A: You only have to punch the information into the drum machine once. In addition to that, two more funnies: Q: How do you know when a drummer is knocking at your door? A: The knock always slows down. Q: How do you get a drummer to play an accelerando? A: Ask him to play in 4/4 at a steady 120 bpm. And there's more where this came from... Whether it was new, or maybe "Sleepwalkers". Anyone got any thought? I hope so. Wooooahhh. ALthough I know now, I have to say that I thought this whole incident was about some record shop somewhere and not actually Resurgence itself - Duh -as far as I'm concerned I could forgive anyone who put out Tin Man for just about anything. I think though that Boon came close to getting a deal for Tin Man when he over in America a few years ago, I think that was with quite a large label. I for one have always advocated Resurgence (check out Word Machine issues 1 and 3 for adverts for all the Level 42 related stuff they do.) Well here we come for what could be one of the greatest weeks in living memory - Brighton here I come. LOZ ------------------------------ Subject: Hello! I'm New In Town From: "john.lynda" Date: Wed, 05 May 99 21:30:07 PDT Hello people, It's a pleasure to make your acquaintance. I'm new to the digest so for starters here goes... My background: I'm an Electronic Engineer working in Milton Keynes (UK) and living in Luton. My first memories of listening to Level 42 are quite hazy, but I think I was about 12 (1984). My favourite song at the time was Microkid. At the time I wasn't consciously listening to the bass but there was definitely something about the music that grabbed my attention. My dad is a drummer so I had a feel for rhythm and I was more interested in drums than bass at the time. As I searched out earlier albums then so my appreciation for the band and the bass escalated and I could definitely feel an urge to get acquainted with a bass. I went to University where I met a chap on the course who played bass. Here was my opportunity. So a cheap bass was purchased (£125 Starforce bass) and so the source of all my frustrations can be traced to two events. Listening to Microkid and meeting a bass player at University. Interestingly enough, I've more recently rekindled a desire to play drums and have had the opportunity to have a go on the Roland V-drums. Any drummers out their who haven't had the chance should make it a priority. If you do get to try them don't blame me for the hole made in your pocket or any divorces that ensue. Back to the main issue L42: Favourite track: "Dune Tune" (Reminiscent of Jamaican Boy (Stanley Clarke) what do you think ?) Favourite riff: Too many to list Favourite line: "I want your tears to bear my reflection" Favourite sung Slap part: "Beeeeeee Bossa Beyng Bong, Bong Bong Bong a diggy diggy beeyuuuw wowww" Now what was all that about ? I'm sure someone on the digest will have a story about how that line came about. My guess is that the conversation went something like this. .........# We're too far apart two strangers we've become........# Mark: "Any suggestions on the break here lads ? Mike, Boon or Phil: "Hey Mark! How about a bit of a slap part like this......." And the rest is history. Just a couple of other points before I go, if anyone is still reading. I think Boon is Pukka (That's for the chap who likes learning all the English slang words) I would love to get my hands on some of the Bootlegs that have been discussed recently (The White funky etc.) I have in my meagre collection a video of a gig in the Town and Country (Guaranteed Tour). I also have the English version of 'Guitarist' which has some TAB in for 'The Essential', 'Children Say' 'Love Games', 'Last Chance'. The interesting part here is not the TAB but the "actual" notes that go with the transcriptions. I've seen the translation of this on a web page and it's quite amusing to compare to the real thing. Perhaps I'll post the amusing bits next time. See you for now John W ------------------------------ Subject: Good funk is where U find it! From: Paul Theriault Date: Wed, 5 May 1999 15:18:45 -0700 (PDT) Good Day fellow funksters. Bassjones here saying that all good things bass come to those who wait. The word is that Mark King's next solo release will be more bass guitar oriented, that being said I guess I'll have to wait again before I can start my own chapter in Level style funk.Peace! This is unheard off here, all they ever play >is SAY, LIL, TSGD. What is going on, I thought I was dreaming. Actually, I've heard some of the earlier Lev stuff on the wireless in the last few years, namely Love Games on Kiss 100 (London), Weave Your Spell on Heart 106.2 (London), Love Meeting Love and Wings of Love on Active 107.5 (East London based station) and Hot Water on Capital FM 95.8 (London) to recall a few. I must admit though, it has knocked me for six each time, 'cos it's a RARE occurrence to hear any Lev stuff on the tranny these days !!! Also Mark asked a non 42 question Talking of spooky, >Last night me, my wife and some friends of ours watched, Three Men and A Baby, on video (yeah I know it's >sad), but have any of you guys seen a spooky moment on the middle of the film where there is a ghost in it? >Aparently, where they filmed it, in an apartment, a young boy accidently killed himself with his fathers shot >gun. Anyway, in the film, in one scene you see the shot gun, and in the second you see a young boy in the >background. It's really spooky when you watch it as if you didn't look for it, you may have never have noticed >it. > >A ghost or a stunt by the movie people? Neither as far as I'm aware ! I remember an artice in the newspaper a few years ago about it, and the ghostly figure turns out to be a cardboard cut out of someone (whose name escapes me) that was caught in shot during filming. The kid getting shot story is, I think, just a load of bollocks, (in relation to the scene that is) !! It's the first I've heard of that story, but I feel it's one of the billions of movie myths that spring-up all the time around unusual events. I could be wrong though (but not about the cardboard cut out !!) S'later, D. ===================================================================== Dave Kidd - Ilford, Essex, England. I've tried both ways, but I cannot get a good sound when I try slapping a G string (Ooo-err). That's All -T
