to dub the White Funky for a friend in Switzerland, I decided yesterday to remaster the original italian tape-to-cd-(to-md!) bootleg from 1983 onto CDR. What could I do to revive this narrow sounding but superb gig? **tech blarb ON, you can skip if you want** First of all I only had a CD dub on Minidisc, recorded in ATRAC 4.5 24bit optical digital (sold the original CD already), so that should make most anti-MD whiners VERY quiet regarding doubts about lost sound quality ;-) Then I fed the signal through a DSP to make it more concert sounding alike (plus a bit sharper and more bass), and connected that surround signal to my Amiga soundcard aux1. Simultaneously, I also fed the original unmodified signal directly to my soundcard in another input aux2 which can be digitally mixed with the first input (but the 2nd input at half of the record level as 1st). This brought the voices back to the forefront, which normally sound a bit hollow due to the hall effect which is typical for DSP 'Concert Hall' settings. This created a warm full sound unlike the original flat empty one. Then i recorded the two channels simultaneously digitally mixed on my computer (never tried that with a crappy peecee soundblaster, not planning to do it neither ;-). result: it sounds almost like "A Physical Presence" !! (despite to sometimes fluffy sound due to the original tape recording) I'm not planning to do noiseprint processing to reduce the additional background noise which was already on the original CD but is now amplified due to the surround tricks. I recorded it very dynamically to suppress background noise as much as possible (you don't really hear the noise actually), and since there aren't many quiet parts in the gig (:-), it's better to leave it like that. If you compare the original bootleg with this remaster, you might wonder why you ever liked the original ;-) **tech blarb OFF, you can read on** Gee, is this a great gig! I'll probably add the 7:12 mins Mr. Pink 'overdub' remix (made by a famous US digester ;-) at the end of the disc since the gig itself is only 67:05 minutes. (might not fit on a TDK CDR, needed for 8x burning). Otherwise the great India's "Pink Rhythm" (it stays Pink!, with MK on bass, great L42-sounding 1982(3?4?) tune) might get a chance. (still got the 12", Maarten!) Once this disc is ready we'll discuss the legality of this CDR (is remastering a bootleg and selling it for $3 illegal?), then anyone can buy it (prefer to swap with some demos and unreleased tracks though, much less than the high prices asked for the original bootleg CD which has the most horrible amateuristic artwork ever seen! comments please! I was just curious..how come Level never played Two Solitudes live?? Is it because it was such a complicated song on the accoustic? cuz it really is..this song shows just how talented Boon really is..and I have extreme respect for this guy and he is greatly missed. and thanks to Phil for writing such a beautiful song.. If you check the archives, Eric recently posted a listing of users by country. There were more than 20 people with ".uk" at the end of their e-mail address. In addition, some of the folks who are ".com" are possibly from the UK as well. Finally, by attending both the Britfest last November and the London Mark King gig, I met at least 30 people from the UK who are actually subscribed to the digest - I think the number is really over 100. Hopefully this will clear things up a bit. Could Don Z. elaborate on the fact that the magazine used the Wolverhampton photo of Mark that he had taken? Also best wishes to all NY Levelfest attendees. Too many weddings on May 29. I am trying to get together a collage of pictures of Mark King. I have tried down loading pictures from some of the web sites, but a technical friend of mine says that these do not reproduce very well.......I have sent a disk to a reproduction house, and they have confirmed this. Would any kind, lovely, beautiful digest person be able to offer me any advice, or perhaps email me with a view to me borrowing a set of negatives ? Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated. 2. Can anyone recommend any albums which shows off Jaco Pastorius & Marcus Miller at their bass playing best ? Thanks for all you help....roll on November. How are you all? It's great to be able to "look out" over the digest and "see" the rainbow of races (and personalities) that make the digest so unique and an all around fun place to be a part of. Just wanted to mention to anyone that might be interested that Lenny White has a new CD out on Hip Bop records entitled "Edge". It contains a very talented assemblage of musicians and it's definitely a very funky and jazzy session....and a great addition to any music (and Level 42) lover's cd collection! For any of the digesters that don't know about Lenny, he is an extremely gifted drummer, considered by many as one of the pioneers of the jazz fusion movement. In addition to his solo and sideman credits, Lenny's highest visibility to date is undoubtedly his recordings as a member of Chick Corea's ground breaking group Return To Forever. As many of you digesters know, Mark King (in the pre Level 42 days) was so impressed with Lenny's musicianship and artistry that he made the journey all the way from the UK to the US, and showed up on Lenny's doorstep to crash at Lenny's crib (I kid you not...this is a documented and true story)! Looking forward to seeing many of you at the NYC Levelfest next week. As always, keep it real....and keep it funky! "Funky T", a.k.a. You see, Alan Murphy (I think while he was with L42) played guitar on Donny's "Soldier of Love" album. shuf ------------------------------ Subject: Loz, D&M, etc. From: Winman42 @ aol.com Date: Wed, 19 May 1999 12:53:06 EDT Ok, Loz, dud you pilfer that pic of the Mark King raritie from the www.ebay,com website?
