Judi Z ------------------------------ Subject: One Man Critics From: JohnRGab @ aol.com Date: Wed, 13 Jan 1999 20:04:51 EST Level 42's band members have been recording their own music for almost 20 years. Think about it. If you were a big fan in 1980 with the hit singles Flying On The Wings of Love, Love Meeting Love and Sandstorm, you must have been severely disappointed when Standing In The Light was released. Instead of plugging in a formula, Mark, Mike, Phil and Boon got creative. Now compare Standing In Light to Running In The Family. Do they sound the same? Do they take you to the same place? Not me. Those darn guys went and got creative again. OK, say Running In The Family is their quintessential sound, then how could they go off and switch gears again with Forever Now? Bet you didn't like that either. And now, One Man? What's next? All this being creative must be giving you a migraine. I have a solution. There is a group, Chicago, manned primarily by Peter Cetera, who hasn't changed their formula much since they started up. Go buy their albums, they all sound the same. Or maybe try Brian Adams. To be honest, I like One Man. A lot. It is a rich, yet simple sound which I think shows a maturity about Mark. We all grow and change. I think we should extend that understanding any one of the band members who want it. If you don't like the sound of One Man, at least understand it is a very good album. I was never a John Lennon fan, but I will always respect what his work meant to others, for he, like the members of Level 42 are, was extremely talented and gifted. Be intellectually honest for a change. John. ------------------------------ Subject: 3 Drum Tracks, Mac WAVs From: BHConrad @ aol.com Date: Wed, 13 Jan 1999 22:21:53 EST from a drummer... 3 of my favorite L42 drum tracks are 'Children Say', 'If you were mine', and 'Silence'. Even though 2 of them are Gary's, I much prefer Phil's laid-back, groove-oriented, simple-but-complex rhythms, with unique fills. Also, from what I've seen/heard of Gary Husband live with Level 42, I thought he was lousy - doing too many incredibly fast but uninteresting fills. Also, MacMen - how do you guys play WAV files on your Macintosh? (i.e. at 'home' or on the internet) private email will do. thank u muchly, adios. Bruce **** ** ------------------------------ Subject: Thermometers From: Brian Date: Wed, 13 Jan 1999 22:03:15 -0600 Personally I would stay away from Mercury thermometers. Mercury is very bad news. Most people don't realize just how bad it is. In fact, Mercury fillings cause a lot of problems too, but the ADA won't admit this. If you break a thermometer and the Mercury spills into the carpet, I doubt you can remove it all. Even on a hard floor, some might get in cracks that you can't get out. Of course the vapors are very toxic. Digital thermometers work fine, there is no reason not to use them. Hell who cares if they don't last 20 years? I believe most can afford spending $4 for a thermometer every 20 years. Of course for those with 96 tanks, that would get a little more expensive. My Acura thermometer is very easy to read, easier than a mercury one I used to have. I can get a pretty exact reading from it too. Just my $.02 Brian. ------------------------------ Subject: Don Z: Bass chat 3 From: RJBOKBOY @ aol.com Date: Wed, 13 Jan 1999 23:06:34 EST Don: I'm a novice player, who doesn't make time to practice. I own a 4 string Pedulla MVP Custom. I love the warm tone and playability of the intrument, but find it's a buggar to keep in tune. Any thoughts? I still can't resist the need to stop by most music stores and sample their stuff. I recently found the Lakland basses and was very impressed. They had just received their first intrument and were waiting on more. I'm still burning for a 5 string and really like the Musicman Stingray units a lot. For more of a mass produced instrument, the feel and sound are wonderful. I'd love to hear your thoughts on the MK Alembic. I havn't foung an Alembic I couldn't live without yet. I beg to disagree (hey and it's nothing like Running in the Family!). The basslines are still cool, you don't have to snap, hammer and thumb away at the fretboard to do make a good bass line! Okay, so it's a bit more mellow than the Level stuff if that's what you prefer, but there are some cracking songs on the One Man album with some interesting new sounds. Having said that, if you want to hear Mark thundering away at the bass at the speed of light until smoke comes out of the amps and all the LEDs pop on his fretboard, then I'm sure that we won't dissapoint his fans on the new tour. ;) - Richard PS.
