Calling all persons in the Leicestershire area! My band 'The Afflicted' (crap name I know) is going to be playing at the Greyhound in Hinckley this Friday. We are only doing a support slot this time, but if you fancy a 45 minute frenzy, then feel free to come along! We will be supporting 'Kane'. Some of you may remember me from the Britfest in Atherstone - it won't be boring I promise you! Hope to see you there! Is there a list somewhere of who's going? If so, please could someone mail me and let me know so I can add my name to it. This will be the first gig I've been to since joining the Digest, and it would be really good to meet up with some of you. TCOY Debbie ------------------------------ Subject: Children Say - what ? From: "Timothy Hill" Date: Thu, 06 May 1999 07:14:31 PDT Dear Levelheads, Can anyone tell me what the little "Children Say" logo on the back cover of the Forever Now album is? I have the tape, and I can only make out "The Children Say" with something like "Project" underneath. The "Children Say" part of it is in childish writing, with a back-to-front 'e', and a cartoon talk bubble above the 'e'. I have all the L42 albums from 'Early Tapes' to 'FN', all on vinyl and tape, and a few re-mixes - mostly scrounged from 2nd hand record stores. I'm also a Joe Jackson fan. Being an Australian I never got to see the boys live - anyone point me in the right direction to get some L42 videos ? The intro has been re-editied, removed the extra 8 beat turnarounds until well into the song plus special effects and stutter edits. The song is good, but not too radical. The other remixes on the CD are: Various Artists Medley, The Bangels "Walk Like An Egyptian", Heaven 17 "Let Me Go", Human League "Fascination", OMD "If You Leave", Front 242 "Head Hunter", Dead Or Alive "You Spin Me Round", File 13 "Taste So Good", Cyndi Lauper "She Bop" and Berlin "Sex". All the mixes are derived from earlier 80's mixes with new beats, edits and effects. For those maintaining the discographies, here is the catalog number: Title: The Edge Level 3 Label: Hot Tracks Country: USA (1999) Cat #: HT-CD-ED-3 Track #3: Level 42 "Something About You" I would refer to the mix as the "Hot Tracks Remix" since it has been reworked by them. I found a used copy of "The Pursuit of Accidents" at my local used CD shop here in Tampa. If anyone wants/needs it, e-mail me and I'll pick it up. Price tag is $4.00. It is missing the back cover, but at least this store always guarantees the quality of the CD. I'm psyched for the NYC Levelfest! All of you locals better be there. I know there's about 100 of you on Long Island alone ;-), so let's have a great turnout. How 'bout you, Eric? That's me today. Gallegos" Date: Thu, 6 May 1999 18:48:23 -0700 Regarding the hotel situation for the Memorial Day weekend gathering in New York......and if you are just wondering what this is all about - scroll to the bottom of this post. Alright gang. I have hit a bit of a brick wall. The hotel will not let me book more than 3 rooms under my Govt. ID. This, they inform me of today. So, I did some researching and found that Cheap Tickets.com has the rooms for 99.95 a night for Friday and Saturday, but there is a rate diff for Sunday - it jumps to $125. : ( And according to the Hilton themselves - there were quite a few rooms left....but I recommend you get your calls into them as soon as you can. If you go direct through the Hilton - it's $129 a night. In addition to my room, I have reserved 2 more rooms with 2 double beds. The ones that requested these were Laure Grandpierre (PLEASE confirm Laure) and Tony "Bouncin' Man" Bassette. I was unable to get rooms for: Don Zipf, Chuck Roehm, Dan James and Catherine Jones. I sincerely apologize for all this. Thank goodness I got this figured out now, instead of days prior to our departure. Cheap Tickets toll free 1-800-259-0962 http://www.cheaptickets.com/ Go to bottom of the screen, select Hotels. Choose New York, then go from there. It's the Hilton Gateway Hotel, Newark New Jersey. And for those of you who did not get the info...here it is again.... We are gathering in NY over Memorial Day weekend for some Level festivities. The majority of us are arriving in New Jersey on Friday, 28 May. We are gathering at the Hilton Gateway on 29 May from 9 - 2 am for some musical madness and fun. The rest of the time can be spent sight seeing and hanging out with some very cool folks. If you will be attending - please mail either Winston ( Winman42 @ aol.com ) Lolita ( ljacks1 @ ibm.net ) or myself. And then go to Tony's wonderful site http://www.cs.univ-paris8.fr/~kult/ILF/ ) and add your information to the list! I'm sorry again.....I tried! I think I wore out the l42 master series cd....."you cant blame louis" is an alltime favorite as well as ALL of level best....question.....how come "Lying still" didn't make the level best cd???? Alltime favorite song with the exception of the Shep Pettibone remix of "Something about you".....but I digress..... Where....oh where can I get a copy of the "One Man" cd??? It is nearly impossible to get here in the states so all of you living in the uk and beyond, I am EXTREMELY jealous...found a swedish? site that has mk playing "Bitter Moon" .....www.omroep.nl/avro/lalalalive/king......helps me get through the mornings......anyway, just thought I would let you know my thoughts for the moment... "The words flew in empty circles....reasons unexplained...." ------------------------------ Subject: Re MIKE LINDUP From: "Bill Leslie-Miller" Date: Fri, 7 May 1999 05:59:03 +0100 AN EVENING WITH MIKE LINDUP Needless to say I won't mention any of the tunes that were played last night, so as not to spoil it for anybody........... It was great to see Mike back last night, he looked well, seemed very happy, and despite the fact that he may be quite a shy guy, he seemed to come out of his shell last night. It was really a talk with Gavin Robertson to Mike about his favourite poetry (DH Lawrence, Wordsworth etc) and books and to talk a bit about his life with Level 42 and how it started....and for him to sing some songs old and new. He talked about his early life of getting into music and how Level 42 formed up, he spoke of how he always felt he was the 'levelling influence in the band' sometimes when Phil and Mark were let's say 'pulling in different directions'......It must be said that he did talk in a passing comment about 'girlfriends and ex-girlfiends' (Let's hope it now scotches all rumours !!!) He spoke about his Citroen 2CV racing, and there was a small chance for the audience to ask questions too....one of which was 'Are Level 42 reforming ???' Mike said that it had not been discussed, but if everybody decided they wanted to get back together again then he said 'never say never again'.......... Mike has written an insturmental album and a song album and doesn't have a deal at the moment, but he said that he is now his own man, doesn't have a manager and is doing it all himself......, oh yes and Mike's mum and stepdad were in the crowd, and he received a standing ovation at the end....... Can somebody else fill in the gaps I left ? Great to see him back........ Bill Miller ------------------------------ Subject: Mike Lindup Gig. From: "Mark Walsham" Date: Fri, 07 May 1999 07:30:57 GMT Blurry eyed this morning after getting home from the Mike Lindup gig at 2.30am, and I have to be up for work at 7am! Phoooarr, Mike was on excellent form, and the show was quite different to what I had thought it would be. Mike started with a couple of L42 songs (performed solo with Piano), then had a chat about his background with the host Gavin Robertson, which was very interesting to hear. Mike talked about how he met Phil and Mark and the things he liked to do as a child. Mike had picked around 5 pieces of poetry/extracts from books, books which had inspired him over the years, and throught the show he read some of these. Despite sounding uncool, this was very cool. About five minutes from the interval, we were all rudely awoken with a fire alarm, and as everyone was jostling and trying to leave, Mike and Gavin just sat on stage quite peacefully. Anyway, Mike did a song from Changes and we had a break. From a guess I would say there was about 200-210 people there. Mike came back on, and talked about this new projects, the Piano album and a song album, and we were treated to two tracks from the Piano album! (These are very cool). More readings, and a song from his song album (you have got to hear this song, it's a peach) and a couple more songs to finish off! I was lucky enough to be able to go back stage with two laides whom had travelled all the way from the US to see they show, wow! Hello if you read this! And we chatted with Mike, and he also signed my copy of my Thunderthumbs 7" Single. Mike is such a nice chap, listens to what you say, and is very warm and friendly! Well Mike, if your reading this, thank you for letting me back stage, and the show was excellent. It has been too long and it was great to see you play again. Cant wait for the album(s) and following gigs!
